Chapter 29: On Display
Everyone in the room seemed to be more alert as they turned their whole bodies toward Lucas’ direction.
Mira was happy to no longer be the source of attention or spectacle anymore until he started walking in her exact direction.
In just three strides, he was in front of her. There was absolutely no warning or even his usual command spoken because what he did next wasn’t something Mira could have thought of.
One moment, she was seated there, and the next her world was tilting so suddenly as his hard arm hooked under her waist and under her knees, then lifted her up so effortlessly like she weighed nothing at all.
"Hey... Hey!" Mira shrieked loudly as she started to flail against him. "What the hell, are you crazy? Put me down!"
But she was already over his shoulders like he was some sort of caveman and was already walking toward the entrance, his hold never faltering on her body.
"Listen to me!" she yelled as he twisted to try and pry herself free somehow, but his arm was like a chain around her, locking her in place.
"You can’t just carry people like that!" She yelled, but he ignored her every word.
"Put me down!"
All the pushing and flailing was like attacking a mountain because he didn’t even grunt or stumble.
He succeeded in carrying her out of the dining hall, down the hallway, and was even walking up the stairs.
None of her protests were working, yet she couldn’t bring herself to stop them.
"Lucas, put me down right now! Lucas! I am not some handbag you can just toss around!" She kicked again. "I swear, I’ll bite you if you do not put me down this instant! I can walk!"
But her shouts still didn’t yield anything. Even the maids they met on the way went about their day like this was the kind of thing that happened regularly around here.
Lucas didn’t stop until he reached her bedroom door. Then he shouldered it open, still without slowing down, and crossed the room in just four steps.
Afterwards, he dropped her carelessly onto the massive bed.
Mira landed softly, but it still managed to rattle her. She sat there for a second to catch her breath from all the yelling she had done.
Then, as she came to her senses, she scrambled backward like a crab and pushed herself up against the headboard while clutching a pillow to her stomach, like it could shield her from anything at all.
"What the—" she finally let out. "What the hell is wrong with you!"
He didn’t even look affected. He just stood over the bed before replying.
"Why," he started in a low and dangerous rasp that was far more terrifying than any shout from him could be, "do you think it is acceptable to parade yourself in front of people looking like that?"
"Like what?" Mira questioned as she glared back at him.
"Like some discarded doll in a flimsy dress," Lucas responded.
The question was so absurd and infuriating that it unlocked her voice even further. "I had no idea that you run some sort of restaurant in your own home! And I wanted to leave!" She yelled.
"I was going to leave after some darn woman there intentionally spilled warm tea on me, but what did they do? They blocked my way and then dragged me in there!" She paused before adding, "Who even are those people? Why are they here?"
"That is none of your business, Lorena," he cut her off. "Your only business here is what I say it is! Instead of poking around things that aren’t your business! It’s exactly the reason I asked the maid to bring you breakfast right here in your room! So what on earth are you coming downstairs in, something that looks like panties?"
Mira saw the chance to tell him about what the maid brought her. Heck! It was still in the room even. "Well, now that you asked, the maid brought me—"
But he interrupted her yet again. "I mean, look at you. You walked in dripping wet in that dress like that. Do you even realize how you look right now?"
Her face was feeling hot as humiliation mixed with rage while Lucas’ gaze dropped to her chest deliberately, exactly where the soaked silk was now clinging to her.
"Look at the state you’re in," he sneered at her. "Your nipple is practically poking like it’s making yet another presentation, and I can remember this exact situation the first time you were here. Are you used to going around naked or what?"
"Stop! Stop talking to me like that!" she snapped as she pulled the sheets around herself.
"I mean... I know that you’re used to selling your body and showing it around," Lucas threw at her coldly as he picked each word mercilessly. "But for heaven’s sake, can you not even try to act normal while you’re under my roof? Must you always be on display?"
The shaming he was throwing at Mira was too much as her fists clenched by her side.
He was so close that she could smell him, and she wished she could slap him right across the face to put him in his place.
But he seemed to be reading her mind. "Don’t," he said in a voice that dropped to a near growl of warning and command in one.
The silence that lingered between them as his eyes glared at hers was so intense before he finally broke it himself.
"Get yourself cleaned up and dressed," he commanded in a flat and bored tone with dismissive eyes that looked like he was discarding garbage.
"Since you’ve decided to showcase yourself before I wanted to anyways, might as well do it properly. Be downstairs in ten minutes. I don’t care how you do it."
He didn’t bother waiting for a response because he turned on his heel and walked out of the room.
