Chapter 718: Evacuation and No Traces
"Insure? You tell me to sleep safe at night knowing someone can coup me any time when you’re gone."
As Yuqi yelled right into Xiaoyun’s face, he remained calm. He looked back into her eyes as he spoke softly next.
"I didn’t mean to use that word. Sorry... The coup was an accident that would never be repeated."
Despite his reassurance, Yuqi didn’t buy it. Still, her rationality took over as if she realized the anger towards Xiaoyun was unjustified.
"How can I possibly know about that for sure?" Yuqi quietly questioned.
"Because I’m here."
"What if you’re busy commanding the troops in the front line again? Who’s going to be there to stop them?"
"The people and the soldiers themselves know what right and wrong... The only reason the coup was possible was that the town was just starting."
Seeing Xiaoyun unwilling to compromise or change his view, Yuqi had no other choice but to accept the status quo once again.
"Whatever. You’re the one in charge... If anything goes wrong while you’re gone, you’re going to be the one regretting it."
"I’m more than certain the army knows their scared duty. They know the importance of a civilian government." Xiaoyun affirmed.
"I really hope so."
Just as Yuqi and Xiaoyun were about to make mends, someone suddenly knocked on the door.
"Xiaoyun, you there?" Yueyue’s voice appeared from the outside.
"Yeah, I’m here. You can come in."
As the doors opened, Yueyue walked straight to the chair across from him, her hand putting down a file onto the desk.
"One of our agents from Taishan just sent critical information. You need to check this out... Yuqi?"
"What?"
"It’s fine. She can stay... You already read through this?" Xiaoyun curiously asked.
"Yeah."
Opening the file, Xiaoyun was instantly shocked by the first thing he saw. It was an outside image of the metal fence he had once entered with Kate.
The second image, right behind it, was no other than the actual inside, with more and more pictures behind it documenting every single step.
He could even reconganize several of the hallway layouts and the massive hole he had left with the explosives he had used against Kate’s ’dead’ brother.
"H-How did this person get images of this?"
"They had abandoned the lab."
Upon hearing Yueyue’s answer, Xiaoyun froze. He had never even thought of them abandoning their positioning like this with no words.
"What? When?"
"Based on the agent’s , it seems to be two or three weeks ago... They used a secret exit that we couldn’t track beforehand."
As he looked through all the different images in silence, his mind soon realized he had been played like a fiddle.
All of the potential threat was just a smokescreen. The giant mutant’s attack might even be their doing just to distract him.
Even though he couldn’t understand why they could spend so much effort, they were now gone, out of their sight.
"Do you have any traces of where they had gone?"
"None of our agents were able to find them traveling on the main roads... They might have traveled through the nearby harbor that we didn’t take into account."
"Shit."
"What are you two talking about? I’m so confused. What’s this place?" Yuqi curiously asked as she looked genuinely confused.
"It’s the lab that the secret society had been operating out of. They had abandoned it for some weird reason." Yueyue explained.
"Why didn’t we get rid of them sooner?" Yuqi questioned again.
"They’re right next to a nuclear facility."
Xiaoyun’s answer instantly made Yuqi fall into silence. Her mind seemed to have finally remembered the story that Kate and Xiaoyun had told a few months ago.
"This is the lab that you and Kate went to?"
"Yeah... Yueyue, I want your agents to search every harbor and secure the lab. They had to leave some evidence of where they had gone."
"I already sent out all of my available agents on that task."
As he looked back at the images in the file, he could vividly see all the machines that had been left behind.
It was almost as if the whole evacuation was out of some emergency. Something inside that had gone terribly wrong in the lab forced them to abandon it.
Yet, based on the agent’s ability to go in and take an image and come out of it, it was clearly not an actual threat, at least to them.
"Xiaoyun... You said this lab is in Taishan, right?" Yuqi suddenly asked.
"Yeah. It’s right next to the Nuclear power facility in Taishan... What about it?"
"I think I know why they had left. Weren’t your army going towards Jiangmen city and Zhongshan city now?"
As Xiaoyun looked over to the map he had hung on the wall, he soon realized what Yuqi was trying to imply.
"Why didn’t I think of that. No wonder they left in such a hurry. They’re scared of us trapping them."
With a clear chain of logic in his head, Xiaoyun felt much better now that his settlement was being actively viewed as a threat to the secret society.
"That’s good news, right?" Yuqi curiously asked.
"Maybe. We don’t know where they went. They can still pose danger to us... Yueyue, have your agent secured the nuclear facility yet?"
"They ed no one was inside... The only thing they said about it was that the whole thing seemed to be turned off before the outbreak."
"They’re really bluffing the whole time, huh?" Xiaoyun murmured as he began to realize once again he had been played.
"Wait, does that mean we’re the ones in charge of the nuclear power plant?" Yuqi urgently asked.
"I’m afraid so... We’re going to need some scientists to run that thing properly, though."
As soon as he mentioned the drawback, the happiness on Yuqi’s face vanished as she herself didn’t know how many nuclear expert was left since the outbreak.
"Surely there will be someone out there who knows how it works, right?" Yueyue chimed in as she looked much more optimistic.
"Hopefully... Ahem, Yueyue, have you learned about the new cabinet position that we’re creating?" Xiaoyun asked as he suddenly changed the topic.
"N-No, what’s that?"
Noticing the hint of stuttering for a millisecond and the oddly calm face, both Xiaoyun and Yuqi immediately realized something was a little off.
"Yueyue, you’re about to get a new role to watch over the military, aren’t you happy with that?" Xiaoyun asked again.
"What? You can’t be serious. I already have too many things to manage. You can’t give me more jobs to do... Yuqi, you have to stop Xiaoyun."
As Yueyue started haggling with Yuqi’s arm, Xiaoyun’s suspicion was lowered a little. But he still felt something was off.
"Stop shaking my arms. Xiaoyun, you’re being serious? You’re actually giving Yueyue the ability to oversee the military?"
"She already did a corruption investigation into the military before. I don’t see why not let her continue making sure the military is upright."
"B-But you——"
"That was just a test. Ahem, it’s almost seven o’clock already, Leyan is going to get mad for us coming home late."
Before Yuqi could voice her anger, Xiaoyun had bolted out of the room with the notebook in hand.
"Yuqi, you have to convince Xiaoyun to change his mind. I don’t want to manage more agents to deal with the military."
As Yueyue kept shaking Yuqi’s arm, she started to get a little annoyed as she wanted to catch up to Xiaoyun to question her earlier.
"Yueyue, you have to take on more responsibility as an adult... Besides, you can appoint someone to manage it for you. You are just overseeing it."
Yuqi finally managed to push Yueyue’s hand away as she ran up towards the elevator, catching Xiaoyun before the door closed.
"Oh, right. Why didn’t I think of that?"
---
"Miss, the job had been done."
"Thank you... You can go back to your position."
As Leyan hung up her phone, she slowly leaned back onto the sofa as she looked towards the Lily playing with the babies.
"Sister Leyan, who were you calling?" Lily curiously asked.
"Just a woman I ask to help me get some groceries for tomorrow... Your friends didn’t ask you to go out today?"
"They are busy working their summer job."
"I see... Hey Lily, do you want a summer job? I happened to know someone who had been looking for an assistant."
"Who is it? What kind of job is it?"
"You know this person... It’s a very simple job. You just sit in the office all day and help carry coffee to other people."
"That sounds boring. No thanks."
As Lily rejected her offer and turned her attention back to playing with the babies, Leyan didn’t try to persuade her any further.
"M-mommy! When is d-dada coming back?" Xuanhua suddenly asked as she crawled over to the sofa.
"He should be back by now... Probably just late with work. You miss Dada?" Leyan quietly asked as she lifted Xuanhua to her lap.
Xuanhua quickly nodded her head. But before Leyan could say anything else, the door suddenly rang.
"Oh, look like dada might just be home now."
