Chapter 379: What Did You Think Would Happen?
[KOSTA]
"What?" King Zaffuto asked clearly, not expecting this from Kosta.
Well, that could be said for Kosta, too, right?
It had taken a lot for him to suppress his pure disgust for Sanjiro, and if this was to bear fruit, this wasn’t the time for him to give up. So, with a smile sitting prettily on his face, Kosta spoke again.
"My Erasthai rejected me, your grace. I have nothing that binds me to the walls of Kawai anymore. And since I must figure out how to hasten my last breaths, I chose Sanjiro. I am not telling you this so you can jail me or something.
"As it is, I have embraced my omega side, which makes me the weakest of all the Lycans in Kawai at this point. An omega claimed by a traitor is always going to be a target of the rebels.
"Consider this my final service to Kawai, your grace. If you don’t have any more questions for me, excuse me while I go tell my warriors that they can go home to their families," Kosta said, his tone so respectful that he felt gutted.
He wanted to hear Tamiko’s voice.
He wanted Tamiko to look at him.
To tell him that this was not how things were supposed to be.
He wanted Tamiko to give him an explanation for how ruthlessly he had been abandoned, but nothing came.
Not even a breath that was slow enough for Kosta to know that Tamiko had been affected by him. Even when he had spoken the words that would eventually break so many hearts, Kosta didn’t hear a change in Tamiko’s breathing.
It was all too stable, and Kosta knew that the lines had been drawn. This was his side of the war and he just had to do some crazy shit to trigger the king into taking him out. That was the only way.
Oh, but it was the worst of punishments for a Lycan Chief who had only ever loved Kawai with everything. A Chief who had done everything that his nation had wanted of him.
He had never questioned his missions. He just went on and fulfilled them, making sure to come home with a victory. He never cared how many years his missions needed him out of Kawai or within.
The only thing that he had been loyal to for years and years on end was the kingdom that was slowly spitting him out. The Kingdom that had ruined everything for him. But Kosta couldn’t hate Kawai even if he wanted to.
Over a thousand years of serving the kingdoms and the crown was a lot for him.
He had been loyal and fiercely so. Being a Kawai Lycan Chief had been his identity, and it was way important that the identity he held as the barbarian who shook the realm each time anyone heard he was around.
Perhaps this was the final salute for him. The one that would make him tell his warriors the good news. Maybe it was not what he had wanted but what the fuck was he supposed to do?
He couldn’t go to Yilena.
He couldn’t even stand seeing the owner after all this time. The house that was once his was still filled with his mingled secrets with Tamiko. That was not the kind of torture that Kosta was looking forward to.
His chamber at the palace was way too close to the Lycan prince’s chambers, and that was something that Kosta couldn’t let himself suffer through, too. He was not as strong, truly.
The only option left was to ride out the remaining lifeline one last time with Sanjiro by his side. Perhaps he would find peace in the afterlife and be with his siblings and family, right?
Maybe this time his mother wouldn’t leave, his father would hug him more, and Sahina would at least be proud of him, right?
"Have a good day, all of you," Kosta said, stepping out of his seat.
He wished that there was more to hold onto, but he knew there was nothing. With a smile on his face, Kosta walked away from the council room. He could feel the eyes on him and could hear the silent whispers of what he had just declared.
They wanted to stop him, but then they knew that Kosta was strong.
He may have embraced his omega side, but being on the battlefield for ten years had definitely hardened him enough for the realm to be able to protect himself regardless of what conditions he faced.
Perhaps that was why it felt so shallow when he talked about his omega side being his undoing.
That was a lie.
His only undoing was Prince Kaito Hinata.
Tamiko held the reins to everything that he wanted, and if Tamiko asked Kosta to jump, he would ask how high. Oh, but those were supposed to be sweet times. Funny how it all shifted.
"I brought this back," Kosta said when he got to the kitchen, the cup he had been carrying along like some trophy, still in his hands.
He knew that they were curious about what had forced him to this point, but many probably understood, given how the prince had gotten icy with Kosta.
Some dynamics were hard to understand, but what else was Kosta supposed to be holding onto? His whole life felt like a sham, something that no one would understand well. But then that was what he had been cursed with.
"Okay," was all Kiyoi let out as he watched Kosta place the cup on the table and make his way out again. Kosta could hear the Lycans talking about what they had just heard. Perhaps someone had already leaked that he was leaving for the borders.
Some of the Lycans had sadness on their faces for the man they had failed to protect, while some were still having difficulty connecting with him because of the thick, traitorous scent on him.
But that didn’t seem to bother Kosta anymore.
He was free, and he was just waiting for the final phase so he could renounce his family. Oh, but it was a fate so sinister, but it wasn’t like he was strong enough to stand before Tamiko and fight him, right?
"The chatter is insane," Sanji said the moment he saw Kosta at the door of his shelter.
The Lycan Chief had done something impossible.
He had made a lot of sacrifices, but this had to be the craziest by far. It was not what any of the warriors had expected, especially when the Lycan Lord Sadako announced to them that they were free to leave their posts and go back onto Kawai.
They had cheered for that until they heard that the Lycan Chief was sacrificing his time to stay at the border with Sanjiro. Perhaps that was why their faces were twisted when Kosta came back.
"Interesting. So, you know we are stuck here until the end of our lives, yeah?" Kosta mused, and Sanji stared at the omega like he had never seen this side of him. Well, to be fair, even Kosta hadn’t seen this side of himself.
It was all too new for him, and he was looking forward to the next few years of his life.
"Hold on... is that... Tamiko?!" Sanji asked, and Kosta laughed it off.
"No, for real. He looks mad mad. What the fuck did you say to him?"
"Looks like we’ll get our findings today, Sanji."
