Chapter 128: Chapter 65: Gleaning Ears of Grain_3
"I do care," Lian Manman wanted to say, but Shen Qian’s chubby hand had already grabbed the pancake from her hands.
"Alright, here, eat it," Lian Manman simply gave the pancake to Shen Qian.
The pancake was made from millet flour and though Shen Qian ate it with relish, not fussy at all, no wonder he was so chubby, Lian Manman thought to herself.
"Uncle Grandfather says he likes the countryside in autumn. He has business in Prefecture City, but he should be back in town in a couple of days," Shen Qian, having finished the pancake, then said, "Manman, what are you doing here in the field?"
"Picking up grain ears, to add to the family’s food supply. You wouldn’t understand," Lian Manman said.
Shen Qian jumped up and pulled a servant aside, whispering something to him, and the servant ran towards the manor.
Lian Manman also stood up and called out to Shen Qian, "You go play by yourself, I need to pick up grain ears."
"You’ve been picking for half a day, and this is all you’ve got? That’s not enough to eat. Manman, come play with me," Shen Qian said, pulling Lian Manman, not letting her go back to the field.
"Behave, go play on your horse. I have serious work to do," Lian Manman said and turned to walk into the field.
Shen Qian grabbed the basket Lian Manman was carrying and said, "Manman, look." He pointed behind Lian Manman.
Turning her head, Lian Manman saw the servant who had just run off coming back quickly with two farmhands, both carrying heavy hemp sacks.
"Manman, you don’t need to pick up grain ears. Are these two bags of grain enough for your family? If not, I’ll have them send more," Fatty Shen Qian said, waving his chubby arms, appearing quite the big spender.
Lian Manman’s face immediately darkened. She was wrong to have even interacted with this annoying fellow, even if it was because of Imperial Doctor Shi.
"Young Master Shen, we pick up grain ears to earn our meal through hard work. We have no relation to you and can’t afford to accept such heavy gifts," Lian Manman said sternly.
"Aren’t we friends?" Shen Qian said. He did not understand why Lian Manman suddenly got angry. After all the hard work, she had managed to gather less than a basket of grain ears, and he had given her two bags of grain. Shouldn’t she be happy?
"We can’t afford to be friends with someone of your status," Lian Manman shrugged off Shen Qian and headed back into the field.
"What did I do wrong? Tell me," Shen Qian looked genuinely hurt.
Lian Manman left Shen Qian behind and walked back with Lian Zhizhi and the others.
"Manman, how do you know the Young Master of the Shen Family?" Lian Zhizhi asked Lian Manman.
Lian Manman had told Lian Zhizhi about her visit to Imperial Doctor Shi’s House, but she hadn’t mentioned meeting Shen Qian. Now, as she picked up grain ears, she recounted the experience of that day.
While picking up grain ears, Lian Manman suddenly felt something snag her basket. Turning around, she saw Shen Qian standing right behind her, his chubby face covered in sweat. The two servants stood not too far behind him, looking helplessly resigned.
Shen Qian’s eyes narrowed into slits as he smiled, revealing white teeth.
"Manman, I got this for you." Shen Qian was lifting his robe hem, revealing a pile of grain ears mixed with some leaves and weeds. "I helped pick them for you."
Lian Manman’s eyes widened a bit. She had refused his gift of grain, but had he understood why and decided to help her pick grain ears instead?
Lian Manman didn’t know what to say for a moment.
The clothes of the two servants were also dirty.
"It wasn’t just you picking, was it?" Lian Manman said.
"Heh, these two aren’t very useful; I picked most of it," Shen Qian said.
"You went to all the trouble of picking them, you should keep them," Lian Manman said.
"No, no, I picked these for you, all for you," Shen Qian hastily said.
With Shen Qian insisting like this, Lian Manman found it hard to refuse.
"Thank you then," Lian Manman said.
"Manman, we’re friends now!" Shen Qian exclaimed.
"Young Master, the headman has come with people," the two servants approached and said.
Lian Manman turned her head and indeed, she saw a group of people hurrying over from River Bend.
"Manman, I have to go," Shen Qian hurriedly handed the grain ears to Lian Manman and ran with his servants to the edge of the field. Before he was even hoisted onto his horse, the group had already reached them.
Watching Shen Qian being escorted by the group of people back to the manor, this Fatty Shen, it seemed, wasn’t so annoying after all. Thinking this, Lian Manman subconsciously touched her sleeve, huh, where was her handkerchief?
She was wrong; Fatty Shen was indeed annoying. (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to vote for it with recommendation tickets and monthly tickets at Qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
