Chapter 51: Crazy dreams
Mira’s eyes opened slowly like someone had poured honey over her eyelids,
or better still, glue.
Her body felt heavy and ached badly, like she’d axed wood in her sleep.
She blinked a few times before her world came into focus as she wondered where she was at first.
Her bedroom? Lucas’ mansion. Right.
But how did I even get here?
She reached up to rub her face and winced a little when her fingers brushed her cheek. It was warm and tender, like someone had slapped her.
Oh right! Evelyn slapped me yesterday.
The memory finally started coming back in pieces.
The missing bullion, Sanders Media collapsing, Evelyn’s slap, how she wanted to confront Lucas about going back on his word.
The woods.
The wolf.
The—
She stopped to rewind that part.
The wolf that turned into Lucas.
A nervous laugh bubbled up from her chest before she could stop it.
"Well, unless I’m crazy," she whispered to herself in the empty room, "there’s absolutely no way a wolf turned into a human. Or Lucas, for that matter."
She pressed her palms against her eyes as if trying to sort reality from whatever dream her stressed-out brain had cooked up.
That had to have been a dream, or an imagination?
Everything felt so blurred to her. Like trying to remember a movie she watched while half asleep. You know things happened, but the details keep slipping away like water through your fingers.
Maybe I’m just losing my mind.
And that was a real possibility at this point. After all, so many crazy things had happened this month alone.
From waking up in an actress’ body, being married to a psychopath, being hated by the public, to losing millions of dollars and watching her new mother slap her?
Well, having a mental breakdown seemed pretty reasonable at this point.
It had to just be a trauma response or whatever.
But then there was one tiny detail that still bothered her. One piece of the puzzle that just didn’t fit anywhere.
She still couldn’t understand nor remember how she got back to her room.
"I’m sure I went into the woods to confront him," she muttered. "Or did I not? Did I just come into the room straightaway? Did I imagine going into the woods?"
But then she clearly remembered storming out of the house, tearing off her heels, and running barefoot into those dark woods.
So how could she not piece the rest?
"Did I confront him or not?"
Her thoughts were tangled like headphone wires in a pocket, and the harder she tried to remember, the more they all made no sense.
At least not the sense she could accept.
Another nervous laugh escaped, and this one sounded slightly unhinged even to her own ears.
"God, I sound so crazy. I must actually be going crazy. Nothing makes sense."
Nah, she just had to have come back to her room somehow. Her head was just messing with her.
There were all logical explanations. Much more logical than, ’
I saw a wolf change into Lucas.’
And as if that was not enough, she had to dream about him too.
Ell
.
Her chest tightened as the dream she had last night came back to her.
She hadn’t dreamed about him in years. It was weird that she was getting those dreams back again.
Ugh. Now I can’t help but wonder how he’s doing now. He never even contacted me since then. I hope he didn’t get caught by those people.
She shook her head to get that out because Ell wasn’t the point right now.
She might be running mad, and she couldn’t be dwelling on a childish first love that might even be dead.
She might get thrown in a psychiatric hospital anytime soon. And honestly, she felt like it might be needed.
A soft knock on the door made her jump so hard that she nearly fell off the bed.
"Uh... come in." She called out, her voice coming out more parched than she expected.
Callis entered quietly while carrying a breakfast tray that smelled amazing.
Toast, eggs, and coffee that might actually save her sanity.
"Good morning, Lorena." Callis set the tray on the bedside table with ease, and then her eyes swept over Mira as she took in the messy hair, probably noticing the red mark on her cheek.
"I didn’t get to see much of you yesterday, and you even ended up coming back later than Lucas did. Where were you?"
Mira stiffened at the question. She hadn’t expected to be interrogated by Callis, but then, seeing how she was always concerned about her, it was plausible.
She wondered if she should tell her how she was feeling right now, how she felt like she was losing her mind and all.
"Uhm... I was just out," she said finally. "I needed some air before returning home."
Callis’ eyes were unreadable as she studied Mira’s face, like she wished to mention the red mark but was too polite to do so.
Mira, on the other hand, was still battling her sanity.
Should I just ask and call it a day? About wolves and all that?
But the words didn’t come out. She couldn’t allow them.
She’ll definitely think I’m insane. Hell, even I think I’m insane for blurring real life and dreams.
Callis seemed to notice her battling within herself because she sat on the edge of the bed. "You know you can always trust me, right? Whatever it is, you can just tell me..."
For a little moment, Mira almost did just that. She almost opened her mouth, but instead of any of those words coming out, she just shook her head, saying, "I’m fine, Callis. Really."
Callis clearly didn’t believe her but didn’t push it either.
"Well then, you should eat on time. We’re going out today." She said in a gentle but firm tone that meant she was taking no for an answer.
"Going out?" Mira looked up, confused. "Where?"
But Callis was already heading for the door with a mysterious smile on her lips.
"It’s a surprise."
