Welcome To Hell, Dear Wife-Chapter 66: Banishment

Chapter 66

Chapter 66: Banishment
Leo looked up from his gingerbread house with his small face bright with innocent confusion. "Mama! This is my new friend! She likes the gingerbread!"
His little voice was so full of pure joy, so proud to introduce his new friend to his mother.
Glory also stood up from her chair, her face creased with genuine concern as she took in the woman’s wildness and rage. "Sienna, what is it? Calm down now, you’re scaring the boy."
But Sienna wasn’t listening to anyone. She merely moved into the house with movement so hard and furious that they even looked violent without her touching anyone yet.
She didn’t glance at her mother standing to calm her down either, as her entire focus was on Mira like a laser.
"You."
The single word came out of Sienna’s mouth filled with so much venom and pure hatred that it actually seemed to poison the air in the once cozy room.
"What the hell... are you doing in my home?"
Mira stood up finally while her heart began pounding so hard. She immediately held her hands out in front of her with palms facing Sienna as if trying to look as non-threatening as possible.
"I’m sorry, I was just—"
"You were just what?" Sienna’s voice exploded finally, raising to such a sudden amount that it made Leo flinch and Glory take a step back.
"Corrupting my son? Planning your next move and surveying what else you can take from us?"
Glory stepped between them at this point, using her small body to create a barrier. She was utterly bewildered at what was happening as she looked back and forth between her granddaughter and this young woman she had welcomed into her home.
"Sienna! You need to explain yourself already! This is such outrageous behavior!"
"Look at her, grandma!" Sienna screamed as her voice cracked. She thrust a shaking finger directly at Mira’s face as if identifying a criminal in a lineup. "Look at her! That’s Lorena Sanders!"
The name was like a bomb going off, like someone had thrown a bucket of ice water over everything warm and safe.
All the heat from the fireplace, the sweetness from the cookies, every single joy seemed to be sucked out of the air in an instant.
Even Glory’s face went completely slack as her mouth opened slightly, and her eyes that had been kind just moments before widened as she turned slowly.
The kind grandmotherly warmth that had made her feel safe for the first time in days evaporated like it had never even existed, only to be replaced by hatred that was so deep and old that it seemed passed down through generations.
"Sanders?" Glory whispered the name like it was a curse word. Like it physically hurt her mouth to form the syllables alone. "Gregory Sanders’ daughter?"
Just like that, the sweet old woman that had shared cookies and stories disappeared completely.
"Get out!" Sienna snarled as she advanced on Mira now. "Get the hell out of my house, you viper! You snake! Poison!"
Leo began to cry at that point, and not the quiet sniffle of a child who scraped their knee.
No, these were loud frightened sobs that shook his whole small body.
"No! Mama, no! Don’t be mean to her!" He tried to run towards Mira with his little legs, but Sienna’s hand shot out and caught him by the shoulder quickly.
"You see?" Sienna yelled more. "You see how she twists things so fast? How she gets her claws in so easily like her father did?"
Glory was no longer a bystander now. She moved like a vengeful spirit that had been waiting years for this moment and went straight to the fireplace only to grab the broom that had been leaning so innocently.
"You," she hissed as she advanced on Mira with the broom held out in front of her like a weapon. "You people’s greed burned my son and killed his wife! It destroyed a lot!"
Mira stumbled backwards, making her hip hit the edge of the table, but the horror of the turnaround happening now was enough for her not to feel that pain.
"I... I don’t understand..."
"Liar!" Glory shrieked and swung the broom down at Mira’s legs.
She started to swat at Mira like she was some kind of pest that needed to be swept out of the house,
like dirt that needed to be cleaned.
Sienna moved to the kitchen area too and grabbed a ceramic canister from the shelf. She yanked the lid off so hard that it clattered on the floor.
And then she started flinging handfuls of its content at Mira like she was performing some kind of ritual or trying to exorcise a demon.
Only when it hit Mira did she get that it was salt.
"Get out! Get your poison out of our home! Get your evil away from my son!"
The white crystals showered on Mira in waves. They stung her eyes in ways that made them water and clung to her hair and clothes.
They even got into her mouth when she gasped for air.
Leo, on the other hand, was screaming now, full-on hysterical screaming that echoed off the walls of the small cottage.
He launched himself at his mother while trying to grab her arm with both of his small hands as if to make her stop what she was doing.
"Stop it! Stop hurting my friend! I hate you! I hate you!"
His words, which were obviously just meant to defend Mira, only seemed to make everything even worse as Sienna’s face twisted in pain like the little boy had betrayed her.
But that pain quickly transformed back to fury as she shook him off her arm roughly, not even caring when he stumbled.
"She is not your friend!" Sienna shouted down at him. "She is the reason my parents,
your grandparents,
are dead!"
Before Leo could grab her again, Sienna scooped the struggling, sobbing boy into her arms, and even while he fought her like a wild animal by beating his fists at her back and kicking his legs, he was still just a little child so it did nothing.
"She’s nice! She’s my friend!" he kept yelling as his voice got higher and desperate. His eyes found Mira’s over his mother’s shoulder, and they were full of confusion. "Don’t go away! Please, don’t go."
Mira was still paralyzed in place where she stood, and she hated how the boy was being made to cry so much.
She hadn’t done anything to these people, but Lorena’s father had, and that was enough.
Glory used the broom to push Mira towards the door as she jabbed the bristles against her legs, back, and arms.
Each jab was punctuated with words that spat out venom.
"You."
Jab
. "Bring."
Jab
. "Nothing."
Jab
. "But."
Jab
. "Death."
Jab
.
"Never come back. Ever!"
Mira kept backing up, trying to avoid the broom and find the door at the same time such that her heel caught on the woven rug and she stumbled.
She fell hard and landed on one knee on the wooden floor while the pain shot up through her leg.
From a room in the cottage, Leo’s cries reached a fever pitch that didn’t seem human anymore. "Don’t send her away, mama! I’ll be good, I promise I’ll be good! I’ll never even ask you for anything again!"
The desperation in his voice and how it held on every word made Mira’s vision blur with tears.
Sienna’s voice cut through her son’s crying. "She will be gone, Leo. She was never here for you! She’s only here to survey our home and bring problems like her father did!"
Glory grabbed Mira’s arm with surprising strength for such an old woman and yanked her to her feet. She practically dragged her through the last few steps to the front door, yanked the door open, and threw Mira out.
"If you ever come near my family again," Glory said in a very frightening voice that was even worse than when she had been yelling,
"I will forget that I am an old woman and claw your eyes out of their evil sockets!"
