Chapter 33: One Last Fleece Before Leaving
Life and death on the same path, death and life as one...
It sounded simple enough, but how difficult was it to truly reach such a realm?
At least, Li Zhen could not.
Whether it was the Left Path or demonic ways, for now, he only wanted to live longer.
As for what consequences might come later—he would deal with them when the time came.
With a sigh, Li Zhen walked out of Master Danyang’s residence after finishing all the necessary instructions.
The “Spirit Preservation Technique” would need to wait for Master Danyang to copy out by hand.
The blood, however, would have to be drawn by someone Li Zhen found himself.
Fatty wasn’t interested in the esoteric talk between Li Zhen and Master Danyang; he had been wandering about near the master’s home instead.
This place was backed by mountains and faced the sea, the scenery rather pleasant.
Seeing Li Zhen come out, Fatty quickly jogged over to him.
“These are for you.” Li Zhen took out several yellow talismans and handed them to Fatty. “If you ever encounter something strange again, stick a few of these talismans on it. If that still doesn’t solve the problem, go find Master Danyang.”
Hearing that, Fatty sensed the underlying meaning and hurriedly asked, “Master, are you leaving?”
“I’ll be leaving very soon.”
“Master, could you leave me your contact information? If I run into trouble again, I can reach you immediately. If it weren’t for you this time, I’d be dead already.”
“Even if I left you a way to contact me, it wouldn’t help. If fate allows, we’ll meet again.”
“Is the place you’re going very far away?”
“Extremely far. Your problem has already been resolved; for now, you won’t face anything else. If something strange happens again in the future, you can go find Master Danyang.”
Still shaken, Fatty said, “I’ve already quit my job—I’ll never go back to that building again. I shouldn’t be unlucky enough to run into something like that twice, right?”
Li Zhen smiled. “I took quite a lot from Master Danyang, and he indirectly helped you too. Your coworker doesn’t seem to have much money now. After I leave, you should bring some money over to Master Danyang.”
Fatty nodded repeatedly. “I understand. You’ve got to keep good relations with someone as powerful as Master Danyang.”
The two returned to Fatty’s home.
When Li Zhen asked Fatty to help him find someone to draw Master Danyang’s blood, Fatty readily agreed and was about to head out right away.
Just then, the phone at home suddenly rang.
Fatty hurried to answer it.
After a while, he hung up, turned to Li Zhen, and said, “They found the corpse at the cemetery dug up this morning. They notified the family first, and now the police have started investigating the matter.”
“This is my fault. I should’ve gone at night to bury the corpse again, but I was too scared to go alone…”
“The corpse?” Li Zhen suddenly thought of something.
Fatty said, “It’s been taken back to the funeral home. A few of my coworkers asked me to go take a look with them. I don’t know if this will get traced back to me…”
“For no reason, it won’t,” Li Zhen replied. “Since the body’s still there, let’s have them make another contribution.”
“I did help them a big deal; they shouldn’t hold it against me.”
Fatty looked at Li Zhen, waiting for his next instruction.
After listening, though looking somewhat troubled, Fatty still went out immediately.
About three or four hours later, he came back home carrying a pile of items.
Among them were Master Danyang’s handwritten “Spirit Preservation Technique” and a bag of fresh blood newly drawn from the master.
Considering that Master Danyang had just held a ritual and fought with an evil spirit, Li Zhen didn’t take much of his blood.
The bag held only the minimum amount for a standard adult blood donation.
Aside from that were various miscellaneous items for testing which could be brought back—including, most notably, a crossbow.
All were things Fatty had been sent to buy.
After introducing each item, Fatty finally pulled out a small plastic container filled with murky, viscous liquid.
Even with the lid sealed tight, the strange, pungent odor still leaked through.
Pinching his nose and turning his head away, Fatty said, “Master, it was hard finding the chance to do this. I followed your instructions—heated it with a candle…”
Expression unchanged, Li Zhen accepted the small box and carefully tucked it into his briefcase.
This trip had been quite fruitful…
After packing up and taking along the slumbering Red-Eyed Bat, Li Zhen formally bid farewell to Fatty.
He walked out of Fatty’s house, went to a secluded corner, and quietly murmured, “Return.”
Just like last time, everything around him froze, then distorted, and finally dissolved into nothingness.
Lines of golden text appeared before Li Zhen’s eyes.
【You successfully prevented the Evil Spirit from reincarnating through possession, protected Fatty, indirectly saved the other security guards who would have died by the Evil Spirit’s hand, and uncovered the cause and truth of the incident, killing the Evil Spirit behind it all.】
【Congratulations, you have obtained five Evil-Repelling Talismans from List of the Ferocious, personally drawn by Master Danyang. These talismans can repel and banish evil spirits.】
【Congratulations, you have obtained the Maoshan Spirit Visualization Technique from List of the Ferocious. This technique focuses on preserving one’s divine form and spirit-traveling through the Upper Purity, capable of cultivating the primordial spirit.】
【Congratulations, you have obtained a portion of Master Danyang’s fresh blood. This blood, belonging to one with spiritual power, is suitable for feeding ghostly entities.】
【Congratulations, you have obtained a portion of corpse fluid and various miscellaneous items.】
…
Still treating other people’s gains as his rewards.
Li Zhen couldn’t help but complain silently.
The scene shifted quietly—the alley turned into Li Zhen’s familiar study.
He was standing exactly where he had been when he disappeared.
Picking up the phone on the desk, he glanced at it—it was around three in the afternoon, only a few hours since he’d left.
“These things actually came through with me?”
Li Zhen looked down at the bag in his hand.
Not only the talismans and Spirit Preservation booklet from Master Danyang, but even the master’s blood and those miscellaneous items had all been brought back.
Next time, he could test whether everything from the mission world could be carried over—or only some of it.
Wasting no time, Li Zhen sent a message back to Fatty Wong, then left the study with his belongings.
Outside, Aunt He was trimming the garden plants with pruning shears. Seeing Li Zhen finally emerge during his “lunch break,” she asked, “Little Zhen, what do you want for dinner?”
“Anything’s fine. I don’t have much of an appetite.”
He answered casually and hurried down to the basement with his things.
As soon as he entered, a wave of cool air enveloped his entire body.
In that chill, Li Zhen felt an unprecedented sense of comfort.
He opened the door to the room where the Six-Armed Demonic Statue was enshrined.
First, he respectfully placed the Palm-Leaf Whip on the table in the corner, then offered three sticks of incense before it.
That item had helped him greatly in both instances—deserving his reverence.
Opening the bag,
Li Zhen took out the Red-Eyed Bat inside and placed it before the Demonic Statue.
The slumbering Red-Eyed Bat began to twitch and writhe, as if stirred by some unseen force.
