Chapter 13: The Evil Dragon Smiles Gleefully
Downstairs in the apartment complex.
The rising sun had just begun to peek out, casting an orange-yellow glow on the eastern horizon.
After a night of heavy rain, the streets were clean and fresh, with a faint scent of earth and grass in the air.
Xia Li lived in an older apartment complex with relatively well-developed amenities. Even at six in the morning, there were already food carts waiting outside.
It was a weekday, and the streets were mostly filled with students carrying backpacks, with only a few early-rising office workers.
Lucia, beside Xia Li, marveled at the hustle and bustle of the human metropolis.
She looked around with her head held high, curious as to why the humans here woke up so early.
“…Because most people have their own missions to fulfill. Some are still in school, while others need to go out to work and earn money.”
Xia Li couldn’t easily explain the workings of the human world to this silly dragon. It would be too complicated, and she might not even understand.
“So what’s your mission?” Lucia tilted her head and asked.
Xia Li was taken aback by the question.
Since graduating in June, Xia Li had been in a state of unemployment. His major was Chinese Language and Literature, and graduates in this field generally had two career paths: becoming a teacher or taking the civil service exam, or doing a job completely unrelated to their major.
Xia Li didn’t want to live a life of sitting in an office every day, so he chose the latter.
The result was… a complete lack of direction in life.
However, this was only temporary. Xia Li planned to allow himself to be lost for a while, learning about new media or finding temporary jobs, just to gain some social experience. Mrs. Fang and Old Xia both supported this decision.
Therefore, Xia Li’s current label was indeed that of an unemployed vagrant, a fringe member of society…
But he couldn’t just say that, could he?
So Xia Li changed his perspective and said seriously,
“My mission is to suppress you.”
Lucia nodded slightly, agreeing with his statement. “As expected of the Brave Hero, your mission is truly great.”
“Boss, I’ll take three meat buns… actually, make it six. Six meat buns, two tea eggs, and two cups of soy milk.”
Xia Li left Lucia at the street corner and walked over to the breakfast stall, calling out his order.
The owner of this breakfast stall was an old acquaintance of Xia Li’s. He had basically eaten breakfast here throughout his entire university life.
The slightly chubby owner deftly picked up the buns. Turning around and seeing Xia Li, he smiled, then paused upon noticing the young girl behind him.
“Haven’t seen you for a few days… got a girlfriend?” The fat boss’s eyes would crinkle into a slit whenever he smiled.
The owner of this breakfast stall was not only kind-faced, but also a good person. When he wasn’t busy, he would chat with Xia Li about random things. Sometimes, if Xia Li arrived late, he would give him the leftovers from the pot.
“Went on a trip a few days ago, just got back.”
Xia Li chuckled awkwardly. To cover his embarrassment, he chose to nod in agreement.
In this situation, the more he explained, the worse it would get.
Lucia had come out of his house with him, and it was still early in the morning. It was obvious that they had spent the night together.
“A college classmate? She looks quite young.”
The fat boss’s tone was tactful. He really wanted to ask if Xia Li’s girlfriend was of age, but he felt it would be rude to ask.
However, she did look very young, at least a bit younger than Xia Li, and quite short too, probably under 1.6 meters tall. She had a standard oval face with round almond eyes, giving her a delicate and pretty appearance. She was the type of lively and innocent young girl.
“Yeah… Uncle, I’ve paid you by scanning the code. You go ahead and get busy, I’ll take her for a walk.”
Xia Li had no intention of continuing the conversation with the fat boss. He let out a dry laugh and left with the breakfast in hand.
“Is that human also one of those great humans?”
As agreed yesterday, Lucia would absolutely not run around or speak on her own initiative.
Xia Li told her to stand, so she obediently stood there waiting, just like a puppy left by its owner on the curb.
Only when Xia Li approached did she raise her head and ask the question in her mind.
“No… just an acquaintance I deal with often.”
Xia Li opened the steaming buns in his hand. Considering the evil dragon’s habit of inhaling food, he decided to let them cool down a bit before giving them to Lucia, lest she burn herself.
“But I feel like you’re quite afraid of him.” Lucia glanced back and then at Xia Li.
Why did it feel like Xia Li was afraid of everyone…
Clearly, Brave Heroes held a high status among humans, even considered to be second only to the ruler.
Why was it that in this place called “Earth,” they became so ordinary?
“You don’t understand, it’s called being polite.”
Xia Li held out the bun torn in half and added, “Similarly, this is also one of the survival skills in this life. You don’t need to learn this yet. I’ll teach you when you’ve mastered the basics.
Try it.”
◈◈◈
Actually, at this point, Lucia had completely stopped listening to the first half of Xia Li’s sentence.
Her brain only received one command: Taste.
So, without any hesitation, Lucia leaned forward and snatched the food from Xia Li’s hand with her mouth.
The meat buns from this breakfast stall were quite large, each the size of Xia Li’s palm.
Even though it was torn in half, the bun was still enough to fill Lucia’s dragon mouth.
Lucia couldn’t swallow it in one bite, and the meat filling scattered like beads, falling down. She used her hands to catch them while shaking her head, flustered and clumsy.
Xia Li ate slowly and gracefully, watching her silently.
Lucia was wearing the same oversized turtleneck shirt as yesterday, making her whole body look empty. The cuffs were so long that they covered the back of her hands.
Her fingers could barely poke out from the sleeves, and her shoulders were drooping loosely.
Although it was a shirt, it looked like a dress on Lucia.
Watching this scene, Xia Li couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like when Lucia regained her original form and could truly fill out this shirt.
That tall, voluptuous Lucia with sharp eyes and a heroic spirit…
Oh right, she also had the silver-white hair and crimson eyes that a pureblood silver dragon should have.
Compared to the short radish in front of him now, the Silver Dragon Queen Lucia in Xia Li’s memory was far more impressive.
“Delicious!”
Lucia’s eyes lit up. After devouring the bun in a whirlwind, she stretched out her hands from her sleeves and held them out in front of Xia Li, looking like a devout believer begging for food in a holy church.
Xia Li placed another half of a bun in her palm.
“Lucia, I’m curious about something.”
“Ask away!”
Lucia giggled, mumbled a response, and stuffed most of the bun into her mouth.
Xia Li was right, the food on Earth was indeed delicious. This white, chubby thing tasted savory and flavorful, even better than the roasted meat she had eaten!
“How old are you?”
“Hmm, hmm?”
Lucia was puzzled. To avoid any misunderstanding, Xia Li quickly added,
“I mean your age.”
Lucia hesitated for a moment, but decided not to lie: “Dragons reach adulthood at a hundred years old. I just turned a hundred this year.
Oh, if you convert it to human age, that would be… just eighteen years old~”
Xia Li listened silently and broke off another half of the bun, placing it in Lucia’s hand.
“You became Queen at such a young age?” Xia Li asked.
“Queen?” Lucia still found this title amusing.
“Hey, isn’t that just a nickname you humans gave me?
Queen or not, I’m just a pureblood. The strength of a dragon is determined by the purity of its bloodline. The purer the bloodline, the stronger the dragon, and the more uniform the color of its scales. Like those dragons with mixed-colored scales you’ve seen, they’re much weaker.
And I’m a pure silver dragon, without a single mixed scale on my body, so from the moment I was born, you’ve been calling me Queen, Queen, Queen.”
Lucia chewed on the bun. If she could, she would love to show Xia Li her beautiful dragon scales right now.
It was a pity that none of her scales were left. Thinking about it made her feel a bit sad.
“So, you’re not actually a Queen, and you don’t have any subjects, you’ve always been alone?”
As a dragon slayer, Xia Li was naturally aware of what Lucia said about the dragon’s strength classification.
He had always thought that the Silver Dragon Queen was the ruler of a dragon clan, and that even if she was far away from her clan, she could still command them with a single call.
But their interactions over the past two days made Xia Li feel that Lucia was actually very lonely.
She was used to sleeping alone, and even the heaviest rain wouldn’t wake her up, because there was no one in her heart to worry about.
“Yes, I’ve always been alone… or rather, a lone dragon.”
Lucia didn’t understand why Xia Li brought this up. On Azure Continent, only weak dragons chose to live in groups. Pureblood silver dragons like her, once they gained the ability to fly, would become self-sufficient and live independently. It was their nature.
After speaking, Lucia thought for a moment and felt that her words needed to be supplemented, so she smiled softly.
“But it’s different now.
Now, I have you by my side… Brave Hero.”
