Chapter 23: Master Danyang
No one knew how much time had passed when the quiet inside the room was broken by the sound of a door opening.
Cheung Kam-Keung, who walked into the house, thought that his wife was sleeping, so he made no noise.
He tiptoed through the living room, but the moment he entered the bedroom, he sensed that something was wrong. Reaching out, he turned on the light.
The sight of the mess all over the floor gave Cheung Kam-Keung a fright.
Looking again, he saw his wife, Siu Lan, lying on the bed with her eyes tightly shut, seemingly no longer breathing. Cheung Kam-Keung’s heart stopped. He rushed to her bedside in panic.
“Ah Lan! Ah Lan! What’s wrong with you?!”
Under his frantic shaking, Siu Lan—whose face was pale without a trace of blood—slowly regained consciousness. She grabbed Cheung Kam-Keung’s arm, eyes wide with terror, and stammered incoherently, “Ghosts! There are ghosts! The ghosts came! They want to harm me! They want to harm our child!”
“Ghosts?!”
Cheung Kam-Keung’s heart tightened as he instinctively looked around the chaotic room.
After all he had seen, that one word now struck him harder than anything.
“It’s true! There were ghosts!” Siu Lan’s terrified fingers dug deeply into Cheung Kam-Keung’s arm. “I really saw them! So many ghosts! They want to harm our child!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect our child.” Cheung Kam-Keung gently caressed Siu Lan’s haggard face, soothing her trembling emotions.
Once she had calmed down a little, he laid her back on the bed, then went to the living room and directly called Master Danyang.
Something like this required a professional.
Now that it had happened, he couldn’t wait until tomorrow.
The call was quickly answered.
After hearing Cheung Kam-Keung’s account, Master Danyang immediately grasped the seriousness of the situation and said that he would come right away.
The two of them didn’t live far apart.
Barely twenty minutes later, Master Danyang arrived downstairs.
He looked to be in his thirties, his face thin and sharp, his gaze deep. Dressed neatly in a fitted suit, he looked nothing like a Feng Shui master.
After greeting him, Cheung Kam-Keung carefully recounted everything that had just happened.
Master Danyang listened silently.
As soon as he entered Cheung Kam-Keung’s home, he casually glanced around at the layout, his expression thoughtful.
When he saw the arrangement of the furniture, his brow furrowed—but he said nothing for now.
Upon entering the bedroom and seeing Siu Lan, Master Danyang’s expression suddenly changed.
“What strong yin energy!”
He strode quickly to her bedside, lifted her eyelids for a look, then closed his eyes.
Extending his right hand, he pressed his thumb against his middle and ring fingers, and with his index and little fingers, he touched Siu Lan’s forehead.
The powerful resentment and yin energy he sensed made Master Danyang tremble uncontrollably.
The expression on his face grew heavier by the second.
“What’s wrong with Ah Lan?” Cheung Kam-Keung asked anxiously.
“She’s possessed by a vengeful ghost.”
Sweat beading on his forehead, Master Danyang opened his eyes and swiftly pulled a bagua pendant from his chest, pressing it against Siu Lan’s forehead.
The unconscious Siu Lan suddenly let out a piercing scream and began to thrash in pain.
“Hold her down!” Master Danyang shouted.
Before Cheung Kam-Keung could react, Master Danyang’s face changed dramatically.
A powerful backlash surged up his arm, forcing him several steps backward.
Two incomplete, faintly translucent ghosts, along with a wisp of fog, burst out from Siu Lan’s body.
She immediately settled down, falling into a calm state.
Master Danyang hid his trembling right hand behind his back, staring at those two ghosts warily.
Such strong resentment...
Without any preparation, a single mistake could cost him dearly.
But the two evil ghosts did not attack; instead, they drifted toward the door and slipped into a bag resting there.
Holding the bag was Li Zhen, whose face looked terrible.
He had already been in poor condition, and after witnessing what had just unfolded, realizing that things had not gone as he expected, his mood darkened further.
Especially when he sensed that the two ghosts he had summoned back were now weakened, his anger worsened.
It was written plainly across his face.
Master Danyang did not relax at the disappearance of the ghosts—if anything, he grew more alert.
His gaze shifted from the bag Li Zhen was holding, up to the red-eyed bat on Li Zhen’s chest, and finally to his face.
“Head-Descending Curse? Who are you? Why are you harming others?”
Master Danyang’s right hand clenched tightly around the pendant behind his back, while his left slipped into his suit pocket, gripping a sigil.
“Wait! It’s a misunderstanding! Master Danyang…”
The voice came first, followed by Fatty Wong, panting heavily as he ran inside.
Hearing Master Danyang’s words and seeing the tense scene, he instantly understood what had happened.
Just looking at Master Li’s appearance, who would think he was a righteous man?
He quickly explained, “We weren’t trying to harm her—we were trying to save her! She… she’s been targeted by something unclean inside the building!”
“Oh? And what do you mean by that?” Master Danyang frowned, looking toward Fatty Wong.
Cheung Kam-Keung objected, “Impossible! My wife never even went to that building. How could she be targeted by a ghost?!”
Fatty Wong licked his lips and explained, “Even if she never went there, she could still be targeted!”
“Think about it—weren’t you always unlucky before? Couldn’t find a job? Until, by chance, you became a security guard at that building? Ah Keung, do you think all that was coincidence?”
After roughly repeating what Li Zhen had said, he continued, “Master Danyang said your birth date is special—but the reason the evil spirit didn’t possess you was because it had already targeted your son. It… it wants to be reborn through your wife’s womb!”
Master Danyang’s heart gave a jolt as his earlier doubts resurfaced—
Why had the evil ghost, which should have easily possessed the yin-born Cheung Kam-Keung, not done so?
When he heard that Siu Lan was pregnant, he had already felt something was wrong.
Now Fatty Wong’s words struck him like a bell.
Master Danyang withdrew his hand from his pocket and pressed it against Siu Lan’s abdomen.
Cheung Kam-Keung asked nervously, “Master, how is it? My child…”
Master Danyang said solemnly, “It’s unclear for now. Whether it’s true still needs to be verified.”
The fact that he didn’t deny it outright meant he believed the possibility was high.
Cheung Kam-Keung pleaded, “Master, please, you must help me!”
“Don’t worry.” Master Danyang withdrew his hand and turned toward Li Zhen. “You intended to use the Head-Descending Curse on her, forcing the spirit that seeks rebirth to bear your curse instead?”
“That method is clever—but have you considered how dangerous it is? If you lose control, it could cost two lives at once.”
He still regarded Li Zhen with deep suspicion.
No practitioner of Head-Descending Curses was easy to deal with.
Constantly dealing with ghosts and sinister arts, such practitioners were volatile and unpredictable—dangerous as scorpions in the dark.
Just like the man before him, whose aura was steeped in wicked energy and whose actions were always extreme.
