Chapter 743

Chapter 743: Leyan’s Abnormal Behavior
"Fine, fine, whatever you all say."
Despite Leyan looking saddened by the unanimous decision, no one wanted to be the one responsible for her billion-dollar idea.... except for Xiaoyun.
"Hey Leyan, look. If you scale this underground city down a little, down to like twenty people, I think this is actually fine as it is."
"Xiaoyun, don’t be ridiculous. We had already broken hundreds of underground vaults before. A Bunker is no different."
As Wuli instantly dismissed the idea, he shook his head before picking up a piece of fish meat from the plate.
"Who says we’re going to use it to block the military? It’s a shelter meant to shield you guys in case of a nuclear strike."
Xiaoyun paused for a second, then continued.
"Besides, where else do you all want to spend the money towards? Do you want to give it away to charity or something?"
This time, the whole table fell into silence. No one had any clue where to spend the insane amount of money at all.
In their mind, they already had all the luxury and things they ever wanted. There really wasn’t anything they needed to spend money on.
"If no one disagrees with it, I think you all should let Leyan go ahead with this idea."
"I’m fine with it."
"Me too."
Yueyue was the first to switch sides, followed by Nami, who seemed to have an alternative motive inside her head.
"If everyone is fine with their paycheck going towards it, I guess I’m fine as well then..." Kate quietly murmured.
Seeing no one else speaking up, Leyan was instantly overjoyed as she took it as an agreement from them.
"Thank you so much, honey!"
"Not so fast. There’s no way you’re spending half a billion by yourself. I want you to go consult more experts to see if this is actually a good idea."
"Boo..."
---
The next day flew by uneventfully, as nothing much happened other than a few minor problems over in Shaoguan that Yiming himself could deal with.
For once, there was nothing much Xiaoyun needed to do... Other than going out with a small team, including Leyan, to Luoping’s old entrance.
Since there wasn’t any road that led to the land down below the hill, they were forced to wrap around half of Luoping before going off-road.
When they finally got there, they were instantly awed by the natural beauty around the area, much more impressive than what they had seen from above.
Trees and overgrown grasses were everywhere, with a small dirt path seemingly formed over the years, if not decades, of animal walking by.
Flash of the past is what Leyan described it as. A place full of greenery, of what used to be all around their houses in Luoping before the outbreak.
The trip wasn’t just boring scenery, however. Xiaoyun and his travel group soon discovered something right below the entrance’s cliff.
Hundreds of thousands of zombie corpses were lying there. Some were still making some noises, indicating they were still alive.
Fortunately, Xiaoyun ’retrieved’ his gun from his backpack and took them out of their misery—but it also meant the project had to be put on hold.
Scouting teams were sent across the forest to look for potential zombies that had survived the drastic cliff drop.
After two days of extensive search and burning the corpses on the spot, no other zombie was found in the nearby forests.
Leyan and her team of engineers could finally resume their land survey. This time, however, Xiaoyun wasn’t there with her.
He and Yuqi had something much more important to do as the last week of August approached.
---
"Just three more days and you can enjoy your new job. Aren’t you excited?" Xiaoyun asked as the two just sat down in her office.
"Mhm. I can finally be like you and just sit back all day. Let everyone else do the work before something goes wrong."
"Hey, don’t be so pessimistic. Have some faith in your co-workers... This is something we have to do as we grow larger."
Yuqi didn’t argue back this time as she went back to work in silence, looking through the various emails, before Xiaoyun let out a small yawn.
"Anyway, why are we working over the weekend? Did you leave something we didn’t do yesterday?"
"I just want to talk to you alone about something..."
"Alone? Did we really need to come all the way to the office? Couldn’t we just talk in the backyard—"
"Xiaoyun, don’t you think Mom has been behaving a little weird lately?"
"Weird? What do you mean by that?"
"The energy on her face. The fact that she’s actively going out of the house and letting others babysit our kids at home.
It just doesn’t feel right. It’s like she’s... on drugs or something. I don’t know what exactly, but whatever it is, she’s not acting like the usual."
"Oh, come on. Can she not be a housewife for a few days? Don’t you think it is a little harsh to think of your mother like that?"
"Okay, maybe I was a little too harsh. But you tell me, a housewife wanting to build a bunker? What kind of crazy switch is that?"
Xiaoyun didn’t answer Yuqi right away. He understood her point, but he just didn’t want to dig too deep into it.
"If that’s what she wanted to do to entertain herself, then so be it... You can’t expect Leyan to be a housewife all his life.
She used to be a nurse. She has her own independent thinking. Building might be a little stretch from being a nurse, but it’s not that far-fetched.
As Yuqi stared right into Xiaoyun’s eye, he eventually backed down in the end as he awkwardly scratched his head.
"Okay, maybe it is a little bit out of character for her. But who am I to say she should stop? You try to tell her to stop what she’s doing."
"Hell no."
"Exactly. Just let her do her thing. At least having her spend the money is helping to grow the economy rather than having it rot in a bank."
Despite Xiaoyun’s reasoning, Yuqi still shook her head as she looked around the room before turning her eyes back to him.
"Xiaoyun, I don’t care about the money. It’s not what I have you over here today... I think Mom had been doing some secret stuff behind our backs."
"Secret stuff? Oh come on, when did you fall in love with conspiracy theories? She’s just in her... midlife crisis or something—"
"I have definitive evidence."
This time, Xiaoyun’s eyes instantly turned serious. He looked back into Yuqi’s eyes as he opened his lips.
"Yuqi, I just want to tell you one thing. I already know Leyan had been doing a few things in the past.
And I want to be clear. I don’t mind her doing her own thing. I’m not going to stop her just like how I’m not going to stop you from working."
"Even if she’s interfering with our work?"
"—Then again, it would be really rude for her to impede government function. What are we talking about?"
"I found the person who messes with our document. You remember how we fell into an argument a few days ago?"
"An argument... A few days ago... There are so many arguments..."
Seeing Xiaoyun unable to recall the exact moment she was talking about, Yuqi’s face started to get a little red in frustration before she clarified her answer.
"The one you questioned me about, if I added Yueyue to monitor the military, did you already forget about that?"
"Oh, that one. Didn’t I already agree to it?"
"That’s not the point. The fact is, neither of us wrote it, and someone else edited it themselves."
"Okay, so you know the person who did this. Let me see the evidence, and I’ll go my way to the arrest myself."
"I... I don’t have the evidence. Wait, wait, wait, but I know it has to be Leyan who’s behind all this."
"Mhm, am I supposed just to buy your word?"
Seeing Xiaoyun getting ready to get up and leave, Yuqi pulled out her final trump card that made him freeze in place for a second.
"Xiaoyun, you know damn well Mom had been constantly interfering with our work. Why don’t you just confront her directly?"
"She’ll never hurt me, that’s why. I trust her more than anyone in this world... If she wanted me dead, I would have died long ago."
"You... Ugh, you think you look cool saying that?" Yuqi sighed as she rolled her eyes, looking a little annoyed.
"All I’m seeing is a jealous daughter who wants more attention from her husband... Yuqi, are you jealous I went out with Leyan yesterday?"
Seeing Xiaoyun continue to act stupid, Yuqi gave up completely as she turned off her computer before getting up herself.
"Asshole."
"Hey, I’m just joking. Don’t be mad. I just don’t see the point in asking her... She’s the last person in the world that would hurt us."
