Chapter 673: Break or No Break
The more Xiaoyun thought about it, the more he started to realize the plan might actually be plausible.
Having a small team to repair the railroad in advance and then sending troops and supplies effortlessly to another city sounds almost perfect.
It almost reminded him of a certain repair plan that a man told him a few days ago with airdropping soldiers.
However, there was one clear drawback to the whole idea.
He didn’t have enough soldiers to clear more cities. All of them already have their own duties and areas assigned to clear.
"Maybe in the future..." Xiaoyun thought to himself as he closed the , resuming his drafts for the transportation order.
---
As Xiaoyun went through most of the s on the desk, Yuqi was still on the same at the start.
"You still working on it?"
Xiaoyun curiously asked as he got up from his seat, opening the door and getting ready to leave for lunch break.
"Yeah. Just give me one minute... I need to write this guideline before I can pass this over to Jianlin to carry out."
Watching her come up with the last few words to type on her computer, the printer soon started running as it began printing out a document.
"Jianlin! Can you come over and carry this out?" Yuqi yelled as she took the paper out of the printer from behind.
"Yes, boss!"
"Okay, now we can go eat."
As Yuqi got up and grabbed onto Xiaoyun’s arm, he couldn’t help but feel a little bad for Jianlin as she ran into the room to get the paper before leaving.
"She doesn’t need to go eat?" Xiaoyun curiously asked as the two of them exited her main office.
"You don’t need to worry about Jianlin. She’ll just have her lunch break later... Where do you want to go eat today?"
Yuqi asked as the two of them entered the elevator, pressing the ground floor button as it began to move.
"Um... I don’t know. What do you want to eat?" Xiaoyun questioned back.
"How about a burger? I feel like I haven’t eaten fast food for so long." Yuqi murmured as her mouth started drooling a little.
"Let’s go check it out then."
---
After the short breakfast, Xiaoyun and Yuqi went their separate ways as he headed towards the logistics office to meet up with Houqin.
"Come in."
As he opened the door, Houqin was still eating her food out of a plastic tray, her eyes busily looking at some paper.
"Looks like there’s a lot of work today, huh?"
"G-Good——Ahem ahem."
"Calm down. Finish your food before you talk to me... No need to rush it."
Xiaoyun took a seat in front of her as she quickly finished up her food, putting the plastic tray aside as she wiped her mouth with a tissue.
"Commander, I had been waiting for you. The salvage in Dongguan just came out from Yiming today."
"How many did they manage to recover?"
"All of the tanks were transported out safely. And they managed to clear the last remaining bit of Dongguan as well."
"Thank god... Wait, you said they cleared Dongguan?"
Xiaoyun asked again, his ear unable to believe the bombshell news that Houqin had just dropped.
"They cleared Dongguan. But only the city itself, though. None of the rural areas in the whole administrative zone."
"Finally, some good news... Why is your face still so tense? Is there something else that went wrong?"
"None of the salvage tanks are operational.... It’s going to cost a lot to find the right parts and pay for the repair."
"That’s fine. The tank being salvaged is a better outcome than I had expected anyway... Have Yiming and Lingang gotten into their position at Zhongshan and Jiangmen?"
"Um, Commander, you mean Han Bang? Lingang is at Dongguan and Shenzhen right now."
"Oh, right, sorry about that. I mixed them up... So, have they begun setting up for retaking those two cities yet?"
"They are currently sending in scouting missions. And they had already repulsed the zombie horde that had gathered in the south."
"That’s good. Tell them to take their time. We’re in no rush to take these two cities over. Make sure they get everything they need."
Houqin nodded as she noted it down in her small notebook, leaving Xiaoyun a little curious as he noticed the piles of s on her desk.
"Is that all you have to for today?"
"Um... There is one more . Yezi had sent back his July of Zhaoqing. You might want to have a read of it."
As she handed him a piece of paper in between the piles of files, Xiaoyun opened it before reading it.
Inside, the information was mostly things he already knew, like how Zhaoqing had been cleared, and the last few bits of the rural countryside were underway.
The only thing new was the regard for Guangxi, more specifically, how zombies were heading over to the neighboring province rather than staying put.
It was almost as if the zombies knew they were too strong, so they fled in advance to avoid the need to fight them.
However, the timeline wouldn’t add up, as the fleeing happened right at the start of the outbreak, way before their settlement cleared Guangzhou city.
"Huh... Weird."
Xiaoyun didn’t think too much about it, as there wasn’t much to do other than to tell Yezi to be more cautious.
"Anything else I need to catch up on?"
"No, that’s it. Nothing else worth ing." Houqin murmured as she started typing something on the computer.
"Great. What’s all this paper on your desk for then?" Xiaoyun curiously asked as he looked towards the big stack of papers.
"Just inventory changes from last month, since it’s August now. Most of them are pretty trivial items."
"I see... Then if there’s nothing else that I need to catch up on, I’m going to head back home early today."
"Wait, Commander, can I ask you about something personal?"
"Sure. What is it?"
Xiaoyun suddenly started having a bad feeling as he could notice the nervousness on her face, the same one that he had seen on his wives before.
"My, um... A friend of mine was able to contact me a few days ago. T-They were friends with me before the outbreak."
"Mhm. Did they ask you to get an autograph from me?"
"N-No, n-not that. She happened to find my parents in Changsha before coming over here.
So Commander, I-I was wondering if I can take a few days off to go to Changsha to meet my parent."
Xiaoyun sat in silence as his mind ran through various kinds of thoughts, only to come up with a singular answer.
"I’m afraid I can’t grant you the break."
"Thank you——Wait, what?"
Houqin was a little stunned as she didn’t expect Xiaoyun to reject her request. She had never taken a day off since getting this job.
"Your job is too important. I can’t afford to lose you... Who knows if something bad happens while you’re on your trip to Changsha?"
"B-But my parents..."
Seeing Houqin looking a little torn, Xiaoyun suggested a counteroffer that instantly changed the frown on her face.
"Why don’t you just send a small team to bring your parents over? Then you can see them every day instead."
"You’re right, Commander. Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll go——"
"You can go after you finish this work first. Let’s not forget the country comes first before personal affairs."
"Yes, sir!"
As Houqin happily returned to her work, Xiaoyun felt a little accomplished as he avoided a potential disaster with logistics.
"Oh, I almost forgot. Get ready to draft a plan for the 6th Army Corps... We’re going to reach around a million soldiers by the end of the year."
Xiaoyun could see the smile instantly wiped off from Houqin’s face, but she still said ’Yes, sir’ with all the remaining energy she had left.
---
Just as he exited the logistics office, Xiaoyun was a little surprised to see Tianci calling him over the phone out of all phones.
"Xiaoyun, can you come to my office for a second? I need to share something with you."
"Sure."
As he hung up the phone, Xiaoyun quickly hopped into his car, driving out of the logistics’ parking lot before driving down the road.
After driving for a few minutes, he finally arrived at a pawn shop.
"What do you like to sell, sir?" A store worker asked, welcoming Xiaoyun in as he looked around the store.
"I’d like to go inside the lab. Tianci called me to come here."
The store worker looked over to the security guard by the door, who instantly understood the message as he pulled the store blinds over.
"Follow me."
Following the store worker, Xiaoyun soon finds himself walking down a strange entrance way that looks nothing like the last time.
There were no metal doors, only a long hallway with cameras and mysterious dark holes on the ceiling that seemed to be blocked off.
"You guys really renovated this place, huh?"
Xiaoyun commented as the two of them finally reached the end of the hallway, which finally had the familiar-looking metal door that required an ID key.
