Chapter 179: I can’t treat my wife the way you treat Sarah
To everyone’s surprise, it was Drake who showed up, making Lucas so furious that he nearly grabbed the files on his desk and hurled them at the man’s face.
Just moments ago, the air had been thick with tension, the office filled with an almost suffocating, intimate atmosphere.
But now, his good mood has been utterly ruined by this unwelcome intruder.
A vein throbbed visibly on Lucas’s forehead as he clenched his fists.
"You two take your time. I’m leaving."
Though Beauty was grateful that Drake’s timely arrival had saved her from an awkward situation, it didn’t erase the fact that he was, in her eyes, still a scumbag.
With a cold glare in his direction, she stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Now, only the two men remained in the vast office, the atmosphere between them turning unbearably tense.
Watching Beauty’s retreating figure, Drake frowned, his sharp brows knitting together.
"What’s gotten into her?
Did you bully her again?
Honestly, you’re not exactly a spring chicken—how can you keep picking on a young girl like that?
Don’t you have a conscience?"
Already in a foul mood, Lucas didn’t hesitate.
In one swift motion, he twisted Drake’s arm behind his back, a cold snort escaping his nostrils.
He only let go when Drake yelped in pain, his face flushing red.
Rubbing his sore arm, Drake winced.
Fighting a black belt in taekwondo was a losing battle, and he knew it.
"What the hell’s wrong with you today?" he snapped.
"If you’re pissed at your wife, don’t take it out on me!"
Lucas dropped onto the sofa, his expression dark. "You’re one to talk.
You’ve been tormenting Sarah for years, and you’re older than I am.
At least I actually cherish my wife—unlike you."
Drake felt like his lungs were about to explode.
First, he’d hit a wall with Sarah, then had to grovel to Samantha, only to return home and get an earful from his father.
Now, here he was, seeking solace from his best friend, only to be scolded again.
If anyone had the right to complain, it was him.
No matter what he did, he ended up offending everyone.
He was the real victim here—stuck in the middle, damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.
And now, he was the one being lectured?
Unbelievable!
"Do you think I wanted to treat Sarah like that?
Every bit of pain she feels cuts straight to my heart.
Right now, I’m the villain no matter where I turn, taking hits from all sides.
What the hell did I even do to deserve this?"
Drake’s forehead twitched with barely contained rage as he slammed his fist onto the coffee table, the impact reverberating through the room.
Lucas, lounging back with effortless ease, arched a brow and smirked.
"What?
Regretting it now?
You brought this on yourself the moment you tangled with Samantha.
Did you forget how powerful Samantha family is?
They’ve got connections everywhere—legitimate and otherwise.
Her father’s ruthless. How many businesses has he crushed under his thumb?
Ten? Eight?
Sarah’s family business was a prime example.
And you—of all people—had to go after his daughter. If you dare mess with Samantha and then bail, your old man will skin you alive."
Drake looked like a man drowning in regret, his expression twisted in helpless frustration.
"You know how it was back then.
I never planned to get back with Samantha after she returned from abroad.
But my dad forced my hand at his birthday banquet—practically shoved me into proposing.
And I just... I needed to know if Sarah even cared about me.
Now look at this mess."
Lucas let out a derisive snort.
"Well, now you’ve got your answer.
Sarah probably sees you and Samantha as the enemy now.
If you want to win her back, I’ve got four words for you."
Drake raked a hand through his disheveled hair, eyes sharp with anticipation.
"What four words?"
With deliberate coldness, Lucas enunciated each syllable: "Beyond. Saving."
"Damn it!"
Drake nearly grabbed the glass of water in front of him to hurl at Lucas’s face.
Then, recalling Beauty’s earlier hostility, he crossed his legs and mused, "That attitude Beauty gave me just now—was it because of Sarah?" Lucas scoffed.
"Took you long enough to figure that out?
You wrecked her best friend’s life.
Be grateful she didn’t come at you with a knife—that’s her being gentle.
Count your blessings."
Drake fell silent, his sharp brows knitting together as he shot Lucas a glare.
"You’ve gotten real protective of your wife lately.
Married life treating you that well, huh?
Meanwhile, your brother here’s drowning in chaos, and you won’t even throw me a lifeline."
"How could I not help you?
I just sorted out Sarah’s housing issue—probably already signed the contract by now.
That was the biggest hurdle, wasn’t it?"
Lucas crossed his legs, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
Drake finally cracked a smile and gave him a hearty pat on the shoulder.
"Didn’t expect you to move so fast, buying the place outright.
Did you transfer the money to Sarah yet?"
Lucas shot him a cold glare.
"What’s the rush with the payment?
Sarah’s sharp—if she catches wind of anything, all this effort goes down the drain.
After the contract is finalized, we’ll pay a deposit first.
Then, when she moves out, another installment.
Sounds.,, solid to you?"
Drake scoffed.
"Since when do you nickel-and-dime Sarah?
We agreed I’d cover the cost—just tell me the amount, and I’ll wire it to your account."
"Looks like heartbreak really does fry your brain. If I don’t make it look legit, Sarah will get suspicious.
You think she’s as careless and clueless as you?"
Drake bristled at the jab but bit back his irritation, considering the guy had just done his crush a favor.
With a wry smile, he conceded, "Fine.
After the contract is signed, I’ll transfer the deposit.
Once Sarah officially moves out, I’ll settle the rest.
Deal?"
Lucas made to shove him onto the couch, but Drake dodged just in time.
Knowing they had a dinner gathering later—and wanting to avoid running into Sarah—Drake left as work hours wound down.
At the elevator bank, he bumped into Beauty, who greeted him with nothing but an icy glare before he could even speak.
*So this is what it feels like to get ganged up on by this couple*, Drake mused, exhaling heavily, his emotions tangled. ---
Beauty had picked a modestly priced restaurant with rave reviews for authenticity.
Despite its recent opening, it was already packed—conveniently close to the office.
It was their first time leaving work together, and the elevator held just the two of them.
Mindful of the surveillance, they kept their distance, though their gazes locked, lips curling in silent amusement.
Beauty broke the awkward silence first.
"I’ve reserved a table.
We’ll order first, then wait for Sarah to join after her meeting.
She said we can get whatever we want—just not too little for three people. I checked the prices.
She can definitely afford it, and we’ll still leave stuffed."
"Now that’s what I call a thrifty woman.
Guess I married well."
Lucas reached for her hand, but she deftly pulled away, shooting him a pointed glance at the camera overhead.
