Chapter 72: Sniper Skill
"Okay Hexael, explain it," I say as I approach the administration office, the place is empty and quiet.
"What do you want to know?" Hexael asks as he follows me through the halls.
"What change did the first time travel cause? If you count the first time I traveled to the past along with yesterday, that’s already two interferences with destiny. Tell me, what got worse?" I ask seriously.
"Hmm, I have to say things got a lot worse, there’s a Cataclysm Class Type 5 monster in the administration office," as he says this, I freeze.
’What the hell? That’s literally one of the most powerful monsters in the entire world?’ It has the highest type and the highest class, since the Demon Class is just a legend.
"...Don’t worry Setsuna, even though there are now two monsters instead of one, the Cataclysm Class monster won’t be here for long. If you start a fight with it, you’ll only need to last 10 to 15 minutes," he explains.
"And why?" I question uncertainly.
"Because most Cataclysm Class monsters are intelligent and not very fond of being revealed. If he’s discovered by someone, he’ll flee after a few minutes unless he’s cornered or can’t really escape the fight."
"Plus, he also won’t fight seriously, because monsters of this class prefer to keep their power hidden unless its use is necessary, so you can come out of this confrontation alive."
"And as for why I said it’ll be 10 to 15 minutes, it’s because certain types of magic tend to have this ’delay’ time. In other words, they’re cautious about tracking, instant death, or guided magic."
"So as soon as they’re discovered, they tend to stick around for just a few minutes and then disappear to avoid being caught by that type of magic, whether from other magical girls or even rival monsters."
"...Why did it get so much worse?" Every time Ayane is in danger, destiny will already consider the first time travel, and if I go back a day in the past, that’s already two counts. Until now, destiny could only account for two, having such a huge threat is absurd.
"It’s because you made Ayane not show up at school the first time. Destiny adjusted that in case you try again. I bet you understand," he says, and yes, I do. Destiny placed a monster that has the ability to affect an entire city.
In other words, no matter where I take Ayane, she won’t be out of the risk area. It’s really absurd how vindictive destiny is, the cause and effect are truly too unbalanced.
’Okay, so I just need to last a few minutes...the problem is that in addition to the mind control monster, there’s another one now...’ I need help, I’m not stupid enough not to understand this.
I need someone to deal with the mind control monster while I somehow manage to survive and distract the Cataclysm Class monster.
"Could you describe what I’m about to face?" I need to at least know what I’m up against.
"Of course I can tell you. He’s a 178-centimeter humanoid. He has a darkened, almost black, flesh body while his face lacks a face."
"The aspect of his appearance is like a tangle of flesh lines in the shape of a person, while he wears a cloak and clothing both made of the same flesh."
"He has a large eye on his chest while he has 4 smaller eyes around the large eye on his chest. His eyes have red pupils and prominent veins, while the monster holds a 1.9-meter wide and thin sword made of his own flesh, which can be restored even if broken."
"He is usually always seen this way without changes, so Setsuna, I suggest you be careful with close combat. By the way, the way this monster is called is quite simple."
"Among the monsters, he is called the Black Hero or the Magic Swordsman." Hexael really provides the perfect description, following our agreement for him to help me.
’Complicated.’ From the names, the description already tells me that he is a monster that focuses on close combat, but is also skilled in magic.
I activate my magical girl outfit completely, including the mask and gloves, while holding my sniper rifle.
’...Should be good enough.’ I start charging a shot from the sniper, something useful I learned from solo training after training with Ayane.
My sniper can have its bullets charged from the "outside," so in front of the barrel, there is a small sphere that emits a magical pulse, as if the gun’s bullet is already outside the barrel.
But this only increases the destructive power. The good thing is that as I charge it with magic, the shot’s power increases. I’ll have a single, extremely powerful shot ready to use.
’I’ll reach the Administration in 3 minutes...’ I calculate the time to try to predict the shot’s power. Charging the magical energy of the shot for 50 seconds generated a shot so powerful that I was knocked back against a building during training.
Charging this shot for 3 minutes or more will probably throw me out of the school, so strong.
’I need to make this monster see me as a threat.’ If the so-called Black Hero sees me as a threat, he’ll follow me out to try to kill me before leaving, and the mind control monster will be the other magical girls’ problem.
’I have 1 shot, I need to make it count.’ I won’t have the chance to charge a magical shot in the middle of the fight. I look at the sniper, the energy sphere pulsing and generating small sparks around it as I walk to the office.
"You’re nervous, Setsuna, but you did well. Limiting Ayane by making her not transform into a magical girl, choosing to have her take care of the civilians and tell the other magical girls to come here were good ideas."
"If you can survive the Black Hero, Ayane will be 100% safe," Hexael says to encourage me. He notices how tense I am. I don’t deny that I’m afraid of facing this thing.
A month ago, I could barely handle the fight against an intelligent Humanoid Class monster. Now I’ll have to face one of the highest class, which will undoubtedly also be intelligent.
’I must remain calm. Nervousness, fear, or any other such feelings are unnecessary at this moment.’ Hexael disappears as I open the administration office door, pointing my gun inside.
Soon I see the problematic enemy. It really doesn’t look like much just by observing, but it matches the description Hexael detailed for me. I see the large eye of that thing looking at me as it sits on the desk.
I also see another monster sitting in the chair while messing with the computer. It seems to be the one controlling the minds of others. It’s well disguised as a human, except for the fact that it has 3 eyes on its head.
"Magical girl, what are you doing here alone?" the 3-eyed monster asks as I point my gun at it. The shot’s power continues to increase. One shot and I would kill it for sure, but if I waste this shot, the other monster will become a problem.
"...It seems her problems are with you," the 3-eyed monster says without taking his eyes off the computer screen, while I aim the gun at the other monster’s head.
"Yes," the Black Hero says, standing up from the desk, and immediately my legs tremble and I almost collapse to the floor. My fingers also tremble on the trigger, and I’m paralyzed with pure fear.
’W-What a bizarre murderous intent.’ He just moved, and even so, my body was filled with dread and the desire to flee. He didn’t even get into a fighting stance. Just the fact that he moved with that sword in hand was enough to terrify me.
"If you tremble that much, you won’t be able to aim, magical girl," the Black Hero says, taking a step forward, and that single step increases my fear even more. His murderous aura spreading.
’T-Tsk.’ I’ve never felt like this before, and it’s horrible. I want to move, I want to shoot, but I can’t. My body doesn’t obey, even though the fear is nothing to my mind, for my body the fear is absolute.
’Why won’t you move!! MOVE!’ I think as much as I want my body to move while the monster approaches, his sword almost dragging on the ground.
Now I understand why he is a Cataclysm Class monster. He doesn’t even need to attack to show how superior he is compared to me, and to make matters worse, he’s a Type 5, so if he starts using magic, everything will get worse.
"Oh? You moved? You really moved this gun?" He says, surprised. I don’t know where the sound comes from, as his face has no face, and I don’t see a mouth anywhere. He has a male voice like a high school student.
"Hahaha, your resilience is disturbing. Even so terrified, you managed to keep the gun barrel following my head," he says in an amused tone, as if he’s enjoying all of this.
"You’re the first magical girl who is so weak, but can still move," he says, raising his sword.
"It’s a pity you won’t have time to mature and give me a good challenge, either in battle or in bed," he prepares to swing the sword and kill me, but we hear footsteps, and that distracts him, making him divert his gaze.
BANG CRACK
In the same instant, I finally pull the trigger. A shot of energy so powerful is fired that I am thrown away, due to the angle and inclination, my body rises, piercing walls and metal beams, being thrown for dozens of blocks until finally landing in a building on the other side of the city.
Because of the monster’s delay in evaluating me, my hesitation, and the time I spent charging the shot even more, I was launched very far away. But as if physics didn’t matter, I see him.
I’m lying on the ground, but I can see him taking calm steps. He literally covered the distance of almost half a city in a single instant.
I look at my hands, my fingers trembling from the impact, while the sniper fell somewhere and dissipated since I’m too far away. My hands and arms are almost broken.
The shot was ridiculously stronger than I could handle. I guess this is what happens when I fill my gun with so much magic. It’s good to know my gun doesn’t have a limit on how much magic I can charge at once.
’I just need to last a few minutes.’ I get up, grabbing my pistol in one hand.
"Nice shot, little girl," the monster says, approaching as I see a single drop of blood dripping from his face. All that firepower, and all I managed to do was a tiny scratch on his face with a shot that practically hit him dead-on.
’Tsk...surviving this will be difficult.’ I’m going to take a beating, there’s no denying it. I’ll take a beating now. I can only hope to get out alive. If I die without it being suicide, the time probably won’t go back. I need to be careful or it’s permanent death for me.
