Capítulo 1943: Chapter 1943: The Feud Between Yuquan City and Agor
The player who spoke these words was speaking in the game’s public square. Those who knew a little about Lian City’s past thought he made a fair point, especially regarding Lian City’s rise. Initially, before Lian City invited Agor Corporation, it was dirt poor; after Agor Corporation came in and did things, they couldn’t just burn bridges and only want benefits, could they? Why would others agree?
These words from the Eastern District’s standpoint were quite incendiary, causing some players who initially sympathized with Western District People to stop speaking, because the person indeed made a point.
“You’re talking nonsense!” A female player pushed through the crowd to the center of the square, pointing at the person who had just spoken. “How much did Agor Corporation pay you to distort the truth here? Western District People killing a hundred thousand in a riot? Who told you that number? Agor Corporation? Agor Corporation is a tech company; armed robots and armed flying devices, as well as various portable weapons and instruments, have long been widespread. After collaborating with the Yuchuan City Government, they also provided sufficient arms to the municipal government. How can ordinary civilians fight against that?”
“Massacre of a hundred thousand? If those at the bottom can’t even get enough money for food, and still manage to rise up and kill a hundred thousand seamlessly, then it’s because Agor Corporation allowed it!”
Her words got everyone thinking again. Yes, Agor Corporation is a tech company. It’s not like they lack weapons of mass destruction, plus they have armed robots and players. Dealing with people who can’t even get enough to eat should be easy, right?
The first speaker sneered upon hearing this, “Aren’t there any players among ordinary civilians?”
The female player mocked him, “Once they become players, you still categorize them as ordinary civilians? I wonder what your limited education tells you about the definition of ordinary civilians! Speaking of players, are there any players left in the Western District now? Aren’t all the players working for the people of the Eastern District?”
She no longer wished to debate with the man but turned to face the other people in the square, “Let me tell you the truth.”
“So-called Western District People and people of the Eastern District were actually all Lian City people. Those who have lived here for generations and those who migrated later, without mentioning first come, first served, as long as they settled in Lian City, isn’t it correct to call them Lian City people?”
“Since they’re Lian City people, how were they divided into people of the Eastern and Western Districts? Those with power, influence, money, connections, or exceptional skills were kept in the Eastern Districts and became people of the Eastern District. Those at the bottom of society, relying on manual labor and easily replaceable and discarded, were driven to the Western District and became Western District People.”
“Some believe Lian City’s current prosperity relies entirely on Agor Corporation. I won’t deny Agor Corporation made a significant contribution, but it also cost Yuchuan City Government a third of its administrative rights. Lian City belongs to all Lian City people. To get Agor Corporation’s help, we agreed to give them a third of the city, and they agreed. Isn’t this mutual benefit?”
“But Agor Corporation is too greedy. After gaining a third of the city, they wanted the whole. From our living and farming land, the water we consume daily, even the air we breathe, they want us to pay for it. After grasping the city’s economic lifeline, they repeatedly forced Yuchuan City Government to retreat and even ignored the municipal government’s directives!”
“The people living here lost their land, and even the houses they built became assets ‘seized’ by Agor Corporation. Why should they pay Agor Corporation taxes for a sip of water or a breath of air?”
“Agor Corporation doesn’t care, for their goal is to drive the bottom-class civilians away. Whether they die or get driven elsewhere doesn’t matter; they just want to seize Lian City!”
“They’ve stolen the homes of Lian City people and want to cut off their livelihoods. Anyone would fight them desperately. Regarding the hundred thousand you mentioned, doesn’t Agor Corporation know who most of those people were?”
“They were the civilians slaughtered!”
“The so-called riot was actually a joint Resistance by the Yuchuan City Government and Lian City people. They just wanted to drive Agor Corporation away, but Agor Corporation threatened lives to force the municipal government to sign multiple agreements ceding city land. Nearly a hundred thousand were killed, and the city government had to compromise. In the end, even the government’s people were driven out of Lian City. Now, the municipal government in the Eastern District doesn’t have any relation to us Lian City people; it’s all Agor Corporation’s people!”
“We wanted to coexist peacefully with Agor Corporation, but Agor Corporation wants us dead. Who doesn’t deserve to live then?!”
Revealed from a different perspective, the process of the East-West divide sounded more impactful, igniting the wrath of the people present, especially the always-oppressed Western District People, who shouted “take back our home” and began to surround those players speaking for the Eastern District.
This happened in a game, where nobody would die, and players could block out pain. Yet, the oppression brought by collective anger was real, for it was a hatred deep in the bone, something no words or actions could erase, only death could temporarily resolve it.
“Can you blame the people of the Eastern District?” someone said in a panic, “Isn’t it because Western District People are too useless that they were eliminated in this game world?”
“You must be brainwashed to the point your brain is empty!” Another person punched him in the face, sending him tumbling. “According to you, only the strong won’t be eliminated; only the strong deserve to live. Then if I kill you, why would you seek revenge? I’m stronger than you, isn’t it right to beat or kill you?”
Unfortunately, these words were quickly drowned out. Having someone lead the way, other people with suppressed anger couldn’t hold back and acted.
The game square became chaotic, with players being ejected every second.
Xu Huo, standing at the edge of the square, was forcibly logged off when a knife suddenly stabbed him from behind.
From the situation in the game, it was a bit surprising to see so many in the Eastern District speaking up for the Western District. Even though the Eastern District was managed by Agor Corporation into a harmonious and high-welfare livable city, they shouldn’t have revealed so much about the Western District. The Western and Eastern Districts weren’t equally matched, and most people didn’t even have any interaction, so there was no need to pay attention to it… It was somewhat abnormal.
When Xu Huo left the game hall, he found the Resistance Army member who secretly escorted the mute girl had appeared nearby again.
It was deep into the night when the boy downstairs returned, limping. With a bruised face, he knocked on Xu Huo’s door, “Can you give me something to eat?”
“Is your father still alive?” Xu Huo asked.
“He’s dead,” the boy grinned. “He wanted to sell me. I stabbed him to death when I escaped. He should have died long ago. He thought I didn’t know he was the one who killed my mom. I knew all along. My mom couldn’t bear to leave me, so I stabbed her, thinking it might help her avoid a miserable fate, but she secretly came back to see me and got caught by that man. He sold her to the bathhouse, and a few days later I saw her corpse, covered in wounds, her body hollowed out. I couldn’t win against that vagabond, only managed to pick up bones…”
The mute girl hugged him distressedly, and only when she felt blood on her hand did she realize he had a wound on his back.
The boy couldn’t hold on any longer. Leaning against the mute girl, his expression became a bit unfocused, “I wanted to grow up and slowly torture him… but I can’t grow up… Thank you… the meat was delicious…”
The last sentence was directed at Xu Huo. Xu Huo walked up to him and asked, “Do you want to leave here?”
“No…” The boy instinctively replied, “Kill them all…”
Xu Huo injected three Self-Healing Potions near his wound.
