Chapter 147: Not Permitted To See Elias!
Nathan slammed the car door with a resounding thud, the echo bouncing off the surrounding empty spaces outside the modest chicken restaurant, located on the outskirts of the city.
The place was unremarkable with a brightly neon-lit storefront and an oversized sign boasting crispy fried chicken, wings, and hearty sides. It’s the sort of late-night haven for weary travellers or those seeking quick comfort food. He leaned heavily against the cool metal of the car, fishing a cigarette from his pocket and lighting it with a sharp flick of his lighter. The flame briefly illuminated his tense features before he inhaled deeply, the smoke swirling upward into the cool air as he tried to temper the frustration simmering just beneath his skin.
He’d been aimlessly cruising the streets for hours, pursuing every faint lead on Elias’s location. That final message he’d sent got no response. Well, he wasn’t surprised as it was loaded with threats to expose the long-buried truth about his parents’ murderer but Elias didn’t reply. He had chosen to remain silent. No texts, no calls, no sign of life. It was unravelling him. Elias belonged to him. Everything about Elias belonged to him. Elias was his to shield, his to claim entirely... and the mere thought of Elias sequestered away, likely under the watchful eye of that bastard Drago, sent a surge of possessive rage through Nathan’s veins. He gripped a handful of his own hair, pulling sharply in frustration.
"Where the hell are you, Elias?" he muttered through gritted teeth, his voice low and edged with desperation.
Leo remained at a respectful distance, hands clasped formally behind his back, observing in silence. He had grown accustomed to these volatile shifts in Nathan’s demeanour whenever Elias was involved... they followed a familiar, troubling pattern. After a pregnant pause, Leo cleared his throat softly.
"Sir, if I may ask... why did we stop here, of all places? A chicken restaurant?"
Nathan jabbed a finger toward the glowing building, the cigarette dangling from his lips. "Get me some chicken. The spicy kind... with fries."
Leo inclined his head without hesitation.
"Yes, sir." He turned and strode inside briskly, leaving Nathan to stew in solitude.
Nathan drew another long drag, holding the smoke in his lungs before exhaling slowly, watching it dissipate. The nicotine dulled the edge slightly, but it wasn’t nearly enough to quell the storm inside.
His gaze wandered idly across the sparsely occupied parking lot, landing on a sleek car easing into a spot several spaces away. Two men emerged from the car. They weren’t both tall and impeccably dressed, one with dark hair and a strikingly familiar profile. Nathan narrowed his eyes, straining to recall where he’d seen that face before. They conversed casually as they approached the restaurant entrance, their voices carrying snippets about meal choices.
Then recognition struck like a bolt... the man with the chiselled jaw and assured stride. Jace Voss. The very same intruder who’d appeared at the hospital, probing about Elias as if he held some personal stake. A slow, predatory grin spread across Nathan’s face. He flicked the cigarette to the asphalt, grinding it out beneath his heel, and slipped inside after them, silently.
The interior was warm and inviting, and at the same time, it was thick with the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling oil and seasoned chicken. Bright lights illuminated the counters adorned with colourful menus, a scattering of tables occupied by late-night diners and families, and a modest line forming at the register.
Jace and his companion, who was Ethan, Jace’s older brother, whom Nathan remembered from a hasty background check, stood before the overhead menu board, engrossed in a lighthearted debate.
"I think Elias would like the spicy wings," Jace said, gesturing upward with confidence. "I know how well he handles heat so it should be a piece of cake for him, right?"
Ethan laughed softly, as he folded his hands and took a quick glance at his brother.
"You sure do know a lot about Elias after spending a short time with him."
"Is it obvious?" Elias asked as he handed the marked menu to the lady behind the counter. "But I don’t know if he’d want to see me. I’ve been avoiding him before we took a break from school and now, it feels so weird that I’m the one going to him after being such a dick."
"Whoa. Woah. Hold on there. Elias is a nice person. I’m sure he’ll be nice enough to want to speak to you."
Nathan halted just behind them, close enough to catch every word without drawing attention. Elias. They were discussing Elias intimately, as if they shared secrets with him. His grin sharpened into something feral. Jackpot.
He had wanted to grab Jace from behind and bang his head on the counter to ask if he knew where Elias could be but he already got what he wanted without violence.
He retreated quietly, melting back into the shadows and exiting before they could turn and notice his presence. Returning to the car, he slid into the spacious backseat just as Leo emerged from the restaurant, carrying a steaming paper bag. "Here, sir....spicy chicken and fries, as requested."
Nathan accepted it absently, placing the bag on the seat beside him untouched. "Wait. Don’t move yet."
Leo ignited the engine but held off accelerating when Nathan raised a commanding hand.
"What is it, sir?"
Nathan’s eyes remained fixed on the restaurant doors. Moments later, Jace and Ethan exited, bags in hand, making their way back to their vehicle. "Follow those two and don’t lose them. If you do..." The threat hung unfinished in the air, heavy with unspoken consequences.
Leo swallowed visibly, his grip tightening on the wheel as he nodded.
"Understood." He allowed their car to pull out first, then tailed it at a cautious distance, blending
into the traffic.
After several minutes of tense silence on winding roads, Leo risked a glance in the rearview mirror. "Sir, why are we following them?"
"Why are we following them, you ask?" Nathan tore into a piece of chicken, savouring the heat as he smirked. "Those two will lead me to the one I’ve been looking for. They will lead me to Elias."
Leo gave a subtle shake of his head but said nothing more, his attention locked on maintaining the pursuit. He’d rather not lose them and get yelled at by Nathan.
Half an hour later, they arrived at a fortified gated community on the city’s outskirts. It has imposing high walls topped with security measures, armed guards stationed at the entrance. Leo eased the car to a discreet stop along the roadside as Ethan’s vehicle underwent a thorough inspection.
"That bastard Drago. What the hell is he protecting? Elias or himself?" He groaned in frustration.
"Are we following them inside also?"
"Ha! Do you think it’s possible?" Nathan answered almost in a whispering voice as he watched the heavy gates swing open, admitting the Voss brothers onto a lengthy, tree-lined driveway that concealed the property deep within.
Nathan leaned forward eagerly, committing every detail to memory.
"I’ve found your safe house Viktor, my friend. Good work, me. Good work," he murmured to himself with quiet triumph, a spark of satisfaction igniting in his eyes. The security appeared formidable, but it was far from insurmountable for someone like him. "Keep this spot noted, Leo. I’ll be back soon."
They pulled away smoothly, Nathan’s thoughts already churning with intricate schemes of how to burst in and see his Elias.
.
Meanwhile, Ethan and Jace pulled up to the secluded safe house. Ethan eyed his brother fondly as Jace cradled the chicken bag protectively. "You really think Elias will like that?"
Jace nodded with quiet certainty.
"Well, I hope so. As long as I’m able to have a little discussion with him, I’m contented with that."
They approached the reinforced door and pressed the intercom. A crisp female voice responded... Vera’s. "Who is it?"
"Ah! Hello, I’m Ethan Voss. Viktor asked me to come."
The door clicked open after a brief pause. Vera appeared, her expression neutral but welcoming. "You must be my brother’s guests. Come in. I’ll get my brother."
Jace shivered involuntarily as they stepped inside the warmly lit foyer. Ethan noticed immediately. "Huh? Are you cold?"
Jace shook his head, a flicker of unease crossing his features.
"I’m just scared of Viktor. I keep wondering if he would let me see Elias?"
Ethan offered a reassuring smile, clapping a hand on his shoulder.
"What do you mean? Viktor’s nice that he even wants to help me save those kidnapped omegas. I’m sure he’ll say yes."
"I hope so too." Jace smiled.
However, things were different minutes later, as they waited in the entryway, Viktor emerged from a side hallway, his presence commanding and unyielding.
After a quick greeting between Viktor and Ethan, Viktor’s gaze settled on Jace.
"I didn’t know you’d be bringing extra people."
"Oh. I apologise for not informing you. He came because he needed something."
"Something?" Viktor raised a brow.
"I’d like to see Elias. I promise, I won’t stay more than thirty minutes with him..."
"No," Viktor answered with a cool finality. "You’re not permitted to see Elias."
