Chapter 101: Don’t Interfere, Ethan!
Viktor sat in the dim light of his study, feet propped on the coffee table, a half-empty bottle of red wine in his hand. The room smelled like oak and cigar smoke, even though no one was smoking. Luka sprawled across the couch opposite him, tie loose, shirt unbuttoned, a glass dangling from his fingers. He was drunk... really drunk. His words slurred together as he waved the glass around.
"And then... then Dad sets me up with this girl, right? She’s a Beta and she’s from a really nice family. But I show up and start talking about my ’collection’ of rare diseases. I told her I cough up spiders every full moon." Luka burst into laughter, nearly spilling his drink. "She ran out so fast!"
Viktor took a slow sip of wine. He wasn’t listening. Not really. His mind was on Elias. He was thinking so much about him. How he left earlier and didn’t even look back
’Is he okay at the Voss house? Are they feeding him well? I hope they are treating him right. Is he thinking too much about what that doctor said about choices and contract? Only if he says yes to me,’
He’d texted Elias three times today, called twice. But there was no response from Elias. Nothing. He was sure that Elias was probably asleep or ignoring him. The thought made his chest tight.
"You’re not even laughing at what I’m saying," Luka whined, sitting up. "Come on, Vik. That was gold."
Viktor grunted. "You’re ruining perfectly good dates. Dad’s gonna stop trying soon since that’s what you want."
"Good!" Luka flopped back. "I don’t want some arranged thing. I want..." He hiccuped. "I want what you have."
Viktor’s grip tightened on the bottle.
"I don’t have anything."
"Sure you do. You have Elias and that insane compatibility results... 96.7%. That’s like... soulmate shit." Luka grinned sloppily. "You’re whipped, bruh."
"Shut up."
Luka kept going.
"Oh! I’m so jealous of you. I bet he’s sleeping like a baby right now, maybe curled up in some fancy Voss bed. Probably dreaming about you. You two had better end up together and give up on Clara and her family,"
"You know that’s not possible. For now. That bitch’s father would do anything to get his revenge on me for killing his son,"
Luka laughed and poured another drink for himself.
"I don’t even remember what he looked like but he was a complete psychopath. Shouldn’t the Moreau family be thankful to us for getting rid of that scum?"
Viktor sighed as he looked away from his drunk brother and ran his finger through his hair. Luka was right, but the Moreau family wouldn’t see it that way. To be honest, the Moreau family do not care about the person that Viktor had killed. Viktor could compensate them with money but they were after something else. Something that’ll bind the Drago family together with the Moreau.
"What exactly is that old fart after? Protection?" He mumbled to himself and before Luka could say anything...
Viktor’s phone buzzed on the table, loudly. He glanced at the screen and saw the caller ID.
’’Ethan Voss.’’
A frown appeared on his face as he glared at the phone. He wasn’t expecting a midnight call, most espresso from Ethan Voss. It didn’t look or sound normal. Ethan barely spoke to him at events. He never spoke to anyone else. So why?
Luka leaned over, squinting.
"Who’s that?"
"Ethan," Viktor said, thumb hovering. He could ignore it. But he immediately thought of Elias. He thought maybe... just maybe he was getting a call because something was wrong at the Voss house...
He answered. "Hello?"
Click. The line went dead the second he spoke.
Viktor stared at the phone.
"What the hell?"
Luka cackled.
"He hung up on you! Classic. Real... Classic"
Viktor dialled back. But it went straight to voicemail.
"Is this bastard messing with me? Do I look like I’m in the mood for pranks?"
Luka rolled off the couch, landing on the floor with a thud.
"Who cares? More wine!"
Viktor stood, head spinning a little from the alcohol. "You got anything to do tomorrow?"
Luka mumbled something into the carpet. Sounded like "sleep" and "die."
Viktor face-palmed as he groaned in frustration. "Idiot." He grabbed his phone. "I’m going to the Voss house in the morning. I need to see him. Elias."
Luka’s snores answered him.
.
.
The next morning, Ethan hadn’t slept. He couldn’t sleep throughout the night. He sat at the kitchen island, with dark circles under his eyes and a glass of water untouched in front of him. The house was quiet... too quiet. His mind kept replaying the club. The chains. The bids. That omega host’s laugh.
"Fuck! I should stop thinking about it for now. I can’t let it ruin my morning,"
He picked up his phone. Scrolled to Elias’s number and dialled.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Hello? Uncle Ethan!"
Ethan smiled despite everything.
"Hey, Lila. How’s my favourite girl?"
"I’m good!"
"I’m relieved. Where are you at now?" Ethan asked just to make sure they were safe.
"We’re at home now. The old one."
Ethan’s stomach dropped. "The old house?"
He thought they would head to the Drago house or something after that ridiculous matching result.
"Yeah. Brother said we’ll leave soon when he gathers some money. He’s out buying food. He left his phone so no one could steal it."
"Ha! That’s something Elias could do," Ethan rubbed his temple. "Listen, kiddo. I’m sorry about my mom. What she did... it wasn’t right."
"It’s fine," Lila said cheerfully. "I like our house. It’s cosy but... I can’t stop thinking about my mom and dad. Brother is also sad. He didn’t eat yesterday."
Ethan felt his heart clench in pain.
"Do you know his bank details? I can send money."
"Nope. He never tells me money stuff."
Of course. Elias was too proud to receive money from people.
"I see... Then..."
The butler appeared in the doorway. "Sir, I apologise for interrupting but you have some guests."
Ethan frowned. "This early? What kind of guest would arrive at someone’s home this early?"
"The Drago brothers."
Ethan froze. He wasn’t shocked that the Drago brothers came here. He remembered the message he got yesterday. He was sure that people were watching him, but he just couldn’t prove it. It was as if they knew he was going to call Viktor and they sent that message and the photo.
It wasn’t just a coincidence, was it?
He just couldn’t let them think he really called Viktor to his house.
He ended the call. "Thanks, Lila. I’ll talk to you soon."
He rushed to the front door, heart pounding. If they knew Viktor was here...
He burst outside.
Viktor stood by his car, phone in hand, expression cold. Luka leaned against the hood, puffing a thick cigar, sunglasses hiding his hangover. Four armed men waited by two SUVs.
Ethan forced a smile.
"Sir Viktor. Sir Luka. Morning."
Viktor’s eyes narrowed, but he smiled back... tight, fake.
"Ethan. Morning. You look tense. Oh! Don’t worry... we’re not here for trouble. We just want to talk."
He waved at his men.
"You all... Wait there."
The men nodded and retreated.
Ethan exhaled. "Come in."
They settled in the living room. Luka sprawled on the couch, cigar smoke curling. Viktor sat straight, legs crossed.
"So," Viktor started, "...why the midnight call?"
Ethan hesitated. He didn’t know what to say. The truth? A lie? He went with half.
"I... found something. A club. Outside the city. They’re selling omegas."
Luka choked on the smoke as he beat his chest. "The Eclipse?"
Ethan nodded. "Yes... That one,"
Viktor leaned forward. "You went there?"
"I didn’t mean to. I got an anonymous tip," Ethan said. "I was invited and I saw it. Everything. The bids and how they were treated as slaves. They all had tattoos that bind them."
Luka whistled. "You poked the bear, man."
"Ethan Voss. Don’t interfere," Viktor said firmly. "We know about it. The raid has been planned. It’ll happen in a few weeks."
Ethan’s eyes widened. "Why wait?"
"It’s an annual thing..." Viktor explained. "Mafia’s trade cities. We hit theirs, they hit ours. Free the omegas. Take their territory. Blablabla. It’s not something an ordinary man like you should understand,"
Ethan shook his head as he continued.
"You should be careful. There’s a dominant omega running it. He controls them with the tattoos."
Viktor’s jaw tightened. "We’ll grab him too."
Ethan stared at his hands. The bartender’s face flashed... his ponytail, sharp eyes.
Viktor clapped once, loudly.
"Now, enough of the boring discussion. Please, bring Elias down. I’ll leave after I see him."
Ethan scratched his head.
"He’s... not here."
Viktor froze. "What?"
"You’ll find out sooner or later so I’ll let you know. My mom... sent him away. He moved."
Viktor’s face went blank. Then dark.
"Where?"
"I don’t know," Ethan said. "He left last night. With Lila."
Luka sat up. "You kicked him out?"
"Not me," Ethan said quickly. "Mom."
Viktor stood slowly. "Find him. If anything happens to Elias... Your family will be in serious trouble,"
