Chapter 357: Your Friend’s Name?
(Author’s POV)
"What’s with the barrage of allegations towards my brother, huhh? What did Alaric do to get such an earful?" Brave Everests queried. "And~ .... You kept on mentioning your other friend? What has happened? Care to tell?"
He posed question after question, making Yelena feel like a deer caught in the headlights. Stiffened by his words, she lowered her gaze, finding the crown on the nurse’s scalp, who was busy cleaning and dressing her wound, interesting.
She didn’t know what or how to give him an answer without mentioning anything about Myra. In the heat of the moment, she had blabbered too much. Now, she was like a spider trapped in its own web.
Yelena tried to take a glimpse at his facial expression, but when she lifted her chin a fraction of an inch, the guy was already looking straight at her, his gaze unreadable. Arching his right brow, he added casually, "I remember you were being quite talkative earlier. What now~ ... cat got your tongue or something~ ... hmm?"
"M~ ... Mr.~ ... Mr. Everests, it was~ ...." She started, nervousness screaming out of her every being. She tried to make up some words, any excuse, any reason.
"It’s Brave," he voiced indifferently. "Uhh~?" Yelena gave him a look full of puzzlement as he repeated, "It is not Mr. Everests but ... Brave."
She moistened her lips and nodded tentatively. A bulb lit up in her head as she mumbled, "Actually~ .... umm~ .... What happened is that~ .... Mr. Alaric~ .... he came to visit our university today. My~ ... my friend ... she was tasked to accompany him to show him around the campus. But~ .... she hadn’t returned home yet. So, I~"
"So, you accused my brother of doing something to her? Only because of that?" Brave was bewildered by her vague reasoning. "Hehh~ ... you know that makes no sense for your outburst. What are you trying to hide? Out with it."
Caught by his sharp observation, Yelena pressed her lips in a thin line. Then, clasping her hands together, she continued, "Actually .... The college forum was full of malicious comments aiming towards my friend. So~ .... I got a bit too emotionally charged." Her voice faded at the end.
Brave gave her a skeptical look. Finding that this was the perfect time, she asked, "Umm~ .... can you~ .... ask your brother about her?" She finally said, her voice came out more like a plea. He remained mum for a brief second.
Yelena thought he was going to decline, but he took out his phone and dialled Alaric’s number straightaway.
He could have chosen to mindlink, but he knew Alaric, despite being blessed with the strength equivalent to a ton of elephants, had exerted a lot of energy while rescuing Jacob, plus he was badly injured, he had noticed. So, it was safer to make a call. After a series of ringing, the call connected as Alaric’s gravelly, exhaustion filled voice echoed from the other end, "Yeah~ Rave."
"Al, how’s the situation at your end?" Brave asked, his voice muffled as he gave a glance towards the girl sitting meekly in front of him. She quickly averted her gaze.
Alaric didn’t say anything for the first few seconds. Then he exhaled a weary sigh and spoke, "Chris Shadow had driven us to the Larson Mansion. He had already informed the Blood Fangs Clan medical team. The Clan doctors are examining him in his room right now. I am in a separate room waiting for the ."
Brave nodded, "And what about your hand? How’s it now?" he inquired with a hint of concern.
"What about it?" Alaric countered back as he took a look at his free hand.
Because of all the mayhem, he hadn’t realized that his palm, with the silver dagger induced mark, was painted with blood. When he was dismantling the kelps with his bare, bleeding hands, a few salmon fish and a catfish were attracted by that exotic scent and started attacking him already leaking hand. As his focus was entirely on getting Jacob out of the mess, he hadn’t noticed that the catfish had sunk its teeth into his scarred hand.
Normally, for a werewolf, an injury like that shouldn’t have been serious and even would have healed by now, but this one didn’t.
Alaric traced his injury with his other hand and lied, his voice nonchalant, "Just a scratch. Already healed up."
"Umm~ ..." Brave hummed. Then he finally asked, "Al~ .... Umm~ .... Actually, I want to ask you something about someone."
"What is it? Why do you sound so off? What’s with the formal tone, Rave?" Alaric questioned. "Ask away."
"There is a girl~ .... What did you say your name was?" Brave turned his attention back to Yelena as he covered his phone with his hand.
’How funny. You have been talking and teasing her, but forgot to ask her name,’ Raw remarked inside his head.
"Yelena," she replied quickly.
"And your friend’s name~ ....?" He added.
"My~ .... mmm~ ..." Yelena held her tongue just in time as she corrected herself, "You can just say that the girl who guided him to the campus. He might not know her name yet, but he will definitely recall her."
Brave gave her a peculiar look, then quoted Yelena’s words and told Alaric the same.
Alaric instantly knew who he was asking about. He took a pause, recalling his call with Elio regarding the same thing. After a quick flashback, he said, "Tell her friend that she is safe and alright."
"Uhhh?" Brave was expecting a rather different answer from him.
After all, Alaric didn’t care much about people other than his own pack members. And if a female were involved, then there would be even more reason for him to be apathetic. Plus, a human female at that.
This particular combination would have made Alaric disinterested, but the way he replied told a different story.
"What did he say?" Yelena’s ears perked up as she anticipated Brave’s words.
"He said~ .... Your friend~ .... she is safe and alright," Brave conveyed, his tone sounded off. He was really confused at the moment.
Hearing his words, Yelena breathed a sigh of relief and then asked, "Ask him where she~ ...."
"Ohh~ ... there you are, Brother," Nora’s melodic voice came from the door as Yelena sealed her lips and lowered her head. "I have been looking for you," she entered.
"We were just done here," Brave said and got up. He then mumbled, "Al~ .... I will talk to you in a bit," and disconnected the call.
By this time, the nurse was done patching up her wound. She gave a few instructions as Yelena nodded like an obedient child. After that, they all walked outside the room one after another.
Brave and Nora walked beside each other as Yelena kept a two meter distance from them, walking ahead of them. Then she halted her steps abruptly and mumbled, her head lowered, her voice muffled, as she bowed, "Thank you for your timely help, Mr. Everests, Ms. Everests. Thank you so much for saving Fabian’s life. You must be tired after such a long day. I will be staying with him. So, please feel free to return to your place."
Her intentions were clear. She wanted them out of the hospital, as it was getting difficult for her to keep up with the act. She didn’t even know the whole story about what exactly happened with Myra. But she was doing all this on instinct.
Nora, who was really weary, didn’t find anything odd with her statement, but her elder brother did. He narrowed his eyes and gazed at Yelena’s veiled face.
"Ohh~ ... okay," he replied. As soon as he said this, her rigid body visibly relaxed. The slight shift, Brave noticed that as well.
"Then~ ..." she quickly gave another bow, turned around hastily and started pacing up, without waiting for their response.
Brave’s eyes were glued to her receding figure as Nora called out, "Brother~ .... Shall we go?"
"Ummm~ ..." he hummed as they walked out of the hospital.
Yelena was keeping an eye on them, and when they were completely out of the hospital, she marched straight to the reception desk and said, "I need to make a call."
She quickly dialled Wendy’s number and from there got to know about Myra’s whereabouts. Wendy’s words made her feel like a heavy weight had lifted off her shoulders. Then Wendy fired a series of questions, "Why is your phone not reachable? I have been trying to call, but it kept showing~ .... Anyways~ .... Where are you right now, sis? Whose number is this?"
"My phone got hammered somehow and right now, I am~ .... I am at the hospital," Yelena answered.
"Hospital? Is Mr. Larson found? Is he~ .... Is he alive and well? Wendy asked nervously.
A sudden realization dawned on Yelena as she had totally forgotten about Jacob Larson. She remembered the relatively quiet seashore on her arrival. A drastic contrast to the one shown in the news articles and videos. ’How could that happen? It seemed like no accident took place there? But~ ...’ her mind was muddled with countless unanswered questions.
