Chapter 710

Chapter 710: Giant Mutants
When Xiaoyun stepped inside Houqin’s office the next day, his face looked beyond exhausted with dark circles around his eyes.
"Morning, Houqin."
"Morning, commander... You okay, commander?"
"I’m fine... Is there anything that you need me to know about?" Xiaoyun asked as he let out a small yawn after sitting down across from her.
"Nothing so far... Oh, I just got a message."
As Houqin started clicking through her computer, her face grew increasingly concerned as she scrolled down her mouse.
"Is there something wrong?"
"Commander, I got good news and bad news... Which one do you want to hear first?" Houqin asked back.
"Good news first."
"One of Yezi’s divisions stationed in Zhaoqing just repealed an attack from a mutant that they had never heard of before..."
"A mutant never seen before?" Xiaoyun questioned in confusion.
"I shouldn’t use the word heard. It’s on the record, but no one had actually witnessed it on actual ground."
"Stop beating around the bush and just say what kind of mutant——"
As Houqin turned her monitor around, Xiaoyun froze in place. It was a giant zombie. No, a mutant that matched the same height as a skyscraper.
The same zombie he once witnessed in Foshan with Kate, finally captured in actual pictures.
"They managed to repeal it?" Xiaoyun questioned, his eyes unable to believe something like this was taken care of by a single division.
"In the email, they said they used all of their explosives and used the DF-11 that we transferred over to Yezi to damage the mutant."
"Damage... Not even killed?"
The thought of those ballistic missiles not even killing the mutant shocked him. He still could remember the damage when Zhongxiong’s army used them in Changsha.
"I’m afraid so... They only stated repeal. Not killed." Houqin answered as her face looked a little grim.
"Shit. Wait a moment, this isn’t the bad news?"
"In the email, they also stated that there are more of them... They had drone footage that is being delivered by this evening."
"You can’t be serious..."
Staring at the giant mutant on the screen, he couldn’t mutter a single word. He just couldn’t imagine the damage if more of these giant mutants attacked at once.
His mind was already thinking of packing his bags and sailing to the high seas, or hiding in the bunkers in case the mutant charged straight towards Luoping.
"Ahem, is there anything else they had sent us in the email?" Xiaoyun asked, shaking his head a little to kick off all the negative thoughts.
"No, sir. That’s all the information the resupply caravan was able to send back at once... We should get more information by the evening."
Hearing her repeated answer, Xiaoyun’s heart was not calmed down at all. But his face had to remain calm as he looked over to the army map.
"Does Yezi know about this?"
"He is already pulling his entire army back from Yanfu to Zhaoqing. He should have gotten the same information as us an hour ago."
As Xiaoyun thought of what to do, his eyes turned towards the south. There was one man who he was certain would have a solution.
"Recall Yiming from Zhongshan and Jiangmen. I need him to come back by the evening to discuss what to do next."
"Yes, sir!"
---
As the logistic office kicked itself into full gear, Xiaoyun was out of there as he arrived in the adminstrative building.
"Morning, boss!"
"Morning."
After taking the elevator and walking through a few cubicles, he soon arrived in Yuqi’s main office.
"Took you long enough."
Yuqi murmured as the clock was almost pointing at twelve o’clock already, when he usually comes here an hour earlier.
"Just had some stuff coming up... Hey Yuqi, the cabinet idea might need to be delayed. I’m going to be busy for the next few days."
"Busy? What are you busy with? Is there some bad news from Houqin?" Yuqi guessed as she could see the grim look on his face.
"Do you remember the giant mutant rumor that the newspaper ed a few days ago in Guangxi?"
"Yeah. What about them?" Yuqi asked again, her face still seemingly careless about what was about to drop.
"They attacked one of the divisions stationed in Zhaoqing."
The second Xiaoyun answered, she finally looked away from her computer. Her head turned over to stare at him in silence.
"You... serious?"
Seeing the look on his face, it became clear to Yuqi that it was not a joke. The rumor of the giant mutant was true all along.
"D-Did the army manage to fight it off?"
Yuqi nervously asked as she looked genuinely scared, her eyes more scared than ever before.
"For now. They are fought off. But things could get a lot worse. I need you to get ready to mobilize all resources for this."
For once, she didn’t argue back against Xiaoyun. She only nodded in agreement as the fear disappeared from her eyes.
"I’ll go make the calls. Is there anything else I can do?"
"Make sure none of the media panics. The last thing we want is for the citizens to freak out."
Yuqi once again nodded her head, noting it down as she looked over to Xiaoyun for the next command from him.
"And make sure Yueyue gets the order to crack down on any rumors... Make sure it’s not too obvious that it might backfire."
Despite getting an ambiguous answer, Yuqi didn’t question it once again as she noted it down in her notebook.
"Anyway else?"
"That’s it... Make sure this conversation doesn’t get out. Just say to the workers that it’s a scheduled emergency practice."
"Okay..."
---
As the noon quickly flew by, Xiaoyun was back at Houqin’s office as the resupply caravan that had headed to Zhaoqing finally arrived back at the base.
He was sitting right in the middle of the desk where Houqin usually sits, with Houqin and Yiming standing on either side.
"Commander, these are five soldiers the division commander sent back to the news in detail."
Xiaoyun nodded, signalling her to continue as she looked over to the head of the five-person group.
"Zhangbei, can you introduce the situation on the front line?" Houqin ordered out loud.
"Yes, sir!"
As one of the more senior soldiers stepped up, he quickly took out his backpack before putting a laptop on the desk.
"The front line situation right now is stable. The invading mutant was repealed, and the damage we had done should be severe enough to most likely kill it."
"Should be?"
Both Xiaoyun and Yiming were a little surprised, as it didn’t match up with the initial email info they had gotten.
"The initial we had was that the giant mutant ran away from the battlefield with a massive wound around its head.
But after conducting a scouting flight with a drone, we found it to be lying on the floor just twenty km away in the woods."
"Show me the footage then."
Zhangbei quickly opened the laptop, entering the password before a video was put on display for the three of them.
The first few second was the drone flying up to the sky, heading out from some small towns as it flew towards the woods.
It was just endless and endless woods, with every few patches of trees crushed onto the dirt below until a road showed up.
As the drone started following the road, a warning label popped up in the corner, indicating the battery was starting to run low.
"Is this sped up?" Yiming curiously asked as he quickly realized how fast the drone was flying by.
"Yes, sir."
After what felt like flying forever, the drone finally sees something different. A mutant lying fully on the ground, faced down.
They could all see the visible wound, from what seemed to be explosive marks to small bullet holes all over its body.
More importantly, it had an open wound right on the back of its head, still bleeding out as it remained there, lifeless.
"That thing definitely looks dead."
Yiming murmured as the drone’s battery reached a critical point, automatically descending as it landed into some trees before blacking out.
"The radio message we received halfway also stated that we sent a small team to check, and they said the mutant was confirmed dead."
"Whew..."
Xiaoyun finally let out a sigh of relief as it wasn’t all bad news. But there were still a lot of things to be desired with the outcome.
"This is the drone footage of the mutant that attacked. How about the information about the existence of multiple giant mutants?"
As soon as he asked the question, he could notice the four soldiers in the back breathing heavily as if they were a little nervous.
It wasn’t fear in their eyes, which surprised Xiaoyun a little as Zhangbei pulled up another video on the computer.
"We couldn’t confirm exactly that there are multiple mutants. But we did find footprints that indicated there was certainly more than one."
