Chapter 436: Blood, Fire, Ashes... A Mad King’s Vengeance [8]
[ZAFFUTO]
The king just watched, his lips curled up in a disapproving smile as he stared at the two Grealors left on this huge field.
"You beg for the man who tore through families without thinking of the consequences. For a man who ripped through innocents. Children. Infants. Unborn children. That is who you plead for?
"A man who left kids in ruins just because he wanted to pass a message? That is who you dare to plead for? You ask me for mercy on behalf of the same man who mocked the queen’s pleas for mercy?" Zaffuto asked.
He was clearly amused by the turn of events.
This was not pleasing at all, and he refused to bow to pressure.
He could see Ashton clenching his jaw, probably fighting back a retort, and honestly, Zaffuto didn’t want to give mercy to the man. Mercy was never to be wasted on such filth. Perhaps that was why the king made his decision.
The king’s hands reached out to Ashton, not in a strike, but in what seemed like a stroke of the alpha’s back. It was almost like the king was reliving a false sense of comfort.
Just when Ashton was relaxed, as his son saw the king and thought mercy was all he was getting, King Zaffuto pressed his fingers into the alpha’s back, his spine, the very thing that could anchor the alpha into any other wars if ever he survived that long.
The king let out a low, disbelieving laugh as he stared at the art piece, the great work of his hands.
It was broken.
That spine.
It was already snapped.
But it wasn’t the way that the mad king wanted it.
At least not yet, because the king kept searching, holding, until he was sure what he needed was within his grasp.
What was heard next had the Lycan warriors instinctively stepping back like they were the ones who had been hurt by the king.
The sound of the alpha’s spine cracking, of bones breaking, of the spine being ripped from its hold in the alpha’s back tore through the silent battlefield, triggering everyone.
Everyone.
That sickening crack was not just a one-time thing, and the king didn’t seem to want to stop. The alpha’s back arched and collapsed like a deflated balloon that had just popped.
It was not something anyone in their right mind would ever have willingly wanted to bear witness to. It was the kind of shit that scared even the devil chief. This was not something that could be spoken of lightly, and the alpha screamed.
The man who had been sure he was with everything he wanted let out a loud, blood-curdling scream; one that would probably be etched into his son’s memory for whatever was left to his life.
It was a cruel sight. The ultimate ruin, and the king had no regrets about it.
King Zaffuto didn’t care that this was not what anyone would have expected from him. He didn’t care that the world was pinning in a way that no one would ever truly understand.
What the king cared for was that sound.
"Nooo!!" Gabe cried out, the reality hitting so hard.
For a split second, Tamiko almost felt bad for the man. He almost felt bad from the sight before him, but the image of him being torn off his weak, fully pregnant mother, and his mother pleading for mercy, hit him hard.
And Tamiko watched with a sick smile on his face.
What his father was doing was justice.
The kind that was delivered perfectly. This man had ruined the lives of women and children, he had torn apart families, and for almost forty years, he had remained unapologetic about it.
There was no reason for the prince to feel terrible for him.
This was the price of messing with the mad king. A beast that had been damaged not by fate, but by grief, a lifelong grief. The same grief that Ashton had proudly stepped on like it was everything he would want to deal with.
This was the reminder of what shouldn’t have happened, and as the Lycans watched their king keep crashing the spine, they were never a dead one, because the man was never silent.
He had stayed away, sure, and had mourned, but the devil that had been beneath that face was still there. Raging and waiting for the perfect moment to strike back. The mad psycho who was always retrieving people was still there.
That was why a few of the prayers to the king of mercy would only ever rock through Tamiko. They got distant flashbacks of what their king had once been like before he hadn’t Liana, and frankly, they were not the prettiest of flashbacks.
This was just a taste of what the Lycans had been through before the king met Liana, and now, they were seeing it again. Perhaps with the prince, the king would only ever be a monster on the battlefield, right?
"Mercy... please, your majesty," Gabe cried out helplessly.
He couldn’t stand this.
He couldn’t imagine the pain his father was feeling now. The man was already a human for fucks sake, and not it was like they were going to have to deal with the consequences of fucking around with Kawai now.
They were finding out the result of their invasion, which clearly didn’t go the way they had planned.
This was insanity, but the king didn’t care one bit about it.
Not even as Ashton lay face-first into the first that he had fallen into.
Not even when the alpha’s shoulders fell useless and limp.
Not even when the alpha’s frame curled inwards, and his chest caved in too.
The alpha’s head slouched to the side without support, making him unable to even look up and see his son. What the fuck was he even supposed to see? The screams from his son filled his ears, but then his own screams kept him awake and in so much pain.
Ashton had never felt this kind of pain, not even when he had fought with Zaffuto long before this. He has never been this defeated and lost. This was the worst kind of fate for Alpha Ashton.
Hell, he couldn’t even be an alpha anymore.
He was a broken man, and Zaffuto had done it. He had ruined the great alpha who had spent ages talking shit about his wife and his son. He had ruined the man, and still, he was out for more blood.
Oh, gods.
"He’s all I have left," Gabe pleaded, his ears ringing so loudly that he wasn’t even sure the king could hear him. But he hoped that this time, the supernatural hearing they had all been bestowed with would make it all make sense for them.
This was nasty.
"Good for you. At least you have a father who is not searching for you when you don’t have a reason to mourn. Remember him like this. Your father. The mighty Grealor alpha, reduced to whatever the fuck this is.
"Remember the man who made men widows and children orphans. Who snatched families and tore them apart in the cruelest of ways. Remember him as the man who preyed on unborn children because he didn’t have the guts to come face me directly.
"This is what he brought on himself..."
