Chapter 1933: Chapter 1933: Major Sweep and Conflict in the Western District
In the latter part of the night, nothing happened. After dawn, Xu Huo went out to buy breakfast.
Perhaps because nothing happened for two consecutive days, and the night before he even triggered a fight, the way people around looked at him gradually changed. The hatred was no longer apparent, replaced by a little respect mixed with fear.
Specifically, it could be seen in the neighbors who used to wish they could walk close to the wall when passing him. Now they would quietly greet him, very afraid that he would hold a grudge against them for any reason.
The breakfast shop owner even gave him an extra bun.
When Xu Huo returned, the girl was already awake, recovering well. He shared some of his breakfast with her and asked after they finished eating, "Have you thought about where to go?"
The girl’s action of drinking water slowed down. She held the cup and shook her head.
"It’s not safe here either," Xu Huo pointed his chin at the decaying furniture beside him, "Think carefully about a place to go, while the roads are clear during the day. I have to go to work. Lock the door when you leave."
The girl remained seated, watching him leave.
Three inspectors died again last night, but only the one hiding the photo was from Xu Huo’s division, the other two were from another division. Last night, after the flying device found them based on their location, the clothes and pants were stripped off the body, and except for a wound on the throat, there were no other obvious marks. Li Song had already inspected the corpse and sent two people to the vicinity to see if there were any witnesses.
But hopes were slim.
There wasn’t much concern within the Supervision Department about the inspector’s death, just fear and anger at those recently targeting the inspectors being too rampant. If they didn’t properly crack down, who knows how many more would die.
"Do you have anything to say?" Li Song asked when he saw Xu Huo hesitating to speak.
Xu Huo mentioned the photo incident from yesterday, "The place where the incident happened seems to be not far from that family."
"People have already been sent to ask. That family went to hide at a relative’s house last night and never returned." Li Song waved his hand, indicating the topic could be put aside, and brought the focus back to the crackdown on the Western District.
The number of dead inspectors was already significant, with such frequent targeted attacks, saying there’s not a single witness simply didn’t make sense. It’s just that nobody wanted to get involved in the Supervision Department’s affairs. But people can’t just die in vain, so after discussions among several captains, the division applied to headquarters for a carpet-style investigation. In less than half an hour, orders were communicated back, agreeing to a thorough inspection of each division’s jurisdiction. To avoid uncontrollable situations during the process, they were also allowed to carry weapons Level Three and above.
The inspectors’ guns were Level One weapons, and the laser cannon in the arsenal was a Level Two weapon. The throwable laser bullet and the upgraded Armed Flying Device were Level Three weapons, while the armed robot was a Level Four weapon.
The armed robots were common peace-maintaining weapons in the Eastern District, but very precious in the Western District, usually not used.
Besides these upgraded weapons, the inspectors’ protective clothing also needed an upgrade, with specialized matching protective instruments, capable of resisting ordinary firearm attacks, and even offering some protection against large explosions.
Of course, there were nuances to the investigation. With limited manpower, the inspectors can’t search every single place, so most civilians could be skipped. The main targets were local powers—going in to find trouble, these people, with plenty of intelligence, would proactively relay what they saw and heard. Even if they knew nothing, to avoid making enemies with the Supervision Department, they would actively find people to cooperate.
"By offending everyone, aren’t you afraid they’ll retaliate against the Supervision Department afterwards?" Han Cong couldn’t help but quietly ask Lin Guang.
"They wouldn’t dare." Lin Guang also lowered his voice, "Even though they have Players and a lot of weapons, as long as they dare to openly challenge the Supervision Department, the headquarters will send people to deal with them. I heard two years ago there was such a Dark Power that united the district civilians, burned down two division buildings with their many weapons, and openly declared the Supervision Department was not allowed to enter their territory anymore. But before they could even celebrate for two days, they were all killed in one night, the streets were thoroughly purged, not a single survivor was left."
"So what are ordinary people compared to Players." He sighed and shook his head, and quickly ran forward when he heard Captain Jiang calling.
The Black Forces Organization mostly swallowed their pride, instructing their men not to clash with the Supervision Department, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. There was always someone who couldn’t bear it and lashed out, even stabbing an inspector to death on the street!
That really stirred up a hornet’s nest. The killer and his accomplices were shot dead on the spot. Some inspectors recognized them and knew their identities. With armed robots paving the way, several captains directly entered their stronghold, forcing the leader to come out and resolve the issue.
Interestingly, this Black Forces Organization’s game center was just bombed yesterday, and it happened to be the Heyue Winery’s rival.
The leader invited the captains into the winery, while the others waited outside.
"What do they want to talk about?" Xu Huo asked, "If they dare openly oppose the Supervision Department, shouldn’t they all be dealt with as an example?"
"If everyone were offended, although the Eastern District backs them, we ultimately live in the Western District. Why make trouble for ourselves? It’s better to settle things peacefully." Lin Guang said.
The matter was actually quite easy to understand. In essence, the owner of Heyue Winery intended to bribe to settle the issue.
What was unexpected was that a knife flew out of nowhere, piercing Captain Jiang’s throat.
With someone dead, the scene immediately became chaotic. Amid angry shouts and gunfire, both people from Heyue Winery and the captains from the Supervision Department quickly retreated. At this moment, Li Song shouted, "Captain Jiang has been killed," and the inspectors and armed robots left outside rushed into the winery.
A melee suddenly broke out. All kinds of gunfire flew around. Following Lin Guang, Xu Huo was blown away by the explosion’s impact. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Wang Kai shoot dead the owner of Heyue Winery.
With the owner dead, most of his people scattered and fled, including the Players. However, they were mostly tracked down and killed by the armed robots and flying devices, posing no real threat.
"You’re not bad," Li Song patted Wang Kai’s shoulder, "consider it avenging old Jiang."
Wang Kai looked a bit somber, "With so many people dead, won’t it cause trouble..."
"Trouble?" Li Song sneered, turning his head to address the onlookers, "I now have reason to suspect that certain Black Power Organizations led by Heyue Winery are deliberately and systematically targeting the Supervision Department. If the thorough investigation in three days yields no results, I will apply to headquarters for special investigators to intervene!"
Silence fell over the scene.
Having achieved the desired effect, Li Song ordered the investigation to continue.
With the continuation of the inspection, this warning also spread across the Western District. By the time night fell, many Players appeared in the district.
