Chapter 34: Everything Will End Soon?
The next day, Julian was allowed to go home because his allergies had started to improve. Although there were still red spots on his skin, he felt he could rest at home rather than in the hospital.
He realized that Arcane still had to go to work and he didn’t want to bother him any further.
"Are you sure you’re okay? If you still feel sick or something, you can call me. I’ll come home right away to take care of you," said Arcane, rubbing Julian’s head.
"I’m fine! You don’t need to worry too much," he replied.
Arcane was silent for a moment as he looked at Julian. He felt he couldn’t leave him at home alone, even though he was clearly getting better.
But he also couldn’t leave his students, who currently needed him for their studies.
He was in a situation where he had to choose between staying home with his husband or going to school to be with his students.
"You know what? I’ll take a day off from teaching today."
He took off his tie, unbuttoned a few buttons on his black shirt, and sat down next to Julian.
"Huh? I told you I’m fine. You’re worrying too much. I’m not going to suddenly faint like yesterday!"
"I know you’re getting better. But I can’t just leave you like this," replied Arcane, rubbing his head.
He said that he could just give his students assignments to fill the empty hours or ask another math teacher to replace him that day.
"But if something happens to you, I won’t be able to forgive myself."
Julian felt so calm when he heard that. But why was Arcane so worried about him?
Did Arcane feel the same way about him too?
"Time fly faster, it’s been almost a year since we’ve been living together. Should we extend our contract? Or are you tired of living with me?"
DEG!
Julian’s heart seemed to stop when he heard that. What did Arcane mean?
Was he going to end their contract marriage because a year had passed? Even though there were still two months before it had officially been a year, why did time pass so quickly?
’I don’t want this contract to end. I want to stay with him. I don’t want this comfortable and warm feeling to end here. I don’t want to...’
All the memories in his head with Arcane immediately spun around like a precious memory tape he once had.
How Arcane smiled at him, how the man scolded him then forgave him, how serious his face was when he worked while wearing his glasses.
How he looked at him with a different gaze from the first time they met.
His face flushed as he thought about it. Arcane, who was watching TV, reflexively turned to him and saw his flushed face.
"Hey, why is your face so red? Has your allergy gotten worse? Or is this a side effect of the medicine?" he asked, surprised and concerned. He thought it was the red rash spreading across his face again.
As he was about to stand up to check Julian’s allergy medicine, the man held his arm to stop him from leaving. He held Arcane’s hand with both hands and shook his head.
"I-it’s not because of the allergy. As long as I don’t eat apples, I’m fine. Besides, it’s impossible for allergy medicine to have side effects like this," he said.
"Then what’s wrong with you?" Arcane knelt in front of him, looking into Julian’s eyes, which were now looking back at him.
His grip on the man’s hand tightened, as if he couldn’t say it. He didn’t want to be the one overreacting to Arcane’s attitude towards him.
But he wanted to know, was this love or just playing a role according to their contract?
"Just tell me. I’ll listen to whatever you have to say." His large, warm hand gently stroked her head, running through Julian’s dark green hair.
His lips pressed together into a thin line. Julian couldn’t say it, but his feelings kept pushing him to tell him.
"Hey Arcane, are you being nice because you said you would take responsibility for everything I do?" he asked.
"Huh? What do you mean by that?"
Julian was silent for a moment before finally opening his mouth again.
"All this time... You’ve always done everything for me. I know it’s part of the agreement we made that I don’t have to do anything, you’ll take care of everything. But... The longer I feel something that keeps filling my mind."
He explained his feelings to Arcane. The warm and loved feeling when he was far from the people who loved him, his parents.
Being with Arcane made him realize that he could get love not only from his parents but also from other people. Every day, that feeling grew stronger, making it impossible for Julian to keep it to himself.
"You care for me, take care of me when I’m sick. You even cheer me up when I’m sad. I feel so happy with everything you do for me. But... But is it all just an act for you?"
He lifted his head, revealing tears welling up in his yellow eyes. Fear surrounded him at that moment. He didn’t want it all to end now.
"Arcane... Are you—"
Before he could finish saying anything to him, Arcane pulled Julian’s head back and kissed him deeply.
A warm and gentle kiss. Slowly, his eyes closed as tears flowed, returning the kiss.
As soon as he released his kiss, Julian’s eyes seemed to search for answers in the green eyes of the man who had just kissed him.
Answers from the warm, gentle kiss that had even taken his first kiss.
"Arcane..."
Arcane’s eyes narrowed sharply, as if he looked so angry.
"Don’t talk like that. Don’t talk as if my attention to you is just an act!" he said firmly.
He grabbed his contract husband’s shoulders. Not hurting him, but strong enough to make his point.
"Do you think there is someone that stupid who would give you more attention than I do just for an act, even when it’s just the two of us?" he asked.
"Do you think I looked panicked yesterday when you had your allergic reaction, running to carry you into the hospital while screaming like a madman. Was that part of an act?" Arcane asked again, this time in a higher tone.
Still kneeling in front of him, she pulled Julian into her arms.
"Maybe I’m the fool. I’m the one who pays too much attention to you because every time I see you fragile, I want to protect you. But that’s because I love you, Julian."
Julian’s eyes widened when he heard this. Tears streamed down his face and his shoulders shook as he cried. He buried his face in his shoulder.
"I... Love you too."
