Chapter 40

Chapter 40: For Everything
Damian seemed to be trying so hard to contain his anger as it seemed like Lucas always succeeded in bringing the worst out of him at this point.
"I can buy whatever the fuck I want for my sister!" he snapped. "It’s not even any of your business, is it?"
Lucas rolled his eyes just before leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed. He wore that same smug expression that Mira found herself starting to hate. He looked completely relaxed, like he was enjoying some private stage drama.
"You know, the way you always talk about her like you’re blood is almost admirable. But then, it’s fact that you’re not even related by blood, so I don’t seem to get why you keep up this performance of yours."
His smirk even widened as if he was baiting and hunting a prey.
Damian got off the bed and walked over to Lucas to face him directly.
"That means nothing. She’s my sister, and I know her better than you ever will!"
Mira was starting to get scared about this exchange as she knew how annoying Lucas could be and how easily reactive Damian was.
Lucas could successfully poke anyone.
Easily
.
Lucas chuckled as he pushed himself off the doorway and took a deliberate step into the room and away from Damian.
"Relax," he said in a tone that was obviously mocking. "Not everything has to be a fight, Damian. Take a chill pill, will you?"
"When it comes to Mira, I’m ready to fight as many as possible for as long as possible," Damian retorted.
But Lucas seemed to be done taunting or provoking him as he turned his attention to Mira instead. His smugness suddenly melted away to be replaced by something much more different and new, at least, from Mira’s perspective.
"Lorena," he started. "Are you okay now? Did you manage to eat what was brought for you?"
Mira’s body coiled.
Since when did Lucas Atkins speak in such a soft voice? And to her?
She didn’t even know whether to accept it or run away.
Even Damian could tell.
"You’re doing too much now, Lucas," Damian scoffed as he crossed his arms. "I mean, even the blind could see that you never ask her that. So I wonder why you’re putting on a show for me. I can read everything about her, so just cut the crap and stop acting."
A slow, dangerous smirk suddenly spread across Lucas’ face as his eyes locked on Damian. "Oh really? You can read her?" he asked in a whisper.
"So does her body tell you right now that we made love right here? On this very bed that you’re standing next to and even seated on? Or was that a pretense too?"
"Lucas!" Mira cried out with a mixture of horror and anger.
Like, who the fuck even says something like that? Why do things always go from zero to a hundred with him?
"That’s a freaking lie!" Mira added.
Damian stalked towards Lucas immediately. "What the hell did you just say? Is this some sort of joke to you?"
But Lucas wasn’t done. "Oh please, you don’t have to deny it, Lorena." His voice was soft but mocking, even intimate in a way that made Mira’s skin crawl.
"You were literally writhing beneath me just last night, why bother denying it?"
Mira looked away as she felt like her whole face was set on fire. She buried her head so deep it felt like she was trying to disappear into her own self if that was possible.
This was humiliating and so, so disgusting. The way he’s making it seem like they really did anything, and she couldn’t even deny it that much because they almost did.
Damian stepped closer to Lucas again. Even though Lucas was still taller and way more intimidating than he was, even with how much he was trying.
"I don’t care whatever you did. So stop saying bullshit!"
Lucas’ grin only got wider, like he was obviously enjoying this altercation. Like he was hungrily feeding off the chaos he had just created by himself.
"You know, Lorena, the way you’re so desperate to reassure your brother..." his eyes flicked to Mira, then back to Damian quickly. "Makes me wonder. One would think he’s a lover catching you cheating or something."
"Shut. The. Hell. Up." Damian’s voice went threatening.
There was something in his tone that made Mira almost feel uncomfortable. But she quickly shoved it away.
Lucas merely tilted his head like a curious cat.
"What? I can’t just help but wonder with the way you’re behaving right now, of course. Because why on earth do you even care so much?" His taunting smile then turned predatory. "That’s my wife... and your own little sister, as you say. Or is there something else you both need telling me?"
The question seemed to pull all the air in the room to itself as Mira suddenly felt sick.
How on earth had this taken such a worst turn? Even thinking about it was so disgusting.
"Lucas, do not even try to insinuate that disgusting shit!" Her voice came out very loud and much more defensive.
"That’s my brother! My. Brother. So saying all these things is digesting and humiliating. No brother wants to hear about his little sister’s sex life, even if she’s married!"
The words rushed out of her throat in such a rush that she didn’t think was even humanly possible. She was just so desperate to shut down this game...
whatever sick game that Lucas was trying to play here.
Lucas tilted his head again, this time with an amused expression on his face. "Hmm, you think so? Because I’m not so sure that he thinks so too."
That did it for Damian. He had reached his breaking point.
"You know what?" he started. "I’ve just realized what a fool I am to even entertain this silly little game of yours."
He turned to Mira as his whole demeanor shifted from rage to desperate protectiveness. His arms wrapped around her in such a fierce hug like he was only trying to shield her from the bad world.
"Always pick up your phone when I call, Lori. Please," he whispered against her hair with an emotional voice. "I’ve got somewhere to be now, and don’t forget to call me if you need anything. Anything at all, okay?"
Mira nodded, and before she knew it, Damian was gone.
The door was slammed so hard behind him as he left.
Mira simply sat back in the bed as she stared at the closed door and felt like she’d just survived a hurricane.
"Thanks for successfully grossing him out," she finally said to Lucas in an accusatory and flat tone. "You didn’t even let him stay long when we had so much to catch up on, but I guess that was clearly your aim."
Lucas shrugged like a naive little thing being falsely accused. "I did nothing."
Mira rolled her eyes. She was so done entertaining him right now, even though for some reason, she could not feel as angry at him as she used to be.
He stepped closer to the bed. "Oh, and I wanted to tell you that you’re coming to my office tomorrow." His tone suddenly sounded like he was talking to a business associate. "Jack will pick you up around 10 a.m."
Mira looked up at him, confused. "What for?"
Lucas was now wearing his bored look. "Have you been so relaxed now that you forgot that you have a lot of court issues and other things to sort out? Or do you plan on hiding away forever? Stop asking stupid questions."
Oh right! Mira had almost forgotten that she had issues with the government, the people, and so many more.
Lucas turned toward the door as he was clearly done with the conversation, but Mira suddenly spoke up.
"I’m sorry," she said.
The words slipped out before she could stop them, thus making Lucas freeze mid-step.
In fact, his whole body went rigid like he had just been struck by lightning.
He turned slightly, looking surprised and suspicious. "For what?"
Mira looked down at her hands as her voice came out soft and broken. "For everything."
