“Can I help you?” The nurse opened the door to ask.
“Nothing. I was loitering.” Jiang Cheng eased his way into the nurse’s station and sat on the wooden chair. He stared at the nurse. “Plus, I came to see you.”
“See me?” The nurse blinked uncomfortably. Then, she added in a whisper, “By the way, who was the doctor who came to administer the shot? I hope Director Qi doesn’t think too badly of me. I didn’t mean to do it. I was really busy. Recently, many nurses have been on leave. I am swamped.” The girl seemed worried about Director Qi’s opinion of her.
“It’s fine.” Jiang Cheng shrugged. “I will help explain your situation to Director Qi. We came unannounced.”
Seeing how understanding Jiang Cheng, the girl’s locked brows relaxed. Her impression of him improved. Her impression of him previously stopped at when he was sneaking around. It made her feel comfortable. “How is the patient?” The girl asked, “Is she better?”

“Hmm?” Jiang Cheng noticed something horrible. He grabbed her arm and asked in a scolding tone. “What happened? Why are there so many wounds?” The girl’s arm was covered in tiny scabs and wounds. The girl subconsciously wanted to pull back, but Jiang Cheng was too strong. He didn’t give her the chance.
“Does it still hurt?” Jiang Cheng frowned.
“No…”
“Are you a new intern here?” Seeing how careless the girl was, Jiang Cheng had a guess.
“Yeah.” The girl nodded and took out a small plastic case from her shirt pocket. It had a small clip. It was the ID of the medical staff.
Jiang Cheng studied it closely. The girl’s name was Zhao Ru. Her position was a nurse intern.
“I just graduated two months ago. This is my first job.” The girl whispered, “Director Qi told me that if I performed well during my internship, there’s a high chance I can stay. So…” The girl looked up at Jiang Cheng pleadingly.
Jiang Cheng understood that she was worried that he would complain to Director Qi about her. “You will definitely stay, considering how good you are,” Jiang Cheng encouraged her. Then, Jiang Cheng offered to read Zhao Ru’s palm. He even calculated her recent luck. He claimed that she had troubles with men in her life. They chatted happily. Zhao Ru put down her guard and became chattier.
Jiang Cheng claimed that normal men would only have eight abs, but he had trained a ninth ab under her eight abs. Zhao Ru didn’t believe him. He yanked her hand over and wanted her to touch his ninth ab. As they tussled back, Zhao Ru’s eyes scanned the table. A cartoon clock ticked patiently. Then, Zhao Ru panicked. “Damn. I’m going to be late!” She stood up swiftly.
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Cheng was still having fun.
“I need to treat the patient in Room 906.” Zhao Ru turned and ran out.
“I’ll go with you.” Jiang Cheng didn’t want to miss this chance to explore the hospital. He hadn’t explored the place above Floor Six. Plus, this was an opportunity to ask the nurse something. ’
Zhao Ru visibly hesitated. In the end, she nodded with difficulty. “You have to be quiet.”
“Don’t worry.”
Jiang Cheng accompanied Zhao Ru to take the medicine. He offered to take the tray for her, but she said it wouldn’t be appropriate. At first, Jiang Cheng was worried that Zhao Ru would take the elevator, but thankfully, she used the stairs. “Why don’t you use the elevator?” Jiang Cheng asked.
Zhao Ru whispered, “The hospital only has two elevators, and one is always broken. I don’t want to take up precious space. What if people have an emergency? After all, this is nothing important. Plus…” Zhao Ru suddenly closed her mouth as she remembered something. Her expression dropped. “If there’s nothing important, you should also avoid the elevator, especially at night.” Zhao Ru turned around to tell Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng finally heard the information he was looking for, but he pretended to be dumb. “Why?”
Zhao Ru hesitated and didn’t answer the question. She only told Jiang Cheng to be careful. Soon, they arrived at the sixth floor. He could see the corridor that the travellers had passed the day before. All the rooms were locked. The place looked deserted. “This is strange.” Jiang Cheng glanced down the corridor. “This place is not bad. Why are all the rooms locked?”
“I don’t know.” Zhao Ru was clueless. She held the tray and stood at the corner. She said, “I heard this place has been abandoned a long time ago. The head nurse has been working here for a decade already. When she started working here, this place had already been abandoned.”
“Ten years…”
“Yes.” Zhao Ru turned and urged, “Let’s hurry.”
Zhao Ru came to the ninth floor and stopped before Room 906. The room wasn’t locked. It was clear that Zhao Ru didn’t mean for Jiang Cheng to enter the room with her, but Jiang Cheng was very obedient. Zhao Ru looked around. When she realised there was no one else in the corridor, she allowed him to join her. The first thing Zhao Ru did was to switch on the lights.
Room 906 was totally different from the rooms given to them. Room 906 only had one bed. There was no table or dresser. Even the windows were hidden behind thick curtains. Other than the empty flower pots on the windowsill, there was no decoration. The sense of oppression was thick.
Even in the morning, if the lights weren’t on, this room would be shrouded in darkness.
Someone lay in the bed.
He came closer and realised it was a woman.
Her hair was greying. She looked around 50 or older.
The woman’s eyes were open as they stared at the ceiling. If they didn’t blink, Jiang Cheng would have thought the woman was dead.
