Chapter 120: Alessandro Vito Corleone!
The private wing of the Matching Centre was quiet except for the soft beeping of monitors. Nathan was still unconscious.
Viktor and Luka had left twenty minutes ago. They had no reason to stay for more seconds anyway, especially Viktor. The last place he would want to be was here, with a Caldwell. He came here because of Elias. If he hadn’t, Elias would have followed Nathan and been with him till he opened his eyes. The thought of that made his blood boil.
The hallway still smelled faintly of antiseptic and it was empty. Only a few people were allowed into the private wing.
A heavy door opened at the far end. Mr Raymond walked in first, coat unbuttoned, silver hair perfect even at this hour. Behind him came his eldest son, Daniel Caldwell. He was tall, gentle-eyed, wearing the same tired smile he always had when business went wrong again.
Raymond didn’t knock. He didn’t have to, not when his son’s life was in danger.
He pushed open Nathan’s recovery room door and stepped inside. Nathan lay pale against white sheets, oxygen mask fogging with every slow breath.
Tubes ran into his arms. A thick bandage covered the left side of his chest.
His hair was pushed back from his forehead, making him look younger than his twenty-seven years.
Raymond stopped at the bedside and stared down at his youngest son for a long time. He was relieved to see that he was alive and well. He even checked his face to make sure nothing was wrong; otherwise, they’d have to call for a plastic surgeon.
Daniel stayed near the door, hands in his pockets. He almost didn’t want to come in. Standing there and watching his father wear a rare expression on his face was enough for him.
Raymond finally spoke. His voice was almost like a whisper.
"Look at him. It’s a relief that there wasn’t a single scratch on that pretty face. You’d never know he took a bullet."
Daniel gave a small smile.
"It’s good to see you still super concerned about your last son."
Raymond pulled the chair closer and sat. He reached out, brushed a strand of hair from Nathan’s forehead the way he used to when Nathan was five and had nightmares.
"On the phone, the doctor said he’ll be fine," Raymond murmured. "His lung will heal. In a couple of weeks, he’ll be chasing trouble again."
Daniel leaned against the wall, listening. He could imagine Nathan as that kind of person. His father suddenly turned his head to him and he flinched.
"Daniel... when’s the last time you actually saw him? Not just photos or s."
Daniel thought about it for a few seconds, tapping his finger on his arm. "Ten years? Maybe eleven. He stopped coming to family dinners when he turned seventeen. Since he said they were boring."
Raymond chuckled softly. "He wasn’t wrong. It was indeed boring."
He paused and glanced back at his eldest. "You’re not jealous, are you? That I keep saying he’ll inherit everything?"
Daniel shook his head immediately. "No. Never. It’s not like I have luck in business. I crash every business you give me. Nathan... he doesn’t even try and still ends up winning. That’s just how it works in this family."
Raymond’s mouth curved... not quite a smile.
"He’s changed, though. He took a bullet for the person who changed him. That person is indeed someone special."
Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Someone special?"
"Very," Raymond said. "The same boy who saved him the first time. Elias Kane."
Daniel’s eyes widened slightly. "Elias Kane? I have no idea who he is."
"Of course you don’t," Raymond confirmed. "This child dismissed government protection that was watching the kid, staged a whole attack just so he could play hero, and when it went wrong, he still jumped in front of the bullet meant for Elias."
Daniel let out a low whistle. "That’s... new. The disrespectful and annoying Nathan I know wouldn’t do that."
"Love does strange things to a man," Raymond said. He looked almost proud. "I like it."
The door opened again.
The lead surgeon walked in, followed by two nervous residents and Dr Patel.
Every person in the room straightened the second they saw Raymond Caldwell. After all, it was rare to see the president of the matching centre.
"Sir," the surgeon said, bowing his head. "We didn’t expect..."
Raymond waved a hand. "Relax. Pretend I’m not here. How is he really?"
The surgeon relaxed a fraction.
"He’s stable. I’m sure he would be breathing on his own soon. The person who applied pressure saved his life. Another minute or two and we’d be having a different conversation."
Raymond’s eyes sharpened. "That was Elias Kane again?"
Dr Patel stepped forward. "Yes, sir. He kept direct pressure on both entry and exit wounds for nearly fifteen minutes. Perfect technique. He knew exactly what he was doing."
Raymond let out a short and amused laugh.
"My son," he said, shaking his head, "has fallen hard. The hard that makes a man stupid. I’ve never seen him like this."
He stood up slowly.
"Dr Patel," he said, voice dropping to the tone that made entire boardrooms go silent. "You still have that file?"
Dr Patel’s face went carefully blank. "Which one, sir?"
"The one we talked about a few weeks ago. The crash information."
The surgeon and residents suddenly found the monitor very interesting. They were trying hard to pretend they weren’t listening to the information that wasn’t meant for their ears.
Daniel looked confused but stayed quiet. He wished to ask his father what information it was about but he dared not move his lips.
Dr Patel bowed his head as he clenched his fist behind him. "It’s ready, sir."
"Good," Raymond said. "Package it nicely. We’ll deliver it to Elias Kane personally. Like a Christmas present."
Daniel frowned. "Dad... what file?"
Raymond didn’t answer his son. He kept his eyes on Dr Patel.
"It’ll cause problems," he said simply. "Big ones. Between the boy and Viktor Drago. And when Elias is hurt and angry and has nowhere to turn... Nathan will be right there. Be conscious of everything happening with Elias so you’ll know the perfect time to deliver this. Understand?"
Dr Patel’s throat moved as he swallowed. "Perfectly, sir."
Raymond wore a cold and satisfied smile as he stood up.
"Excellent.. I’ll await good news."
He turned to the surgeon. "Take good care of my son. He has work to do when he wakes up."
Then he gestured to Daniel. "Let’s go. Traffic will be murder this time of night."
They left. The door closed softly behind them.
The room felt ten degrees warmer the second they were gone.
One resident let out a shaky breath. "I always forget how scary he is until he’s standing right there."
The surgeon wiped his forehead. "Just don’t make mistakes around him and you’ll live."
"But what information were they..." T
One of the residents wanted to turn to Dr Patel, but he was already gone.
.
.
Dr Patel’s office was dark except for the glow of his computer screen. He always turned off the lights just so no one would sneak in and it was the perfect way for them to know that he wasn’t in the office. He entered and locked the door behind him.
Slowly, he sat down and opened a password-protected folder.
Two files sat inside.
The first one was the one Raymond Caldwell wanted released. The information about the accident. The information about Elias’s parents and the fact that they were killed by Viktor.
That file would destroy Elias’s world the second he saw it. The relationship between him and Viktor would be ruined. Once Elias finds out that he’s falling in love with the killer of his second parents.
Dr Patel stared at it for a long time.
Then he opened the second file.
The one Raymond didn’t know about.
The one that had arrived three weeks ago from an anonymous source with Corleone family crest watermarks. He has no idea who sent it and he didn’t even try to pry.
Subject: Kane, Elias (birth name: Alessandro Vito Corleone)
Date of birth: [redacted]
Mother: Isabella Corleone (deceased)
Father: Don Matteo Corleone (deceased)
Status: Presumed deceased / Missing since age 4
Reward for safe return: No limit
Warning: Any harm to the heir will result in total annihilation
There was a baby photo attached... chubby cheeks, big brown eyes, tiny hand reaching for the camera.
The same eyes that looked out from Elias’s face now.
Dr Patel leaned back in his chair and laughed quietly to himself.
"Alessandro Vito Corleone," he whispered to the empty room. "The lost prince of the most dangerous family in the country... working as a nanny. In love-hate relationship with two men who would both kill to keep him."
He closed the file and locked it again.
Suddenly, he stood up and looked out the window at the city lights.
"I give it a month," he said to the night. "Maybe less. Before everything burns."
He smiled, small and tired.
"I hope I live long enough to watch."
