Chapter 358: She Returned Home
(Author’s POV)
*Buzz .... Chime .... Buzz*
Wendy was fast asleep in her room after a very long and tiring day. Her deep slumber was disturbed by her phone’s continuous vibration. She peeked with one eye at the wall clock, which indicated it was around two in the morning.
"Who is calling me at this hour?" she mumbled to herself, her voice scratchy because of her dry throat. Nevertheless, she ended up picking the call.
From the other end, a forced whispering sound echoed, "Hello~ ... I am outside the house. Open the door for me."
Wendy knitted her brows together, checked the number, which was some unknown ten digits. With the same sore voice, she said, "You have dialled the wrong number." She was about to disconnect the call, but the other person spoke, their voice a bit louder than before, though it was still hushed, "Wendy~ .... It’s me, Myra. I am waiting at the door. Come down and open it."
"My~ ...~ra? Myra ... Si~s, sis?" As soon as she realized who it was, she sat up abruptly, jumped out of her bed, while replying, "Give me a second. I will be right there."
Still clutching her phone steadily, Wendy wore her Hello Kitty slippers haphazardly and went downstairs in a rush. When she passed by her parents’ room, her steps deliberately softened. She swiftly unlocked the gate and found Myra standing outside all alone.
It was dark outside as rain pitter pattered persistently, with the only light source being the street light. So, she didn’t notice her sister’s swollen face and puffy, slightly red, rimmed eyes; only her silhouette was outlined.
Yet Wendy could tell something was definitely up. After all, why would Myra return in the middle of the night?
They both stepped inside the house as Myra placed the brand new umbrella into the basket. The moment the main door closed behind them, they both heard a car’s engine roaring, and then all went quiet.
’So, she wasn’t alone. Someone came here to drop her off,’ Wendy thought internally and sighed. She has been gawking at her sister, waiting for her to say something, but Myra hadn’t breathed a single syllable. When she saw her heading upstairs, she silently walked into the kitchen and started preparing some Chamomile tea for Myra.
Myra dragged her still weakened body to her room. She didn’t feel like changing or anything and just wanted to take a nap. Things have been rough for her. But, although her clothes were all dry now, less than an hour ago, she had been doused in the heavy downpour. So, she eventually ended up going to the bathroom to freshen up.
After taking a hot shower, her face and complexion appeared significantly better than before. The puffiness under her eyes lessened as well. When she took a step outside, Wendy was already sitting on her bed, a golden and pale yellow steaming cup of tea sitting right on the bedside table. With a groggy voice, she spoke, "Wendy~ ... why are you here? Not feeling sleepy?"
"Umhmm~ ..." Wendy shook her head, "I was waiting for you, sis." She looked at Myra in anticipation, thinking she would finally reveal what was going on. But when she observed that her sister wasn’t going to say anything, she couldn’t help herself and fired questions like a rapid shooting pistol, "Sis, tell me, what’s going on? Weren’t you at your classmate Shelly’s place? Why did you return so abruptly in such heavy rain? Who dropped you here? Whose phone number was it?"
Myra moistened her lips as she let Wendy speak. She was well aware of her sister’s personality. Of course, anyone would be curious as well as worried to see her come back at this time. She understood that very well.
She walked towards the window to close it as she started, "After getting the news from you about Chairman Larson, I went to the location of the crash. Shelly’s~ .... brother .... took me there."
"Ohh~ .... You went there? So~ ..." Wendy paused, as she gulped her saliva down and added, "Is Chairman Larson~ .... really?"
"No~ .... Chairman Larson~ ... he is still alive, but~ .... in severely critical condition," Myra spun around and told her.
"But why are the news channels and media articles still claiming that he is~ ...." Wendy questioned again. Then she answered her own words, "Ohhh~ .... did someone intentionally do something to the plane to harm Chairman Larson? Like those web series and movies?"
Even Myra couldn’t tell the answer to that. She just recalled what Dion had told her.
Myra settled on the bed beside Wendy and took a sip of the warm liquid, relaxing gradually. Apart from the chicken soup, which she reluctantly drank earlier, she hasn’t had anything all day.
After finishing her tea, she said, "Wendy, it’s already late. You should go and sleep too. Otherwise, Yelena would be disturbed by our talking."
"Sis Yel. She isn’t at home," Wendy told her. "She called me from a landline number around eleven or eleven thirty, saying that she was at a hospital and her phone is cracked, which is why no call is going through."
"What? Hospital? Why?" Myra’s voice was dripping with nervous anxiety.
"Before I could ask that, the call was ended. But when she departed, she told me that her grandfather and Chairman Larson are good acquaintances. So, she must be there," Wendy mumbled. That was the only reason she could think of.
"Are you sure? She isn’t hurt, right? What was the number? Let’s call back," Myra said. Throughout the day, there has been one mess after another.
On her sister’s suggestion, Wendy went to her call logs and dialled back the number, putting the phone on speaker. Once the call was connected, a polite and professional voice came from the other end, "Hello, this is Hope Hospital."
"Hello~ ...." Myra mumbled, "Is there a patient named Yelena~ .... Yelena Yates there?"
"Ma’am~ .... Without a satisfactory reason, we cannot give any information regarding our patients," the receptionist conveyed the hospital regulations.
"But she called from this number at around eleven thirty. Ma’am~ .... Please help me here. Her family lives overseas, and we are her housemates. We are just like her family. Can you please look for her in your records?" Wendy jumped in, voicing in her most pitiful tone.
There was silence from the other end, and then a sigh came, "I have checked the system. There is no one with this name in her hospital."
Myra and Wendy both heaved a massive sigh of relief. The staff mumbled, "Then~ ..." and before they could ask anything else, ended the call.
Now, only one conclusion remained in their minds. Yelena must be at the hospital because of Jacob Larson. Myra wanted to go there as well, but neither of them had a vehicle, nor did she have any strength left in her body.
’Fabian must be there as well. He is a close aide of Mr. Larson. He would surely take care of Yelena. I will go to the hospital in the morning to check things out,’ Myra thought.
She settled underneath the covers as Wendy walked out of her room after closing the light, "Good night, sis."
"Good night," Myra replied. Immediately as the door shut, Myra exhaled a burdensome sigh, reminiscing about what had happened with Dion.
The moment Anya, Dion’s aide, came back with the car, they wasted no time, hopped in and drove back to Esteria. Their long drive was significantly cut down by Dion’s exceptional driving skills. That guy turned out to be a monster behind the wheel, a total pro, covering the long journey in only one and a half hours with no mishap or slip ups.
After arriving in Esteria, Dion straightaway gave a call to Alaric. From the other end, Alaric gave him a rundown on what had happened. Omitting about Fabian’s fall.
’Ask about mate,’ Alex murmured inside his head. "Ask him. How is she? Did she go home? Ask him, Al,’ He was urging Alaric repeatedly.
Reluctantly, Alaric did ask, "Where have you been, Dio? Were you with~ .... Her? How is she?"
Dion hummed in response as he peeked a glance at soaked up Myra, "She’s fine. I am going to drop her at her house." The two of them were at the now desolated crash location. When they had just arrived, Myra jumped out of the car and started looking for any sign of a crash. In that process, she was completely drenched from top to bottom. Thankfully, Dion stopped her in time, placed an umbrella over her head and walked her back to the vehicle. After settling her, he told her that he would ask about the situation, turned up the heating and then went to make the call.
Alaric didn’t ask anything more and just told him, his tone matter of factly, "Brave has already arrived with~ .... Nora."
"Nor is in Esteria?" his voice came out loud. He was taken aback
