Chapter 225: 224: Missing You Becomes a River
Ye Lingran froze for a moment, staring at the long, slender hand pressing down on the back of her hand. The palm was still cool, seeping into the surface layer of her skin, making her cheeks blush even more. Moreover, when she interacted with Yun Qi before, Yun Qi always called her ’Miss Ye’ in a polite and gentlemanly manner, never calling her by her name, let alone so intimately calling her by her single name. Out of the blue, she was stunned there, completely forgetting to react.
Jack saw the large hand covering Ye Lingran’s fair jade-like hand and the slightly darkened handsome face with furrowed brows. He seemed to understand something, so he quickly smiled and said, "I was being abrupt, very abrupt. I hope Miss Ye can forgive me. I’m used to dealing with some men regularly and lost my manners for a moment. I’m terribly sorry. If Miss Ye doesn’t have a good alcohol tolerance, please don’t feel pressured. I will drink this cup first to show my respect, and Miss Ye can just enjoy some of the dishes and try the specialties here in Milan to see if they suit your taste."
Ye Lingran finally came back to her senses, smiled at Jack, and simply said, "Director Jack is being too polite."
Yun Qi took another look at Ye Lingran, and only after a fleeting moment did he notice his hand was still on the back of her hand. Flustered, he quickly withdrew his hand and said softly, "Sorry, Miss Ye..."
Ye Lingran, hearing this, turned to look at him, shook her head, released the glass, and placed one hand under the other, "It’s okay, I should thank President Yun for helping me with the drink."
Yun Qi pressed his lips together and didn’t respond, simply turning his gaze away. After that, they had no further interactions.
"Thank you, Ling Ran!" Once everyone’s attention shifted away from them, Cen Jin leaned over to Ye Lingran, looked at her gratefully, and whispered.
Ye Lingran turned back to look, smiled, and said, "It’s nothing, we are like family. Besides, I know you really can’t handle alcohol; it’s no big deal."
"Are you okay, though?"
"I’m fine."
"Really?" Looking at her flushed cheeks, Cen Jin was deeply worried!
"Yes, I’m fine."
"But I think looking at Sara’s expression, she seems to want to stir up trouble here; she looks eager to try." Cen Jin casually nudged Ye Lingran, her eyes inadvertently glancing over to Sara, who looked ready to speak up and cause trouble but was hindered by others discussing serious matters, finding no opportunity to interject.
They had a previous feud, and with Sara’s ambition, she was surely targeting them. Drinking at the dinner table and toasting each other was inevitable; they couldn’t find fault with it, as long as Sara knew her limits, they really couldn’t say anything.
Now knowing the two of them have low alcohol tolerance, Sara certainly would seize on this, aiming directly at them.
"It doesn’t matter, you forgot? We still have the feisty Yun Xi on our side. When Jack pulled that stunt earlier, Yun Xi looked like she had held back for a long time."
Cen Jin glanced at Yun Xi, seeing her small face looking downtrodden, appearing somewhat lazy and indifferent, yet her eyes revealed an undisguised anger and dislike. When people talked to her, she would respond with a couple of stiff smiles, resembling an emotionless conversational machine.
Halfway through the meal, Sara finally found a chance to interject. As Cen Jin expected, the conversation turned to Ye Lingran and Cen Jin. Sara had a good eye for the situation; she knew Yun Xi and Yun Qi were cousins within the Yun Family, making people from the Yun Group hard to mess with. Besides, Yun Xi didn’t seem easy to bully, even carrying a bit of a spoiled demeanor, and apparently a good drinker. Targeting her could be counterproductive, ultimately leading to suppression by Yun Qi, so she aimed directly at Cen Jin and Ye Lingran instead.
During their collaboration, they had looked over Cen Jin and Ye Lingran’s profiles - just two independent studio girls, with nothing substantial to rely on. Bullying them wouldn’t be excessive.
Just as she raised her glass towards Cen Jin, coincidentally Cen Jin’s phone in her bag rang. Cen Jin instinctively raised her eyebrows, apologized to Sara, and then took out her phone. Seeing the word ’husband’ on the caller display, her eyes softened and became sweet, her smile even more pronounced as she said to everyone, "Sorry, I need to take this call."
After the host nodded in consent with a smile, Cen Jin left the room with her phone and answered it, her voice noticeably softer and more tender than before, "Hey! The timing of your call is perfect."
"Hmm? What are you doing?" Jiang Baizhou replied lightly, with a hint of confusion and curiosity.
"Having dinner with the organizers here in Milan! They were just talking about drinking when you called." Cen Jin leaned against the hallway wall, smiling as she spoke.
"Did you drink?"
"No, I’m well aware of my own limited tolerance, I wouldn’t embarrass myself abroad, would I?" Cen Jin replied confidently, smiling brightly before asking, "Did you call for something?"
"Yeah, there is."
"What is it?"
"I miss you."
Cen Jin was taken aback by his words, her face beaming with even more blissful sweetness, "Hehe, I miss you too! It’s still morning over there, right?"
"Yes."
"Have you had breakfast yet?"
"No, just got up." Jiang Baizhou’s voice was deep and slightly hoarse, indeed sounding like he had just woken up.
"Did you see the WeChat message I sent you?"
"Yeah, I saw it." Jiang Baizhou replied casually, his gaze inadvertently swept over the soft big bed where he usually saw her graceful figure; something essential seemed to be missing.
She had only left for a day, and he already felt overwhelmed with longing. How was he going to endure the rest of the week?
"Are there many appointments with patients today?"
"Not many."
"Any classes at the school?"
"Yes, there are."
"Aren’t you in a hurry now?"
"No, I’m not."
"Then chat with me a bit longer! Just to help me dodge the drinking situation."
"Okay."
Later, Cen Jin and Jiang Baizhou chatted about many things, including how much she missed him during breakfast and wanting to share the beautiful scenery with him. They talked for over twenty minutes.
Inside, since Cen Jin left to take the call, Sara directed her attention to Ye Lingran. Ye Lingran was very composed and calm, but before she could even respond, Yun Xi jumped in, giving Sara no face at all. Her words were sharp, leaving Sara speechless, and on the contrary, Yun Xi managed to get Sara to drink five or six glasses instead.
