Chapter 46: Too Close for Comfort
Oof.
Rong Zhenqiao felt like an arrow had shot straight through his heart.
Wasn’t Rong Xingyu the one who had never even stepped into a kitchen before? How did he suddenly learn how to cook?
"Don’t you have a housekeeper at home?" Rong Zhenqiao frowned. "He already has a full day of classes, why should he cook by himself after that?"
"I told him the same thing, but Xiaoyu wouldn’t listen. He said he likes doing it himself. Hah, maybe that’s just how much love he has for his fourth brother~"
Rong Zhenqiao sighed tiredly and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Enough with the nonsense."
"Oh, and he’s been practicing for some kind of play recently. He said he’s going to perform during the school anniversary celebration. But when I asked what play it was, he refused to tell me anything. He wouldn’t even let me come and cheer for him."
"School anniversary?"
Rong Zhenqiao thought for a moment. He seemed to recall receiving an invitation from Qibao Dwith School for that very event.
As an important shareholder and honored alumnus, of course, he would have to attend the celebration.
"Tch, I’m an honored alumnus too," Rong Zishan said with a smirk. "I’ll go cheer for my Xiaoyu as well."
Rong Zhenqiao’s forehead vein twitched, he’d already been teased more than once today. "If you can’t say anything decent, just shut up. Do you still want your allowance or not?"
"..." Rong Zishan fell silent.
After all these years, this was still his brother’s one and only weapon. But fine, he didn’t actually need the money. The prize money from his racing wins was more than enough.
Still, he was smart enough to keep quiet. His brother’s "allowance" was always a lot.
Rong Zishan suddenly snapping his finger as if he remembered something. "Oh, and Xiaoyu’s been preparing for some kind of competition lately. Weird, right? Since when did that slacker start caring about contests?"
Rong Zhenqiao who had been about to mention that Rong Xingyu actually ranked first in his last monthly exam coughed lightly and changed the subject. "Ahem... is Xiaoyu home right now?"
"Yeah, probably just—"
Before he could finish, the other end went click.
Hung up.
"..." Rong Zishan stared at his phone in disbelief. "He totally did that on purpose!"
Rong Xingyu was probably just getting home now. Around this time, he was usually in the kitchen cooking.
If Rong Zhenqiao wasn’t home tonight... that meant Rong Xingyu would have to eat alone.
Rong Zishan rubbed his chin and muttered to himself, "Maybe I should just go back home too."
"Achoo!"
Just then, Rong Xingyu who had just stepped outside suddenly sneezed.
October in the capital had already turned cold.
He sniffed lightly and pulled his jacket tighter around him.
At that moment, a car that had been parked near the curb for a while suddenly honked twice.
Rong Xingyu turned toward the sound.
As the car window slowly rolled down, a sharp handsome face came into view and it was Ding Yixin.
Seeing him, Rong Xingyu’s eyes lit up and he ran over excitedly.
"Dr. Ding!"
Ding Yixin had already gotten out of the car when Rong Xingyu started running over.
Now, he was leaning casually against the front of his car.
It was supposed to be just a simple movement but because Ding Yixin’s looks and aura were far too striking, even this casual moment made him look like he had just stepped out of a magazine photo.
Rong Xingyu stopped in front of him and his eyes shining brightly.
"Dr. Ding, have you been waiting long?" he asked.
Ding Yixin raised a hand and gently brushed Rong Xingyu’s wind tousled hair. A faint smile softened his eyes as he said quietly, "No, I just arrived."
Rong Xingyu tilted his head up and looking at him. He couldn’t help but smile too.
"Then let’s go," he said cheerfully.
Ding Yixin walked around to the other side and opened the passenger door for him.
Once Rong Xingyu had settled into the seat, Ding Yixin closed the door and went around to the driver’s side.
Rong Xingyu sat obediently in the passenger seat, his hands resting on his knees and his back perfectly straight like a student listening attentively in class.
Ding Yixin glanced at him and couldn’t help tapping his fingers lightly against the steering wheel, the sight was just too endearing.
Finally, he simply said in a calm voice, "Yuyu, your seatbelt."
"Oh, right! Okay!"
Rong Xingyu’s face turned slightly red. He lowered his head, reached for the seatbelt, and pulled it out.
But for some reason, the belt seemed to be deliberately going against him.
After he pulled it halfway, it suddenly jammed and the length wasn’t enough to reach the buckle on the other side.
Rong Xingyu blinked his eyes.
Was it... broken?
He had already been feeling oddly nervous ever since getting into the car and now he was tugging at the belt with all his strength to no avail.
No matter how hard he tried, it wouldn’t move an inch.
"Do you need some help?"
Before Rong Xingyu could even nod, Ding Yixin leaned over toward him.
"—!"
Rong Xingyu froze.
He was so close! He could practically feel the tip of Ding Yixin’s nose brushing past his ear.
Rong Xingyu instinctively held his breath, his eyes widening as Ding Yixin reached for the seatbelt in his hands.
Their fingers brushed together accidentally.
Rong Xingyu was startled and jerked his hand back as if he had been burned.
But the sudden reaction felt too exaggerated, maybe even rude which only made him sit even stiffer, his entire body tense.
They were so close that Rong Xingyu could feel the warmth of Ding Yixin’s breath near his cheek.
The doctor’s long and slender fingers gripped the seatbelt and with a sharp snap, it finally loosened and retracted properly.
For a brief moment, Ding Yixin’s arm was stretched across Rong Xingyu’s chest, almost like an embrace.
