Chapter 20: Threat
KIAN
"Why would your own fiance be jealous of you?" I raise an interested eyebrow at Crystal.
"He was a cripple." Crystal hisses and I am kind of astonished that someone can hold this much resentment against someone, "He was rejected from the military because of his lack of competence and his ability to hold onto his ground in a battle. He took that shit out on me. He gouged out my eyes so I wouldn’t be able to see anything. He took my favorite thing away from me—my Saber..." I can hear the pleading and desperation in her voice as I press her a little down on the wall because she is resisting me, the gravitational force, and it’s tearing her apart. I certainly can’t let that happen.
Everything falls into place as she explains. She ruined the victim’s favorite things because hers was ruined or taken away as well. She gouged out their eyes because the same thing happened to her as well. She drained their blood because judging by how pale she looks, she has died in the same manner.
"Don’t resist, Crystal." I warn, "It will tear your soul apart beyond repair."
"Then let me go!" She bellows, her voice is so sharp and loud that it can shatter glasses effortlessly. Her voice is razor-sharp to the ears. "Let me save those women! Who will turn out just like me!"
I can hear Lain flinch from my side. I wonder if he is scared. But I don’t take my eyes off Crystal to check up on Lain.
"You are killing them, Crystal." I grimace, "This is not how you save someone. You are ruining them."
"I was ruined!" Crystal blows, a gust of wild cold wind whipping against my skin. Ugly black veins are bulging on her face, baring all her vicious teeth, and she is looking anything but beautiful right now. "I will ruin everyone who thrives for happiness!"
Right. Typical resentful ghost.
"And I can let that happen." I press her more into the human-shaped pit in the wall. I can perfectly conceal my mana power and the flow. I can control it just like every other movement in my body. Effortlessly and flawlessly. I am only demonstrating my magic power here, I haven’t even applied twenty percent of my power. "You have to back down Crystal. Or else I will crush your soul."
The soul is the fuel for a ghost or, more like, the lifeline. If it is cut out then the ghost perishes. Simple.
"No!" Crystal screeches and I want to slap that pretty mouth of hers shut because all it is capable of is screaming like a goddamned insane slut. I didn’t sign up for this. "I want my revenge!"
"From Andreas Norlen?" I prompt.
"Yes." Crystal answers in a much calmer manner. This time, maybe she is tired from all the yelling and resisting from before, but her words don’t lack any grudge. "I want Saber back and I want to see him die just like I did."
Are there any obligations that I have to fulfill Crystal’s last wish and help her take her vengeance? Nope. Do I want to do it out of goodwill of my heart? Absolutely nope. There isn’t much of heart left for goodwill anyway. And I don’t have such a shit to pay a mind to in the first place. No one ever told me that I was a good man. I don’t mind because they are right. And I don’t plan to change it.
I will just simply crush Crystal’s soul, grab Lain, turn, and walk away like nothing of it happened. This is the less troublesome and simplest way.
I intensify the force of gravity until it is almost painful to look at Crystal and hearing her is off the chart. I am pretty sure that the people sleeping inside the house behind us are already awake by now but are too scared to check up on what’s happening in their backyard. There will be guards soon and I don’t want to deal with them if I don’t need to. It’s useless dragging out the situation.
"What are you doing?" Lain’s words are full of breath. I turn my face and take him in, worry creasing the beautiful lines on his face. "You will crush her soul at this rate!"
My eyes widen a friction but it is back to normal in a split second, genuinely intrigued that Lain is showing another emotion that is not fury, irritation, and his I-know-everything-behaviour. "Because this is what I mean to do. You don’t expect me to help a wandering vengeful ghost out by murdering her murderer right?"
I snap my mouth shut almost instantly when I feel a cold smooth metal press against the pulse point of my throat. Without touching it, I know I don’t want to touch it because the thing is sharper than I’d like to be. It is barely touching my skin, but I can already feel the bead of hot fresh blood trickle down my throat.
"What are you doing, Lain?" My voice is sharp, my pulse thumping faster against his blade.
He ignores my question completely, "You are going to help her get her revenge." His green eyes are sharp and fierce. He can cut stones with them. Bloodlust and hostility are coming off from him in thunderclouds. Ready to storm on me.
"And why?" My mind races to how to get him to lower his blade. The way he is pressing it against me, if I try to do anything, it will take him a barely millisecond to slit my throat.
"Is this your last wish?" Lain’s voice drops to a deathly low decibel.
This is actually funny how my own captive has me at his blade point, ready for a bloodbath.
I sigh, my shoulder drooping and my magic easing on Crystal. "Fine."
"What?" He sounds surprised.
"I said fine. I will help her." As the words leave my mouth, a few guards come rushing into the backyard.
"Drop your weapons!"
Here comes more trouble.
