Chapter 28 : Dark Clouds, Undercurrents Surging
"This gentleman, thank you so much for saving my lady."
Lina anxiously hugged me, carefully checking to ensure I wasn’t injured.
Only then did she remember the kind person who had helped, quickly standing up to bow in gratitude.
"No problem, no problem. As long as the little lady is unharmed, I’ll be on my way."
The red-haired man smiled, patted my head, put on his cloak, and disappeared into the crowd.
I nestled in Lina’s arms, my eyes curiously fixed on the man and the unusual sword at his waist.
"Lina, can I go browse over there?"
"Miss, remember to meet me at the intersection when it gets dark."
After briefly parting with Lina, I turned and walked into the alley.
Lycan had already dragged the half-dead Black-Clad Carriage Driver back.
I merely glanced at him and waved my hand to signal dealing with the man.
Another one of the Duke’s men.
This Duke seemed like a different person, always recklessly trying to strangle me in the cradle.
But his desperate moves only exposed his flaws each time.
In my previous life, Duke Victor’s methods were not only cruel and despicable but left almost no trace.
The assassins sent to kill me were either his personally trained death soldiers or, if the plan leaked, that person would inevitably be eliminated.
In my previous life, even though I knew the assassins were sent by the Duke, I could never grasp evidence of his actions.
I was even framed and slandered.
It was like playing chess on a mountain of blades—one wrong move, and a sharp blade would pierce through my body.
"Master, there’s news from the Lubi Merchant Group. They intercepted transaction information between the Clover Family and another kingdom."
According to Lycan, a batch of precious goods was secretly traded at the Port managed by Lubi, led by a representative of the Clover Family.
Although they claimed it was a spice trade, at Lubi’s request, Lycan sneaked onto the merchant ship and found only a large amount of gold and silver treasures, covered with a thin layer of spice powder.
Lubi had wanted to seize the goods, but the other party presented the Empress’s seal, forcibly taking the goods from the Port.
However, the leader’s negligence allowed Lubi to trace the ship’s origin—the Eryus Empire.
Any trade between two countries required the Oak Family’s approval before leaving the country.
Even the Emperor’s private merchant group had to go through a cursory inspection for show.
If dangerous items or hidden troops slipped past this checkpoint, it would surely spark a war between the two nations.
On this matter, even the Royal Family had little privilege.
The Empress had caused a major blunder this time.
"My people have been following the Clover Family. We only need your order—"
"Keep watching them. It’s not time to close the net yet."
Lycan nodded, respectfully retreating into the shadows and disappearing.
I ran to a nearby flower shop, picked a few fresh wildflowers, and leisurely walked toward the street’s intersection.
Lina was already waiting there with her vegetable basket.
Meanwhile, in the guest palace prepared for the envoys of the two kingdoms, the Grand Duke of Saito's was leisurely sipping red wine brought from his homeland.
A cloaked man climbed in from the balcony, slowly removing his cloak to reveal a flash of bright red hair.
"How did it go? Were you spotted?"
"I was spotted."
"Fine, next time you can use the front door. There’s no one around, yet you’re still so sneaky. Which part of you takes after your old man?"
The young man wiped the blood from his sword, casually reclining in a chair.
He snatched the red wine from the Grand Duke’s hand and gulped it down.
The Grand Duke wasn’t annoyed, just watching him.
"I went to the capital’s largest library. Their archives did record strangers entering the city over a decade ago, but my sister might have used a fake name. I couldn’t find her."
"No rush, Kyle. Even if these old bones of mine fall into hell, I’ll make sure to apologize to her before death takes me."
The Grand Duke’s eyes dimmed, and he opened a new bottle of wine, chugging it down fiercely.
In the morning, sunlight bathed the garden.
A dewdrop quietly fell from a tree, landing on the golden hair of a girl.
"Your Highness, what are you doing here?"
"If you sneak up behind me like that again, I’ll run you through with my sword."
Yiwen ignored my curious head-shaking, focusing on digging in the flowerbed with a shovel.
Her Silver Sword rested quietly in the soil nearby.
I didn’t understand but asked Kafu, who was standing guard nearby, for a shovel.
I mimicked her, digging alongside her until we made a deep pit.
We wiped our sweat and stopped.
"Your Highness, this sword is very important to you, isn’t it?"
"Very important, so it can’t be found by anyone."
Yiwen, with a hint of regret but resolute, tossed her Silver Sword into the pit.
We didn’t speak, slowly filling the soil.
Not far away, a few haughty maids stood impatiently in the reception room, trying to push past but were scared off by Kafu’s fierce glare.
"By order of Her Majesty the Empress, we’ve come to invite Her Highness the Sixth Princess to the Empress’s palace for etiquette lessons. Please come with us, Your Highness Yiwen."
Brandishing their authority like a badge, the lead maid was clearly arrogant toward Yiwen.
I smiled and nudged Yiwen’s hand, whispering in her ear.
"Want me to deal with her? She looks like she was sent by the Empress to make trouble."
Yiwen pushed my face away, exchanged a glance with Kafu, and after he respectfully disappeared, she followed the maids slowly toward the Empress’s palace.
Left me standing there, huh? So heartless.
"Master, we found him."
Oh? Finally, some action.
I deftly flipped open the garden’s haystack, vanishing into the greenery.
By the time Kafu returned, the place was empty.
"Lycan, don’t barge into other people’s back gardens like that."
"Yes…"
Yiwen followed the maids to the Empress’s Back Garden, where several noble young ladies were already seated obediently beside the Empress.
The Third Princess quietly winked at her.
"Yiwen, my dear child, come sit."
The Empress smiled and beckoned Yiwen to sit.
Today was a small tea party hosted by the Empress to guide and educate the daughters of noble families into high society.
It was an opportunity no noble lady would miss.
But Yiwen listened listlessly as the Empress droned on about what she deemed proper royal etiquette and the manners of a noble lady, while wondering why the Third Princess, Yileta, seemed so engrossed.
"Don’t you find it amusing how she entertains herself?"
Yileta gave a sly smile.
