Chapter 527

Chapter 527: Chapter 310 Brother~_2
"My health has improved a lot."
"Thank you for your concern, Empress."
Lin Jinyu looked at the considerate and gentle woman before her, puzzled, and glanced in Su Bei’s direction.
Was what he said really that frightening? What a kind and gentle woman indeed!
"Ah, it’s actually nothing. I just came because I was afraid Miss Dan might misunderstand, especially after what happened with Su Bei just now..."
Dan Wulan tilted her head slightly, her white eyelashes fluttering gently, her expression one of confusion as she asked,
"Misunderstand what?"
"What happened between Queen Lin and Senior Brother?"
Lin Jinyu heaved a great sigh of relief.
So she hadn’t seen or heard anything.
Her eyes crinkling at the corners, she took Dan Wulan’s small hand and laughed.
"It’s nothing, nothing at all."
"Since that’s the case, I won’t disturb Miss Dan any longer."
With that, she turned around with a cheerful smile, shot Su Bei a harsh glare, tightened her long skirt, and adjusted the strap of her undergarment that had slipped from her shoulder due to sweat.
"Well, I wish you two an enjoyable evening..."
Su Bei’s eyes widened as he watched. He stared at Lin Jinyu’s departing figure until she completely disappeared from sight, his expression bewildered, his mind racing.
Was he overthinking it? Perhaps Lan Bao’er wasn’t angry after all. Maybe she had just stepped away to freshen up and hadn’t heard anything? But regardless, it was good that she wasn’t jealous and the misunderstanding was resolved. It saved him the time and effort of coaxing her.
Thinking this, Su Bei’s lips curled into what he considered an irresistibly charming smile. He walked cheerfully toward Dan Wulan and cleared his throat.
"Heh, Lan Bao’er, I thought you weren’t here."
"That..."
Dan Wulan turned her head slightly to look at Su Bei.
He couldn’t tell if his vision was blurry, but he thought he saw a hint of disdain at the corner of her mouth.
The warm smile, like spring flowers blooming, vanished in an instant, replaced by her usual expressionless face.
SLAM—
She shut the door heavily without looking back.
Su Bei stood alone, utterly discombobulated.
An unknown amount of time passed before he swallowed hard and muttered,
"Wasn’t Lan Bao’er not angry?"
"Hey!"
He stepped forward and began to pound forcefully on the door.
"Lan Bao’er, your husband really needs to explain! There really was nothing going on!"
"Wait... didn’t you say you didn’t see anything?"
"Please open the door!"
After knocking for a long time with no response from inside, Su Bei squatted helplessly on the ground, clutching his hair in his hands.
Just then, the door opened.
Dan Wulan looked down, peering imperiously at Su Bei, who had instinctively raised his head at the sound.
Seeing Dan Wulan, Su Bei’s face immediately broke into a wide smile.
"Lan Bao’er, you’re not angry anymore..."
Dan Wulan looked at Su Bei indifferently, then cleared her throat, making a sound that sent an instant chill down Su Bei’s spine.
"Brother~"
"What do you want with Lan Bao’er?"
The tone was strikingly similar to Lin Jinyu’s "Brother~" from earlier, if not an even more exaggerated parody.
"AHEM."
Su Bei gave an awkward smile. Watching her, he stood up and tried to take her small hand.
"Lan Bao’er, what are you doing?"
"When you speak like that, your husband gets quite uncomfortable. It’s a bit creepy."
Dan Wulan dodged Su Bei’s hand, her round eyes wide, her eyelashes fluttering as she took a step back.
"Brother~"
"Come in."
Su Bei: "..."
Su Bei walked into the room, feeling somewhat awkward. He noted the furnishings; there were no extravagant items, and everything was remarkably simple, with the faint, pleasant scent of books.
It was indeed the kind of place that could cultivate a knowledgeable and sensible woman like Li Zijun.
"Brother~ sit."
As Su Bei was surveying his surroundings, that skin-crawling voice reached him once again.
Looking up, Su Bei saw Dan Wulan had moved a potted Immortal’s cactus over. She then looked at him with wide, innocent eyes.
"Brother~ have a seat. Don’t be so formal..."
Su Bei: "..."
"Brother~ have you eaten?"
"Your little sister here has already eaten. As for what was left, I threw it out earlier. If you’re hungry, you can go pick it up and eat it yourself."
Su Bei: "..."
"Brother~ would you like to read a book?"
"Well, your little sister doesn’t have any ’Good Brother’ books here... Oh, wait, I see one! Look, how about this one? It’s called ’Please Call Me Good Brother’."
Su Bei took the book and looked closely at the title.
Good heavens, it really was called that!
Su Bei felt he needed to find a way to coax this... ’broken’ woman properly. After a moment’s thought, he took a peach blossom branch from his storage ring, gently sniffed its fragrance, and then looked at Dan Wulan with deep affection.
"Lan Bao’er, this is for you."
"This is our peach blossom."
Dan Wulan reached out a hand to take it, blinking at Su Bei, her crimson lips parting slightly as she said,
"Thank you, Brother~"
"Brother~ you’re so kind."
Su Bei finally ’snapped’. Feeling he needed to reassert his husbandly authority, he coughed heavily and said to Dan Wulan in a grave and earnest tone,
"Lan Bao’er, speak properly."
"Why must you be so sarcastic?"
"Don’t be so unreasonab—"
Before he could finish the word "unreasonable," the smile on Dan Wulan’s cheeks vanished. Her willow-leaf eyebrows arched sharply, and she stared at Su Bei, her voice cold.
"Are you trying to say I’m being unreasonable?"
"Who was it just now, outside, asking Lin Jinyu to call him ’Brother~’? Hmm?"
Su Bei sighed inwardly.
Indeed, she knew all along.
Then he coughed and said,
"Lan Bao’er, it’s a misunderstanding. Your husband and Queen Lin have absolutely nothing going on..."
Dan Wulan snorted coldly and said languidly,
"Of course, I know you two have nothing going on."
Then her brow furrowed again. She bit her thin lip tightly, stared at Su Bei, and scolded him in a cold voice.
"It’s precisely because there’s nothing going on!"
"Don’t think I don’t know about those little schemes in your head."
"Brother~?"
"What? Teaching Queen Lin how to make the Eastern Emperor fall in love with her? Did that require her to call you ’Brother~’?"
Su Bei swallowed hard, momentarily speechless.
Dan Wulan’s words had indeed hit the mark, making him feel a pang of guilt. A smile crept onto his face as he reached out to encircle her waist, coaxing softly in her ear,
"It’s all my fault... Alright, alright."
"Lan Bao’er has the best temperament. Your husband loves you the mo—"
A disdainful smile instantly touched Dan Wulan’s lips. She glanced at Su Bei, slapped his hand away, and sat down primly on the bed, crossing one leg as she said indifferently,
"Don’t."
"Lan Bao’er does not have a good temperament."
"After all, this Wulan is naturally jealous, not very magnanimous, and rather difficult..."
Su Bei: "..."
Su Bei felt he had been laboring under a misconception.
The women around him had gotten jealous before—be it his disciple Xiao Ruoching, Nan Ji, or even Li Zijun at times, who all showed faint hints of jealousy—but they were always appeased by a few smooth words from him.
This had led Su Bei to wonder if he was some kind of Casanova.
Now he finally understood. Perhaps it wasn’t that he was such a great Casanova, but rather that those women hadn’t been jealous enough...
"Lan Bao’er, I was wrong."
"Please forgive your husband."
Seeing Su Bei’s genuinely remorseful expression, Dan Wulan finally rose and took his large hand in her small one.
She knew when to stop. Since Su Bei had given her an out, she should take it.
Then she leaned her entire body against him, closed her eyes, and said softly,
"Don’t let it happen again..."
This bout of jealousy wasn’t just her being capricious. She understood Su Bei’s charm all too well. Especially when she heard that woman ask Su Bei to set aside an hour each day to teach her... the sense of crisis in her heart had intensified even more. At least, this way, he would understand what was truly in her heart. Hopefully, he wouldn’t just think of her as a willful woman.
