Volume 6 Chapter 36: A Sinner
The fiery red glow of the burning city illuminated the Dying Steel Citadel.
On the vast underground river, several medium-sized, uniquely styled iron boats floated amidst the black smoke.
On the decks, soldiers were frantically trying to operate unfamiliar equipment.
As members of the Dying Steel Citadel legion, their training had always been centered around Thermodynamic Cores.
However, these small ships they were now on had no such power source.
Coupled with the fact that these vessels had long been neglected, it was a miracle they could even move.
The dwarf king, Gur Barlow, stood silently at the bow, squinting as he gazed at the rampaging steel giant in the distance.
Is this...the inevitable calamity for my people? he thought.
Until yesterday, this city was thriving.
Yet, with just an issue in the Thermodynamic Cores, in a moment, this centuries-old town was reduced to ruins.
As the king, he was utterly powerless.
Ironically, it was under his orders that the guardian machine, Obelisk, had the Thermodynamic Core installed and activated, it’s all to test his son.
However, before the test could even begin, the town was about to be destroyed by his foolish command.
It was the Thermodynamic Cores!
As the king, he should have foreseen this.
However, he had been blinded by tradition and pride.
This incident revealed the nation’s over-reliance on Thermodynamic Core technology.
Yet, he had not realized this until now.
As a result, the capital was on the brink of destruction.
The royal family had no means to counter it, not even to evacuate.
Worse still, due to the long-standing isolation policy, the Noble Dwarves had no kin outside this place.
This meant the entire upper echelon of the dwarf race would perish here.
So, I have been wrong all along.
"I...am a sinner," Gur Barlow closed his eyes.
Ironically, the ships now being used were ones he had confiscated from Chuck years ago.
Unexpectedly, they were now the last hope.
The once protector, Obelisk, had now become a monstrous destroyer.
What could these few boats possibly do?
The equipment on these ships was already struggling to deal with the rogue Steam Motion Armors.
How could they possibly match up to Obelisk, equipped with the highest-grade weaponry and numerous strategic-level spells?
"Your Majesty, what do we do now?" a senior elder, dressed in ceremonial garb, approached the bow and asked the dwarf king.
The King’s Fortress had already been obliterated by direct strategic-level magic attacks.
Attempts to use long-range communication spells to contact the residential areas and military were futile.
Such a massive calamity had befallen the city out of nowhere.
With the isolation policy in place and a puppet capital on the surface, Mahamatra might still operate autonomously for a while after the city's destruction.
However, this nation would inevitably decline.
The fall of Dying Steel Citadel meant Mahamatra would lose its foundation and true power to resist foreign enemies.
The dwarf race would once again be reduced to slaves to outsiders, as it was centuries ago.
This braided elder had served under the dwarf king for a hundred years.
When the disaster struck, while others died or fled, this loyal minister skillfully gathered the remaining forces and quickly deployed these neglected ships from the warehouse.
The dwarf king turned to look at this loyal subordinate and old friend, contemplating heavily.
After a moment of silence, he spoke a few words and sighed deeply.
"Your Majesty! Are you serious?" The braided elder’s eyes widened in shock upon hearing this.
"I am responsible for this situation!" Geuer said. "But leaving hope for this nation is the last duty of the royal family."
"But..."
Should we really abandon this city?
Abandon the legacy of our ancestors and Tuvok?
The braided elder wanted to say more, but his words were cut off.
The reason was clear—the iron octopus, wandering the underground river and rumbling, was heading straight for them.
"It’s spotted us!" All the soldiers on the ship heard the dwarf king’s roar, "Quick, head to the upwelling stream! We need to retreat before it’s too late!"
The four iron ships immediately turned to leave, but the steam-spewing iron octopus lumbered after them, rapidly closing the distance, with waves crashing around it.
The frenzied and filthy magic coiled around the steel monstrosity.
The puppet, which should have been mindless, seemed controlled by a pair of malicious hands.
As it charged forward, numerous small hills and islets were flattened and swallowed by the vast underground river.
Behind the giant armored head of the iron octopus, two sinister white lights flickered within the hollow eye sockets, radiating malevolence.
Unheard by anyone, a maniacal laughter echoed faintly from within the iron octopus. In the violently shaking control room, a dwarf's body, wrapped in dark magic, continued to spurt blood.
Despite this, an exaggerated and crazed smile remained plastered on his face.
His consciousness had long shattered, and within his fragile soul, only one chaotic voice remained, endlessly repeating two commands.
Kill the god, then destroy everything.
Despair spread across the land.
As the pinnacle of technological achievement, the iron octopus, in mere seconds, brought the four fleeing iron ships within its firing range.
Immense magical power flowed through the magical inscriptions on the iron octopus, forming a terrifying light sphere capable of annihilating an entire army in a single blast.
…Finally, the four ships vanished in the fiery explosion.
