Chapter 154: For Everyone’s Safety!
The next morning, Viktor was wearing a loose robe when he escorted Ethan and Jace to the door. The safe house was quiet, the early light filtering through the windows, casting long shadows in the hallway. Birds chirped outside, and the air carried the fresh scent of dew on the grass.
Viktor had woken early, as always, to prepare for the day ahead... the war demands starting full force, with meetings, strategies, and risks piling up. It was also the day he joined his men after spending some time at home. He walked with them to the front entrance, his robe tied loosely, the fabric soft against his skin. He gave instructions to Ethan.
"We’ll meet at the spot I mentioned yesterday. Three o’clock sharp. Bring the maps we discussed last night. No delays, Ethan. We can’t afford mistakes before we commence."
Ethan nodded, adjusting his jacket as he stepped onto the porch.
"Got it. I’ll be there with everything ready. Don’t worry."
Jace was at the back, his hands in his pockets, looking around the hallway one last time with a quiet hope. The house felt peaceful in the morning and he wondered how he would see Elias before leaving. All he wanted was to say goodbye properly, maybe get a quick word or even a hug. But there was no sign of Elias anywhere. Jace’s chest tightened with disappointment. He wanted to ask Viktor if he could see him, just for a minute, but after yesterday... Viktor only allowed thirty minutes, and the clear tension... he held back, not wanting to push and risk another rejection.
Ethan saw Jace looking around, lingering by the door, and pulled him gently by the arm.
"Come on, Jace. We’re leaving. Let’s head to the car."
Viktor waved at them casually as they stepped out fully, the door opening to the cool morning air that carried a hint of frost. "Safe drive. See you later, Ethan."
But Jace stopped suddenly on the porch, turning back with a hesitant expression. "Wait... is Elias okay? I didn’t see him this morning. Just wanted to check."
Viktor frowned immediately, his expression darkening like a cloud passing over. He didn’t like the sound of Elias’s name coming from Jace’s mouth... as it belonged there, familiar and concerned. It irritated him more than he expected, a possessive edge sharpening.
He slightly lifted his hands, letting the robe slide open a bit at the chest on purpose, exposing the marks Elias had left last night. The red bites and sucks on his neck and collarbone, fresh and clear in the light. Viktor leaned closer to Jace, making sure he saw them clearly, and grinned with a hint of triumph. "Elias is superrrr fine. He’s just tired after a hectic night."
Jace’s jaw tightened instantly, his face paling as he stared at the marks. The implication hit hard... Elias and Viktor, together, are intimate enough for those kinds of traces. His stomach twisted with jealousy and hurt, the image burning in his mind like acid.
He felt his throat close up, words failing for a second. He forced a nod, his voice tight.
"Send my regards to him." He turned quickly, following Ethan to the car without another word, his steps heavy with fatigue.
As soon as they got into the car, Ethan sighed, starting the engine and pulling away from the safe house. The gravel crunched under the tyres as they drove down the long path.
"Jace, you need to find someone new. Seriously. Maybe that would help you forget Elias. Holding on like this... It’s not healthy. You’re hurting yourself."
Jace looked out the window, the safe house shrinking in the mirror, trees blurring past. His reflection in the glass looked pale, eyes distant. The ache in his chest grew, sharp and unrelenting. He didn’t say a word, just watched the road, lost in thought.
.
.
Viktor, on the other hand, smirked to himself for sending Jace away with that little show. The kid’s face had been priceless. He turned around, closing the door with a soft click, and saw Vera standing behind him in the hallway, arms folded across her chest, one eyebrow raised high. She had caught the whole exchange from the shadows, and her eyes narrowed as she spotted the marks too.
"You’re so shameless," she said, shaking her head with a mix of disgust and amusement. "You did that on purpose, didn’t you?"
Viktor shrugged, tying his robe tighter with a casual tug.
"Had to do it. The kid needed the message loud and clear so he could stay off what belongs to me."
Vera shook her head again, turning to head toward the kitchen for coffee. "You’re impossible. Poor guy looked like you punched him."
Viktor followed her, his footsteps light on the floor. "Why are you up so early? Couldn’t sleep after editing all night?"
She poured herself a glass of water from the fridge first, taking a long sip before answering. "It’s because I’ve been getting a lot of messages from different channels... all asking for collabs. The video blew up overnight and views are climbing fast."
Viktor leaned on the counter, crossing his arms. "That’s good news. Congratulations... the family cooking thing must’ve hit the spot."
Vera nodded, setting the glass down with a clink. "It’s good news, yeah. Subscribers love everything about it... the twins being cute, Lila helping, Elias tasting everything. But they’re asking for more with Elias, the twins, and Lila specifically. The family vibe is what they’re after... ’adorable chaos’ or whatever they call it."
Viktor smirked, pouring himself coffee from the pot that was still warm. "That’s bad news then. From today, no one in or out except Marco Corleone—he has permission to visit. I’m doing this for the kids’ protection, and everyone’s safety. I don’t want any risk."
Vera nodded, understanding completely as she grabbed a mug for herself.
"I’m aware. That’s why I stayed up all night accepting some that sounded safe, declining the sketchy ones, and rescheduling the rest. We can do them after the war ends.. when things calm down."
Viktor agreed, taking a sip of his coffee. "Smart move. Keep it that way... no exceptions."
He paused for a moment, his expression turning more serious as he set the mug down. "And keep an eye on Elias too. Make sure he’s okay."
Vera turned, mug in hand, tilting her head curiously. "Why Elias specifically? Are you more worried about him than your own kids? The twins are the ones who get into everything."
Viktor shook his head, glancing toward the hallway to make sure no one was listening. "It’s not that. It’s Camilla. She’s going to visit soon before moving in."
Vera gave an "ohhh" look, understanding immediately as her eyes widened a bit.
"Ah, got it. The ex thing. Sure. I’ll make sure Elias doesn’t find out about it... or bump into her."
Viktor nodded gratefully. "Thanks. The last thing I need is drama on top of the war but making sure Elias doesn’t find out is more important."
That’s when Elias walked in, yawning widely, still in his pyjamas with messy hair from sleep and barefoot on the cool floor. He rubbed his eyes, looking a bit groggy. "Huh? Find out about what?"
Viktor and Vera turned to him quickly, freezing for a second like they’d been caught. They exchanged glances, Vera’s eyes widening slightly in panic. Vera immediately made something up, her voice a bit higher than usual.
"Uh... about the video going viral. We were just saying not to tell you yet... wanted it to be a surprise how big it’s getting."
Viktor agreed quickly, nodding with forced enthusiasm. "Yeah, exactly. Big surprise... views are through the roof. Wow!"
Elias looked between them for a long moment, his expression neutral as he poured himself coffee. But inside, he didn’t believe a word. The way they froze, the glances, the slight panic in Vera’s voice... it was obvious they were hiding something. But he didn’t show it on his face, just smiled casually as he added sugar to his mug.
"Cool. Can’t wait to see it then." He thought to himself that if he could, he would find out what they were really hiding... maybe check Vera’s phone later or listen in.
His eyes slid down Viktor’s open robe unintentionally as Viktor reached for something on the counter, catching the marks on his chest... the bites and sucks from last night, red and fresh. Elias remembered bits of it... the drinking, the heat urge kicking in early, the mess he’d made. Heat rose to his cheeks, embarrassment mixing with the foggy memory. He pressed his lips together, whispering quickly, "I’m sorry," before turning to the fridge for milk, avoiding eye contact.
Viktor caught the whisper, his frown softening a touch, but he didn’t say anything in front of Vera.
As soon as Elias left the kitchen with his coffee, heading back upstairs, Vera heaved a breath of relief, hand on her chest. "That was close. He didn’t buy it, did he?"
Viktor shook his head, rubbing his neck where one of the marks itched a bit.
"Probably not. I can’t imagine what would happen if Elias finds out I’m bringing a woman home. I have to find a way to tell him before he hears it from someone else... or walks in on it."
Vera sipped her water. "Good luck with that. He’s smart... he’ll figure it out if you’re not careful."
