Chapter 30: Prevent the Death of a Beastlord
Areis looked as though he had fallen into a trance, his gaze fixed on nothing in particular. The word ’ruining’ kept reiterating endlessly in his mind, echoing again and again, until Kenzie’s resurfacing voice finally dragged him back to reality.
"And what made you so disoriented and confused?" Kenzie asked.
Areis’s line of sight shifted to him, and he sighed once again. If it were possible, he wished everything would simply stop—so he could wake up back in his own world, lying on his bed, preparing for yet another boring lecture. Honestly, that sounded far better than this.
But no, that wasn’t happening. Instead, he was being dragged from one beast territory to another, with no real say in the matter.
"I’m sorry about that," Areis said finally, rubbing his temple. "My brain just... shut down for a bit. What were you saying?"
Kenzie had paused deliberately, waiting for Areis’s attention to fully return.
When he was certain it had, he continued, his tone measured. "Basically, the plan has changed with this new discovery. You’re human, as you said, and even though I don’t fully understand what that means yet, one thing is now clear."
He leaned slightly forward. "You can change into different races, right?"
’I’m not entirely sure,’ Areis thought. ’I’ve only disguised myself as a tiger so far... but I should be able to change into others if I want, shouldn’t I? The spell works based on my current dilemma.’
He directed the question inward, toward the System.
[Yes, it can.]
Areis nodded in response. Kenzie noticed and smiled lightly before continuing. "The human matter—I’ll look into that later. Right now, it isn’t the most important thing. What matters is the spell. You don’t need to pursue a lost cause by killing Lucien. Instead, we’ll create a scandal—a sexual blasphemy."
"And how is that done?" Areis asked, his voice cautious.
"On the day of the occasion, you’ll stay by my side as a wolfman," Kenzie explained calmly. "Later, you’ll meet Lucien. Get him drunk. Get the two of you into a room, where he’ll lie with you. Then, he’ll be discovered having slept with a tigerbeast."
Areis was utterly flabbergasted by Kenzie’s words. He wanted him to offer his body for this plan...to use himself as bait.
He shook his head in irritation. "So what, you want me to be a sex worker? Is that it?"
"If Lucien is given an aphrodisiac," Kenzie replied evenly, "and you manage to neutralize its effects, then you won’t have to do anything you don’t want to do."
"Hm..."
After a brief pause, he asked, "This new plan of yours, how exactly does it implicate the second prince?"
"Kinsmen, especially royals, are forbidden from engaging romantically with other beast races," Kenzie said. "If Lucien is found lying with a tigerbeast, which you’ll have turned into by then, he’ll be implicated. It will be considered a grave sin. One that won’t go unpunished."
"What sort of punishment?" Areis asked, his breathing uneven as he waited for the answer he already knew was coming.
"It could be death."
Of course, Kenzie didn’t disappoint.
He studied the expression on Areis’s face closely. Suspicion flickered briefly in his eyes, there were certain matters he sensed but chose not to pursue just yet. After a moment, he straightened and asked, "Are we good on this?"
Areis nodded, a smile etched onto his face, crafted to hide the turmoil beneath.
"Then let’s sign the contract," Kenzie said.
A glowing blue paper materialized before them, suspended in the air. "I’ve made some changes," he added. "Read it carefully and sign with your blood."
"Okay," Areis replied.
He stretched out his hand, and this time the paper responded instantly, floating down into his grasp. As it settled into his palm, Areis scanned the contents, and it read:
[Contract of Silent Compliance]
This Covenant binds two parties herein referred to as:
The Contractor and The Bound Party.
By acceptance and acknowledgment, the Bound Party willingly submits to the following terms and conditions, which shall take immediate effect upon signing.
1. Secrecy
The Bound Party shall not, under any circumstance, reveal their true identity, origin, or nature to any individual while this Covenant remains active.
2. Non-Hostility
The Bound Party shall not intend, plan, conspire, or act directly or indirectly to harm the Contractor in any form, whether physical, emotional, magical, or political.
3. Mandated Obedience
The Bound Party shall carry out the agreed task exactly as stated, without deviation, hesitation, refusal, or deliberate failure.
4. No Escape
The Bound Party shall not flee, hide, resist, or attempt to sever themselves from the Contractor’s authority, reach, or influence while bound by this Covenant.
5. Authority of Annulment
The right to annul, dissolve, or terminate this Covenant lies solely with the Contractor.
6. Breach
Any violation, partial or complete, shall invoke immediate punishment as determined by the Covenant.
7. Term
This Covenant shall remain in effect until the mandate is fulfilled in its entirety or annulled by the Contractor.
Upon signing, this Covenant becomes absolute and binding.]
The first, second, third, and even the fourth clauses sat well enough with Areis. But by the time he reached the rest, a faint frown creased his brow.
"I’ve got issues with some of the terms," he said at last, lifting his gaze from the glowing script.
Kenzie did not look surprised. Instead, he gestured lazily with one hand. "State them."
"First," Areis began, choosing his words carefully, "why are you the only one allowed to terminate the contract? I don’t want that. Add a clause stating that the contract can be terminated if a viable method is found. Second, you didn’t specify the mode of punishment."
Kenzie’s eyes hardened slightly, his tone turning brutal and edged with finality.
"Because it’s obvious," he said coldly. "It’s death. And I assume you wouldn’t want that."
"Do you mean to say," Areis asked slowly, "that I’ll be free if I do this for you?"
’Be free.’
Areis sighed. The word tasted bitter. He had only just realized how twisted the situation truly was. He was human—a race that would be coveted, hoarded, and caged the moment its value was fully understood. Freedom, for someone like him, was an illusion. If Kenzie ever learned the full gravity of his existence, he wouldn’t be a pawn anymore—he’d be a treasure locked away for safekeeping.
And so, he kept quiet.
Kenzie spoke again, oblivious to the storm in Areis’s head. "It’s not like you’d be able to walk freely through the kingdom even if I ’freed’ you. You’d still remain under my watch if the task is successful. And if it fails, it’s death."
’Just as I thought,’ Areis muttered.
"So," Kenzie pressed, watching him closely, "will you sign the contract?"
"I’m coming," Areis replied plainly.
Then, turning inward, he addressed the System.
’Hey. What do you think? Can I even sign another contract while bound to one already? I ran away, and yet Madam Barris’s contract doesn’t seem binding anymore. I guess I need to annul that. I can do that now, right? I should’ve gotten the 100 CEs even though you didn’t announce it.’
[You were in a constrained situation with the prince, which limited my ability to intervene earlier.
Yes, you have been awarded 100 Celestial Energies (CEs) for the successful completion of that task.
Current CE Balance: 120
Would you like to annul the contract binding you to Madam Barris?]
’Very much so.’
[Host should note:
• Annulment of the contract will cost 50 CEs.
• Accruement and permanent integration of the Beast Spell into the System inventory will cost 50 CEs.
Total Cost: 100 CEs
Proceed?]
’Yes.’
[Ding!
Transaction successful.

• The Host may activate or deactivate the Veil at will.
• The Host may switch between forms freely within a one-hour interval.
• Exceeding the interval will cost 10 CEs per additional transformation.

This skill has been upgraded for stability and concealment.]
’And... should I accept this contract?’
[At present, Host lacks viable alternatives.
Refusal will be interpreted as disloyalty and result in immediate execution.
Recommendation: Sign.]
"Hm..." Areis breathed out heavily, his chest rising and falling as he processed everything. Slowly, he fixed his eyes on the glowing paper once more.
He raised his thumb slightly. "And how do I draw blood—"
He never finished the sentence.
A sharp sting cut through his skin as Kenzie’s claw sliced cleanly into his thumb. Blood welled instantly.
Areis looked up at him, startled but silent, before pressing his bleeding thumb onto the designated seal. Blue light surged, flowing from the contract into their bodies, threading itself into their consciousness binding them.
As the light faded, the System chimed.
