Chapter 70: A Shift in Truth
Seeing his brother’s excited face, Rong Xingyu just smiled and swallowed back the truth that he had already eaten half a cake at the hotel earlier.
When Rong Xingyu smelled the sweet, fresh scent of mango, his appetite immediately stirred, his stomach almost growled in response.
Just then, Rong Zhihao suddenly said, "Wait, isn’t Xiaoyu allergic to mango? Why is the cake made of mango?"
Rong Xingyu blinked his eyes in confusion. Allergic to mango? Since when?
Rong Zishan raised his eyebrows, looking surprised, "What are you talking about? How could Xiaoyu be allergic to mango? Mango’s his favorite fruit! He used to eat them all the time when he was little."
Rong Zhenqiao nodded and added, "I picked a mango cake on purpose. It’s both of your favorite flavor."
Rong Zhihao froze.
That didn’t make sense. Lin Yutong had told him clearly that Rong Xingyu was allergic to mango and Lin Yutong wouldn’t dare lie to him.
But now, not only was Rong Xingyu not allergic, he actually liked mango?
...
Inside the car moving steadily through the night, Ding Wei kept sneaking glances at his uncle who was sitting beside him with his eyes closed, looking calm and distant.
The more Ding Wei thought about what happened earlier, the less sense it made.
From what he knew about his uncle, there was no way the man would just let someone embarrass him like that yet tonight, he’d quietly accepted it and left without a word.
"If you have something to say, just say it."
Ding Yixin’s voice was calm, but it carried the kind of quiet authority that made people straighten up.
Ding Wei scratched the back of his head, feeling hesitated, and then he finally blurted out the question that had been bothering him.
"Uncle, weren’t you just with Rong Xingyu? Why did you make me go and deliver something to him?"
Hearing that, Ding Yixin finally opened his eyes. His long fingers tapped lightly on his leg twice before he spoke.
Of course there was a reason, he wanted Ding Wei to go and call him "Uncle."
The man felt absolutely no guilty about using his own nephew as a convenient tool.
He cast a sidelong glance at Ding Wei and said lazily, "This is adult matters. Don’t stick your nose in it."
Ding Wei was speechless for a moment, then protested, "I’m almost an adult! I’m not a kid anymore!"
Besides, wasn’t Rong Xingyu younger than him anyway?
Wait—
Ding Wei’s eyes widened as realization hit him. "Uncle, how do you even know Rong Xingyu?!"
He was already shocked enough that his usually reserved and reclusive uncle had actually agreed to attend the Rong family’s banquet tonight.
But to find out that his uncle already knew Rong Xingyu? That was something he never saw coming.
When Ding Yixin first told him to deliver the gift to Rong Xingyu, Ding Wei’s jaw had almost dropped to the floor.
Then, when he finally found Rong Xingyu in the courtyard and called out his name, he saw someone standing right next to him—someone very familiar.
So, he froze on the spot before blurting out, "Uncle?"
It was so confusing. His uncle was already with Rong Xingyu why on earth did he send him there too?
As Ding Wei’s thoughts drifted further, his imagination started running wild. No way... could it be?
Whatever he was thinking made his face suddenly turn red. He looked awkward and hesitant as he mumbled, "Uncle... since my engagement with Rong Xingyu was canceled, you’re not thinking about getting us back together, are you?"
Ding Yixin: "..."
"If your brain isn’t working, you might as well donate it," Ding Yixin said flatly, his expression immediately turned cold. "Didn’t you already break off the engagement? What, are you regretting it now?"
Ding Wei choked on his words.
He suddenly remembered that he had been the one who wanted to end the engagement in the first place.
For some reason, the thought made him feel a little down.
He stammered, trying to sound defensive, "I-I’m not regretting it! I just thought... you looked like you were very satisfied with Rong Xingyu."
Ding Yixin’s gaze on him turned meaningful. His lips curved faintly as he raised an eyebrow. "I am indeed very satisfied."
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have revealed his true identity to Rong Xingyu so soon before he’d even had full control of the situation.
His fingers tapped rhythmically on his knee.
Originally, he could have continued staying by Rong Xingyu’s side under the guise of Dr. Ding and quietly drawing closer to him without arousing suspicion.
Ding Yixin was like an experienced hunter who had already prepared a perfect trap for the innocent and clueless little rabbit.
He had built the golden cage with precision and care.
But little by little, his patience had been worn away by the image of that slender waist he glimpsed during the sports meet, by the smooth bare back in the locker room, by the breathtaking leap of the "mermaid" on the school anniversary stage.
Ding Yixin realized then he could no longer wait.
For the first time in his life, he had lost patience over something he had to have.
After the anniversary, even when the Principal of Qibao Dwith School came to and now again tonight with Ding Wei present, he had deliberately torn off the mask of Dr. Ding in front of Rong Xingyu, trying to show his true self.
But he hadn’t expected Rong Xingyu’s reaction to be so intense.
He had clearly moved too fast.
He thought about the way Rong Xingyu had avoided his touch and hiding behind Rong Zhenqiao as if he couldn’t even bear to look at him.
Ding Yixin let out a quiet sigh.
It seemed... this road would be far more difficult than he had imagined.
At the Rong family’s old mansion.
The cake Rong Zhenqiao ordered wasn’t large, but it was perfectly portioned so that everyone got a slice.
Rong Zhihao sat nearby while watching closely as Rong Xingyu lifted a forkful of golden mango and put it into his mouth, his expression softening with satisfaction.
So... he really did like mango.
Rong Zhihao couldn’t help but wonder silently Is it even possible for someone to suddenly start liking something they once hated so much they couldn’t even stand the smell of it?
