Chapter 394: Chapter 393, Seriously Injured? You Think I’m Stupid_1
Lian Hongliang’s expression was grim, his hands clenched into fists.
That guy really showed up,
he thought.
Dong Long Manor was also a small town. Many Wanderers resided there, and upon hearing the declaration, they all emerged from their homes, looking up at the dark figure on the town wall.
"Is that the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, who killed the Life Alliance Elder Xie An?"
"It must be him, the one who killed Xie An. Why has he come to Dong Long Manor?"
"Have you noticed that the people he challenges always seem to be from the Life Alliance? Xie An was an Elder of the Life Alliance, and Lian Hongliang is also an Elder. Could it be a grudge?"
"Nonsense, even a fool can see that the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten has a vendetta against the Life Alliance."
"What’s so strange about holding a grudge? The Life Alliance has been aggressively recruiting lately; their numbers can rival those of the Five Alliances."
"Still, the Life Alliance can’t compare to the Five Alliances. They don’t have many experts, especially not above the sixth-stage. There are only about a dozen or so."
"I wonder if Lian Hongliang will accept the challenge?"
"We’ll just have to wait and see!"
Wanderers typically just sat back and watched, never interfering in such affairs. When someone openly challenged another, it was a one-on-one duel; interference would make one a mortal enemy. Wanderers loved a spectacle, especially a contest between warriors.
Jiang Chen, wearing a bamboo hat to conceal his face, saw that Lian Hongliang was slow to emerge and continued, "Lian Hongliang, if you don’t dare to come out and fight, then kneel, kowtow three times, and shout ’Grandpa Dong Fang, I concede!’ three times. Do that, and I’ll let you go."
People nearby burst into laughter. Could Lian Hongliang truly endure such humiliating words? This was a public disgrace! One could lack anything but dignity, especially in the Wanderer World, where it was paramount, valued even above life itself. One had to die with dignity.
As expected, Lian Hongliang clenched his fists, veins bulging on his forehead. He was clearly enraged to the extreme, unable to tolerate such provocation and humiliation.
If I back down now, how can I continue as an Elder? How could I manage my subordinates? I can lose my life, but not my dignity!
Lian Hongliang roared, "The unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, curb your arrogance! Today, I will take your life!" He then rushed out, a shining Nine Foot long Sword in hand, followed by a group of his disciples. Like their master, they too wielded Nine Foot long Swords, clearly his apprentices, emerging to shout their support.
Jiang Chen turned his head to see dozens of people rushing out of the building. He smiled. "I thought you’d hide inside and not come out. Kneel, kowtow three times, and loudly shout ’Grandpa Dong Fang, I concede!’ three times, and I’ll spare you."
"Shameless brat, curb your insolence!" one disciple shouted.
"How dare you, the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, challenge our master!" another added.
"I’ll take you on!"
"Such arrogance! Let’s all attack him together and kill him!"
Jiang Chen laughed.
These people are all bark and no bite,
he thought. They shouted about killing him, yet none charged forward, merely following quietly behind Lian Hongliang. They weren’t fools; why would they rush to their deaths? After all, this was the man who had killed Xie An, a sixth-stage powerhouse.
Lian Hongliang’s brows furrowed. "The unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, I must ask: what grudge do you hold against our Life Alliance? Why did you kill our Elder, Xie An?"
"In martial contests, life and death are decided by fate," Jiang Chen replied coolly.
"A good ’decided by fate’! Are you here this time intending to take my life?" Lian Hongliang pressed.
Jiang Chen nodded. "Yes."
Lian Hongliang was dumbstruck.
What about martial virtue? How can you admit it so bluntly? If you have grievances, say them! We can discuss it. There’s no need for fighting and killing! You’re not giving me any way to back down gracefully!
Lian Hongliang suddenly coughed, spitting out a mouthful of blood, and his posture sagged as if instantly debilitated. Several disciples immediately rushed to surround him.
"Master, are you alright?"
"Master, has your old injury flared up?"
One disciple glared at Jiang Chen. "The unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, my master is injured! If you fight him now, any victory would be dishonorable!"
Another chimed in, "The unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, if you were challenging him fairly, my master would have no fear! But now his old wounds have recurred, and he needs three months to recuperate. If you have any guts, come back in three months and challenge him then!"
A third added, "The unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten, my master is gravely injured, possessing less than a tenth of his usual strength! Even if you win, it will be a tainted victory, and you’ll be condemned by all!"
Jiang Chen was momentarily stunned.
Seriously? This actually works? With such powerful True Qi coursing through you, you’re claiming to be injured? I don’t freaking believe a word of it!
Elsewhere, Jinhua chuckled. "This fellow is exceptionally cunning, actually injuring himself. It seems he doesn’t dare to fight."
Elder Li Antai laughed. "He’s not as strong as Xie An was, so naturally, he’s afraid of Chen Jinnan. Looks like this fight isn’t going to happen."
Li Chanji smiled. "That’s not necessarily true."
Lian Hongliang panted heavily, declaring, "It doesn’t matter! Even with my body gravely injured, I will slay him!"
Just then, Jiang Chen took a sip of wine from a flask, then dramatically spat out a mouthful of dark, aged-looking blood, sighing, "To be perfectly honest, I am also gravely injured. In fact, I have less than one percent of my strength remaining."
Lian Hongliang stared, dumbfounded. His disciples were equally stupefied.
This... This is outrageous! You’re so obviously faking! Do you take us for idiots?!
they thought collectively, though none dared voice it.
The crowd of onlookers burst into laughter, quickly catching on to the charade.
"Heh heh... So, the Elder is injured and at less than a tenth of his strength, and now the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten is also injured, with less than one percent of his strength!"
"This is getting interesting!"
"That unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten must be faking it!"
"No kidding! You think Elder Lian is *actually* injured either?"
"Interesting. It seems the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten saw right through him."
"So, both are ’gravely injured.’ I guess that makes them even!"
Lian Hongliang was shaking with suppressed rage.
Damn it! This guy is utterly shameless! I claim to be gravely injured with less than a tenth of my strength, and he counters by being even *more* gravely injured, with less than one percent! Am I supposed to feel like I got the better end of that exchange?!
Jiang Chen continued, "Since we’re both so seriously injured, why wait three months? Let’s fight now. Of course, if you’d rather kneel and kowtow, I’ll consider the matter settled."
"Even if I am severely injured, I will take your life!" Lian Hongliang declared, dropping all pretense.
Jiang Chen chuckled inwardly.
Alright, if you’re done pretending, then so am I. You think you’re shameless for faking an injury? I can be even more brazen! Trying to play these games with me? You’re still far too inexperienced...
Lian Hongliang strode towards the outskirts of the town. Jiang Chen, in turn, leaped down from the town wall, nearly stumbling as he landed.
The onlookers watched Jiang Chen’s landing, a new wave of puzzlement rippling through them.
"Could he actually be severely injured?"
"That landing looked awkward. He almost fell."
"Maybe the unbeatable Dong Fang Unbeaten was telling the truth after all. Judging by that jump, he might really be injured, unable to even gather his True Qi."
"Or he could still be faking it, making it look convincing."
"No, impossible. That looked like an instinctive reaction, definitely not faked."
Jiang Chen was inwardly speechless.
Damn it... It was only a three-meter wall, and I nearly face-planted.
Jiang Chen was not a Wanderer; he didn’t possess their Qinggong or their True Qi. When he jumped from a height, he relied purely on instinct to land. Wanderers, however, used their True Qi and Qinggong to ensure a smooth, safe landing. That was the crucial difference.
The onlookers, observing Jiang Chen’s clumsy landing, increasingly speculated that he truly was injured. For a Wanderer, a three-meter-high town wall was a trivial obstacle. They certainly wouldn’t bungle the landing like Jiang Chen, who had almost ended up kissing a stone.
