In the middle of the cracked battlefield, Heracross lay helpless in the crater, its eyes already swirling with unconsciousness.
The battle had just begun, but it was already over.
Garchomp scratched his head in boredom. The opponent had fallen before he'd even put in any effort. This kind of opponent was just too boring.
"Shaymin!" Shaymin clenched her little fists to congratulate Garchomp.
"Announce the result," John said to Akari.
Akari stood frozen, eyes wide and mouth agape, her face showing complete shock. She'd seen John's Garchomp before and knew it was strong, but she'd also believed her team's security captain wasn't weak.
But the result far exceeded her imagination.
It wasn't that John won after a fierce battle, Captain Zisu's Heracross had been knocked out in a single casual strike from John's Garchomp. And it wasn't even an actual move.
This meant the strength gap between the two Pokemon was enormous. Unimaginably enormous.
Clap! Clap! Clap!
Crisp applause rang out from Captain Cyllene, who was looking at John with a smile on her face.
"Mr.John, your strength is even greater than what Akari described to me!"
"Akari, announce the result."
"Yes, Captain!" Akari stuck out her tongue sheepishly. She'd tried her best to describe John as powerful, but he was even stronger than she'd thought. Simply inhuman!
"Heracross is unable to battle! Garchomp wins! The victor is John!"
A flash of shock crossed Zisu's face before she recovered her expressionless demeanor. "Congratulations. You've successfully passed the Galaxy Expedition Team's admission assessment. You are now a member of our team."
"Thanks for going easy on me," John said with a modest gesture.
"No need to be polite. You're very strong, you'd qualify for a leadership position in no time." While Zisu was speaking, a black shadow in the distant sky rapidly approached. Soon after, a Braviary landed on her arm.
Taking a note from Braviary's leg, Zisu immediately ed to Cyllene. "Captain Irida from Pearl Clan and Captain Adaman from Diamond Clan are about to arrive to discuss peace."
Hearing this, Cyllene turned to John.
"You've just arrived in Jubilife Village. You probably don't have lodging arranged yet. Let Akari show you to your quarters first, then back to headquarters later."
"Understood." John was very interested in meeting the two team captains, but since Cyllene had spoken, he wasn't in a rush. He planned to stay in ancient Sinnoh for a while anyway, there would be plenty of opportunities to interact with them.
Leaving the battle area, Akari took John on a tour of Jubilife Village and showed him around.
"This road is called Garden Street, and some of Jubilife Village's more famous shops line both sides."
"This is Beni's Wallflower, it's also the canteen where Galaxy Expedition Team members eat. Team members eat here for free. Of course, if you want to cook at home in the future, you can, but the team doesn't provide food stipends separately."
"See that photo studio? The person who runs it is named Dagero, he's a good friend of mine. You can take photos with Pokemon in the studio. I come here to photograph any memorable moments!"
Following the direction of Akari's finger, John spotted the photo studio and took it in stride.
Even though this was two thousand years in the past, in the Pokemon world, anything was possible. He'd already learned to stop questioning things.
After passing the hairdresser and the Ginkgo Guild merchant post, Akari brought John to the Galaxy Expedition Team dormitory.
It was a Japanese-style house with a courtyard. A small pond sat in the yard. Inside were tatami mats and a stove for heating and cooking. The setup was pretty nice.
What surprised John was that such a large dormitory was his alone.
"We don't have many members in the Galaxy Expedition Team, and most are deployed on field missions, so nobody's living in this dormitory right now."
"What about you?"
"My home is in Jubilife Village, so I go home after missions end. I don't stay in the dormitory."
Having the place to himself suited John fine. That way, nobody would notice if he suddenly disappeared or didn't come home at night.
John didn't have any luggage to unpack. After confirming his lodging, he left the dormitory with Akari.
They headed back to Galaxy Expedition Team headquarters.
He still needed to collect his team uniform.
Arriving at headquarters, John ran into Professor Laventon as soon as he entered.
The moment Laventon spotted John, he couldn't wait to approach.
"I heard you joined the Galaxy Expedition Team?"
"Yes, just now. I came to get my uniform," John replied.
"Excellent! Then we're colleagues now!" Laventon said excitedly, though he seemed a bit embarrassed, rubbing his hands together. "Ahem, I have a humble request. I wonder if you'd agree?"
John had already guessed what this was about.
"Go ahead. If it's reasonable, I'll agree. After all, we'll be colleagues going forward."
"Well, could you perhaps lend me that tablet to study for a while?"
"That tablet?" John looked a bit conflicted. "It belongs to my partner. If something happened to it..."
John was telling the truth, the Spooky Plate was guarded by Zoroark.
Even Gengar got nervous using it normally.
"Don't worry! I'll treat it with the utmost care and never let it get damaged!" Laventon quickly promised.
Damaged? If the Creation Tablets were that easily broken, they wouldn't deserve to be called Creation Tablets.
"Hmm, I can lend it to you, but actually, I have a request too." John went on the offensive.
"Please, name it!"
"My partner has also studied tablets. If possible, I'd like you to lend me the tablet in your possession."
"Of course, when I leave here, both tablets will remain in your care for now."
"No problem!" Laventon agreed immediately.
Now it was John's turn to be a bit disbelieving. After all, this was a Creation Tablet, right?
Was he deceived that easily?
Laventon felt like he'd gotten the better deal.
The important thing about these tablets was the text recorded on them. As long as he had time to decipher the content and at most photograph it for records, the physical tablet itself wasn't that valuable.
John probably wanted the tablet because they didn't have photography technology where he came from!
