Chapter 114: Chapter 114: Free Kelp
Fortunately, Chunya was lucky and discovered Zhao Chunshui’s true nature early on; otherwise, she would have suffered endlessly after marrying him!
The four of them hurriedly left the Red Temple Team, afraid that if they lingered any longer, Mrs. Zhao might make more unreasonable demands.
On the way back, Fifth Aunt said to Lin Xiang, "Don’t worry, dear, I only agreed as a formality earlier. There’s no way I’d let you help her."
Lin Xiang said seriously, "Fifth Aunt, technically, I shouldn’t be the one telling you this as a youngster, but you really need to be more vigilant in the future. You should be grateful; the Zhao Family might not be good people in the traditional sense, but they aren’t completely bad either. Otherwise, with you and Chunya going there alone today, who knows what might have happened."
Hearing Lin Xiang’s words, Fifth Aunt felt a wave of fear.
She said sheepishly, "I didn’t think much at the time, just felt that Zhao Chunshui’s grandfather had a long-standing comrade friendship with my father. They’ve passed away, so as the younger generation, I needed to send a gift on behalf of my father."
Who could have thought it was just an excuse the Zhao Family cooked up!
The fact that they used their elder’s health as an excuse shows how poor the Zhao Family’s character is!
But Lin Xiang was right; it was reckless of her this time. If the Zhao Family really had bad intentions, who knows what situation she and Chunya might have faced.
"Next time something like this happens again, I’ll consult your Fifth Uncle when he returns. With him not home, I absolutely won’t go alone to unfamiliar places."
Chunya spoke up, "I didn’t believe what the Zhao Family said, thinking my mom disagreed with the annulment so I went with them to the Red Temple Team. I know my mom would never agree to anything with Zhao Chunshui. I was just worried about her, so I wanted to come and see."
"Mom knows you’re a good girl."
Joking and chatting, they returned to Li Hua Team.
The bicycle was borrowed by Lin Xiang, so naturally, Lin Xiang returned it.
Since it was only used for about an hour, Lin Xiang paid just two cents in rental fee.
When she came out of the team office, Fifth Uncle proactively handed her the money.
Lin Xiang didn’t refuse; settling accounts clearly makes relationships more genuine.
By the time Lin Xiang returned home, Mrs. Lin had already prepared the meal.
Mrs. Lin’s culinary skills might not surpass Lin Xiang’s, but they weren’t bad either. Lin Xiang ate to her fill, then did a simple wash-up and went to bed to rest.
Recently, she had been waking up early every day; her body desperately needed sleep to recharge.
The next morning, Lin Xiang got up early as usual to make porridge.
When Fifth Uncle knocked on the door, Mrs. Lin glanced behind, not seeing Chunya, "Where’s Chunya?"
"Sleeping at home."
"Let her come along to the market."
Fifth Uncle shook his head, "Even if she comes, she won’t be much help. The girl still needs to be paid two cents in wages, which makes us feel embarrassed, so it’s better not to let her go."
Yesterday, Lin Xiang gave five cents, saying it was for the wages of both Fifth Uncle and Chunya.
The previous day Chunya didn’t go, so Lin Xiang only paid three cents.
Mrs. Lin slapped her thigh, "How come Chunya isn’t useful? When she was there the day before yesterday, our stall was clean and tidy. Yesterday it was just the three of us, and we couldn’t keep up during the meal rush! I’ll decide, let Chunya go along with us; she earns her two cents in wages!"
Lin Xiang agreed, "Right, with Chunya’s help, at least we won’t be scrambling."
Fifth Uncle had no choice but to call Chunya; once Chunya was up, Lin Xiang had already finished tidying.
The marketplace.
After serving a wave of customers, Chunya and Fifth Uncle skillfully tidied up the tables and chairs, washed the dishes, and a few of them sat on stools eating the rolls Aunt Ge had given.
"Girl, when will Lin Yun come back?" Chunya took a bite of the roll, "Even with just the spicy noodle business, we can earn a dollar or two a day. You have to pay me and my dad fifty cents in wages. If Lin Yun comes back to help, we can save the fifty cents, which would be about the same as what he would earn working outside."
Lin Xiang thought to herself, the male lead basically didn’t go out to work, and as for when he’d be back, she honestly had no idea.
"My brother was doing labor work in town previously and owed someone a favor. These days, they’re overwhelmed with work, so he’s repaying a favor while earning a bit of money. Once they’re less busy, he’ll be back."
Mrs. Lin grumbled discontentedly, "What kind of favor takes so long to repay? We are quite busy at home too!"
Lin Xiang picked up a cup of water and handed it to Mrs. Lin, who took it instinctively.
"We have Fifth Uncle and Chunya helping us, so we can manage. Mom, my brother is already grown up, give him some freedom. Besides, there’s no farm work recently, so no need to earn work points."
Mrs. Lin glared at her but didn’t say anything in the end.
Before the roll was even finished, more customers arrived.
Lin Xiang put the roll in the bowl and began cooking noodles skillfully.
"Want to add some seaweed?"
"What’s seaweed?"
Though Ji Province isn’t an inland province, Ji City is far from the sea. Transportation isn’t convenient now, and traveling long distances requires an introduction letter, which is very troublesome, so many people have rarely left Ji City in their lifetime, especially rural folks. Not having seen seaweed is normal.
"This is seaweed, produced in the sea, very delicious. Want to try some?"
Hearing it’s something fresh, the customer was tempted, "How much does it cost?"
"Anyone who comes to my stall for spicy noodles today gets free seaweed!"
Hearing it’s free, the customer immediately said, "Yes! Give me three bowls of spicy noodles, all with seaweed!"
Since this season has no seasonal vegetables, Lin Xiang’s spicy noodles were always just plain noodles. She had thought about sprouting some beans, but never found the time. Today, with seaweed added to the spicy noodles, although it tasted the same, it felt different eating it.
Most people love freebies; anything labeled "free" attracts many.
So, adding seaweed made the spicy noodle business even better than before.
But Lin Xiang only prepared a limited amount of sweet potato noodles each day, once sold out, there were none left.
Today’s closing time was half an hour earlier than yesterday.
"We can’t come to the marketplace tomorrow," Lin Xiang muttered while tidying up.
"Why?" Chunya asked, "The spicy noodle business is so good, I roughly counted; today at least eighty bowls were sold. After deducting costs, the profit is at least two dollars and fifty cents. If we don’t come, we miss out on earning that much money daily!"
Lin Xiang said helplessly, "I brought all of our sweet potato noodles today, and we sold out. I need about two days to make more sweet potato noodles."
Besides sweet potato noodles, she also planned to make some potato noodles, and enhance the flavors of spicy noodles.
And today is Sunday, I’ve agreed with Yu Xiumei that tomorrow, Monday, we’ll go to Town First Middle School to teach them the Heimlich maneuver.
So, tomorrow is a planned rest day.
Once home, Lin Xiang busied herself with work immediately.
