Chapter 33: I Should Have Been More Sensitive
Two hours after the incident, Julian slowly regained consciousness because he had fainted in front of the hospital. When he looked around, he realized he was in the hospital, and Arcane was sitting next to his bed, waiting for him to wake up.
His throat still hurt a little, though not as much as before. He noticed a rash on his hand, similar to the one he had gotten when he ate an apple as a child. He had tried to avoid the fruit, but accidentally ate it anyway.
Arcane realized that Julian had finally regained consciousness, so he put down his phone and held Julian’s hand.
"Hey, can you hear me? How are you feeling now?" he asked.
Julian tried to open his mouth, and he replied in a soft, hoarse voice. "Much better. Although my hands feel itchy and my throat still hurts a little."
"It’s okay, the doctor said that after you take your medicine again, your allergies will improve. I was really panicked when you started fainting when we got to the hospital."
He explained that when they had just gotten out of the car, Julian suddenly almost fell from fainting, but luckily Arcane caught him and carried him into the hospital.
What he didn’t explain was how Arcane looked extremely panicked, even screaming in the hospital for help because Julian’s condition had him truly worried.
A man as calm as he was became uncontrollable seeing someone he knew he loved in such a dangerous condition. Especially since he was already at the point of fainting, which meant it was truly threatening his life.
"But luckily I’m still alive. Otherwise, I’d be watching you from heaven right now. Will I be able to eat apples freely in heaven?" Julian chuckled despite his pain to break the tension and worry between them.
However, the joke did not make Arcane smile or laugh at all. Instead, he squeezed the blanket that Julian was currently using as if he was unhappy about it.
In Arcane’s heart, he had just found someone who truly cared about him and whom he cared about deeply. He had lost someone like that a long time ago, namely his mother.
Now Julian was joking as if he could die at any moment because of his allergies?
Seeing how his husband didn’t react to his joke made Julian feel a little awkward. However, he was happy because Arcane truly cared about him. He wasn’t happy with the fact that he could experience something worse because of his allergies.
"Come on, I’m just kidding. Don’t look at me like I’m the criminal here. I’m the victim here," he said.
The man, who worked as a math teacher, could only shake his head while ruffling his husband’s hair. "I know that."
Slowly, his hand touched Arcane’s hand on his head and held it weakly.
"But thank you for bringing me here. I’m glad you care so much about me," he said with a smile.
That smile melted Arcane’s heart. He rarely softened when he was angry. But for some reason, whenever he was angry at Julian, his anger quickly disappeared. It was as if he couldn’t stay angry at the young man for long.
Not long after, the nurse came with medicine and porridge for Julian to eat. Because of the problem with his throat, he had to eat warm porridge because he had difficulty swallowing.
Without thinking twice, Arcane took the bowl of porridge and fed him.
"I-I can eat it myself. Both my hands are still working fine!" said Julian with a red face.
"But I know your hands are still a bit swollen and have a rash that feels painful. Are you sure you want to do it yourself?"
That was true, Julian’s hands were still a bit sore and stiff. With no other choice, he opened his mouth to eat the porridge being fed to him.
A slight smile appeared on his cute face, and he was filled with happiness at that moment.
"I called Marshal to tell him you were in the hospital. He’ll come by this afternoon after work," said Arcane as s
he fed his husband again.
"Okay, thank you."
While at the hospital that day, Marshal and his friends came to visit Julian. His cousin was very worried when he heard that Julian had accidentally eaten an apple.
"If Aunt Megara finds out, she’ll kill me!" said Marshal, because it was clear that Julian had been entrusted to him, so whatever happened to him was Marshal’s responsibility.
However, it wasn’t because he was afraid of being scolded by Julian’s parents, but because he was genuinely worried since they had known each other since childhood.
"It’s good that Archie moved quickly to bring you here. I didn’t think someone like him would care so much about others so quickly," said Hans.
"What do you mean by that?" asked Julian curiously.
Since Arcane was at the cafeteria in the hospital at the time, Ryan recounted something that had happened back when they were still in college.
He said that Arcane wasn’t actually someone who cared deeply about others because his kindness had been taken advantage of by someone.
While they were at their college tennis club, one of the students approached Arcane and became close friends with him. They were so close that people thought they were dating.
He often gave some of his salary to his friend, because his friend needed money for his mother’s medical expenses.
"But one day Hans found out that Roland wasn’t using the money for his mother’s medical expenses, but was gambling at the casino instead."
Hans nodded his head, confirming this. "One of my uncles owns the casino where Roland used the money to gamble. When I arrived, he was having fun with the women, using a lot of money for betting."
He then ed this to Arcane, and as soon as Arcane found out, he immediately cut ties with Roland.
"Since then, Arcane has become somewhat closed off and cold to everyone except us. He also didn’t fully explain what happened between him and Roland on the night he cut ties with him," Marshal added.
And since then, even when someone was hurt or needed something in front of him, Arcane pretended to be blind to it all and didn’t care about anyone at all.
Hearing that story from them, Julian felt that it meant Arcane had opened up to him again. Although he didn’t know if this meant Arcane accepted him or if it was just part of their role as contract husbands.
However, could it be that the man had actually begun to heal from his pain after meeting Julian and trusting him?
"But from how he shows his concern for you, we are sure that he now trusts you even more than the three of us."
Those words were enough to make Julian feel that maybe he had a chance to get closer to him?
He remembered how Arcane’s face had been filled with panic as he lifted his body when his allergy reacted. He also remembered how Arcane had held his hand in the car to calm him down.
’Could this marriage turn into something sweeter?’
