Chapter 515: Chapter 515 Ordinary Yu Guiwan_1
Senior Sister’s words were like a dagger piercing Xu Lai’s heart.
He knelt before his master’s coffin, feeling as if a mountain a million zhang high was pressing down on his back. Even when he had once shouldered the fate of billions of souls of the Human Race, Xu Lai had never felt such a heavy burden.
It was so heavy that he couldn’t stand upright, so heavy he could hardly breathe.
"Wu Ying’s ancestor was very kind; when he and the other Hehuan Valley disciples were executing us, he showed mercy and secretly slipped us a few elixirs."
"Unfortunately, we fell into the deepest abyss of the Mass Burial Mound, a place... where even those in the Immortal Venerable Realm must halt."
"We were cut off from our Divine Sense, our cultivation level, from everything. In the utter darkness, we could clearly feel our lives slipping away. Every minute and every second was torture and agony."
Yu Guiwan spoke of these hardships as if they had happened to someone else, her descriptions painfully understated.
"In that pitch-blackness and despair, your two senior brothers and I were about to give up. But Father said... he said that Qingfeng’s cultivation level was low and that you might be bullied if you were alone out there. He said we couldn’t die here, that we had to find you."
"Because we are a family, and we should be whole."
Yu Guiwan bit her chapped lips hard. "We walked and walked, and we kept walking for about a thousand years, carrying the body of your second senior brother, who died along the way. Finally, we made it out of the darkness."
"But we stumbled into a Quasi-Emperor Realm cultivator’s legacy Barrier, deep within the Mass Burial Mound. Though it was dilapidated, it had mountains, water, and even Spiritual Energy."
"Sadly, the Barrier was sealed. It was easy to enter but impossible to leave."
Yu Guiwan said softly, "We buried Song Zhongling there and cultivated diligently, trying to find a way out as soon as possible."
They had been completely secluded from the world. In a small Barrier inhabited by only three people... Xu Lai’s heart ached so fiercely it felt as if it were constantly bleeding.
"Later, your third senior brother died inside the Barrier, and Father... he grew old as well."
"But you know the Mass Burial Mound. There are always those unafraid of death, corpse-scavengers looking for treasure in its depths. We would see one or two every thirty to fifty years."
Yu Guiwan helped the kneeling Xu Lai to his feet, her voice tender. "Father and I heard from the cultivators passing outside the Barrier that you had triggered a heavenly tribulation, causing the Hundred Immortal Sects to suffer grievous losses. We heard you broke through to the Celestial Venerable Realm, shattering the fetters of the Human Race. We were all so happy for you."
"Later, you stepped into the Immortal Venerable Realm, and then the Quasi-Emperor Realm. Father knew of all your various exploits in the Immortal Domain. When he heard that you might even reach the Emperor Realm, he... he laughed for a very long time."
Xu Lai’s expression turned bleak.
He had never truly been alone. In some unknown corner, his master, his senior sister, and his two senior brothers had always been keeping him in their thoughts.
Seeing Xu Lai’s expression, Yu Guiwan refrained from speaking more about her father and instead spoke of herself. "My talent was decent enough, but cultivating alone is a bit boring. Still, it was also very carefree."
The white-haired Yu Guiwan spoke of her solitary life.
It was a life clearly filled with despair, yet in his senior sister’s telling, it all seemed so insignificant. Nearly a hundred thousand years of wasted time passed by like the blink of an eye.
"Senior Sister, you mastered the core legacy of that Quasi-Emperor and left the Barrier a thousand years ago. Why didn’t you come find me?" Xu Lai asked despondently. "I’ve... always been looking for all of you."
Yu Guiwan didn’t answer. Instead, she sighed deeply and said softly, "What’s past is past. It’s not important anymore."
"Because Grandmaster was unwilling."
Another voice came from the temple’s main hall. It was Yu Guiwan’s disciple, Wu Ying, who was kneeling on the floor. She spoke with sincerity.
"I ask for punishment, Master. I read Grandmaster’s last testament without permission."
"Silence! Get out."
Yu Guiwan’s face turned cold in an instant. A terrifying aura condensed around her, and the torrential downpour outside froze in mid-air, refusing to fall.
A sliver of comfort finally entered Xu Lai’s heart.
Senior Sister has reached the Immortal Venerable Realm. Though it’s only the initial stage, that must be why she could live for a hundred thousand years.
But his expression quickly darkened again.
An Immortal Venerable’s lifespan is only a hundred thousand years. And Senior Sister’s body... it was shrouded in a dense aura of death. Her time was clearly near.
Suppressing his emotions, Xu Lai said gently, "Speak freely. Your Martial Uncle will back you up."
The mention of "Martial Uncle" was enough to make Wu Ying speak. "Before Grandmaster passed away, he left a last testament instructing Master that even if she managed to leave the small Barrier one day, she was not to contact you, Junior Martial Uncle."
"Why?" Xu Lai frowned.
"Grandmaster was afraid that you, Martial Uncle... might develop inner demons."
Ignoring her master’s icy gaze, Wu Ying steeled herself and continued, "Master didn’t want to see you either, but... her lifespan is nearly at its end."
Xu Lai fell silent.
He was a clever man; he understood what Wu Ying meant. He also understood why Wu Ying had spent the last two years leaving his Senior Sister’s handwriting at the old Heavenly Court sect gate and why she had taken the wedding invitation.
Yu Guiwan didn’t want to see Xu Lai. So Wu Ying had to leave clues for Xu Lai to find her, refusing to let her master pass away with such a regret.
"Sigh."
With a long sigh from his Senior Sister, the veil of rain, which had been suspended in the air, suddenly plummeted to the earth, splashing upon the bluestone slabs.
Gazing at the rain, she said bitterly, "Father knew you were stubborn. He was afraid you wouldn’t be able to let it go."
"And what about you, Senior Sister?" Xu Lai asked again. "Why didn’t you look for me?"
"For someone dead to come back to life is a good thing. But for them to die again soon after... that is a bad thing. You are an Emperor Realm cultivator, with nine hundred thousand years of life ahead of you. When I left the Barrier, I only had less than a thousand years remaining."
Yu Guiwan smiled gently. "How could I be so cruel as to let you live the rest of your life with regret—"
"Senior Sister," Xu Lai interrupted. "My wife and I held our wedding banquet at the sect. If we head back now, we can still make it for dinner."
"..."
Yu Guiwan was quiet for a moment, then shook her head. "I won’t go."
"Where is the wedding invitation?"
Xu Lai looked at Wu Ying, who hurriedly retrieved the invitation from her storage space and handed it to Yu Guiwan.
Xu Lai stepped back and bowed deeply. "Qingfeng planted a courtyard of grapes for you, Senior Sister. Once they’re ripe, I’ll peel them and place them before your grave."
Yu Guiwan was taken aback.
Xu Lai turned and flew away.
His Senior Sister actually laughed, her anger giving way to amusement. "That Little Junior Brother’s tongue has gotten much sharper than before. He’s teasing me, saying he’s been paying respects to an empty grave for a hundred thousand years."
"Please punish your disciple for speaking out of turn," Wu Ying said, still kneeling on the ground.
Yu Guiwan shook her head. "I don’t blame you. You may rise."
She then turned her gentle gaze to the corner of the hall, where Daoist Yunlong and the little girl, Cui Cui, were shivering. She smiled kindly.
"What is it? You don’t recognize me anymore?"
"..."
Daoist Yunlong was on the verge of tears from sheer fright.
Recognize her? Of course, he recognized her. But the woman he knew was the ordinary Yu Guiwan, not the Immortal Venerable Yu Guiwan who had lived for a hundred thousand years, nor did she have a little junior brother named Qingfeng. Under this starry sky, how many cultivators would dare to call themselves Qingfeng? Just that one. To think he had blocked Emperor Qingfeng outside the tavern and even tried to fool his senses... he felt like an absolute idiot.
"Granny Yu, he... he’s really Emperor Qingfeng?" Cui Cui asked, still baffled as she pointed to where Xu Lai had disappeared.
"Yes, he is."
Yu Guiwan’s eyes filled with tenderness. "My father’s last disciple, the Heavenly Court’s Little Junior Brother, Qingfeng Xu Lai."
The rainstorm had ceased unnoticed, allowing moonlight to spill over the quiet little village.
A gentle breeze stirred, slowly arriving. It passed over the small hill, wound around the chimney smoke of a home on the east side of the village, and finally settled upon Senior Sister’s wrinkled face.
After a long while.
Yu Guiwan smiled. "Come. Let’s go congratulate our Little Junior Brother."
