Chapter 396: Changes Unseen
"What’s wrong?" Jace did not feel like dealing with distractions. The High Priestess ordered him to have a vacation for two months so that is what he was doing. Or at least what he was trying to do. But here this guy was, interrupting him.
The soldier held out a sealed container. "Your new rank and other relevant information." The soldier saluted as Jace took it out of his hand. "In addition the High Priestess requires you for a meeting in an hour. We need to get going if-"
"Not yet." Jace interrupted him. He then looked at Jordan and Cho. "It will have to wait until the bus arrives to pick these two up." He then looked to Cain.
Cain nodded his robotic head and moved inside while Jace opened the sealed container. It released a rush of air before slowly opening to reveal the Insignia of a Major. At least the equivalent within the Victorium Military. In addition there was a small hand written letter and a military patch.
"Oh? Father was formally moved from the militia to the military?" Cho asked in excitement.
Jace nodded his head as he pulled out the letter and read it. It was a fancy and well worded thing. Something that would likely be hung up on the wall on some more ambitious people. But it basically said that he was too talented to linger as the commander of a ’temporary’ mixed squad.
Instead he would be given command of an entire mobile task force unit. He would have to staff most of the unit with anyone and everyone that he thought might be necessary for this task. He would also act directly under the High Priestess and Director Fenrir. Which meant that regardless of rank, there was no one that could command him in normal circumstances.
The rest of the letter was a lot of fluff and fancy talk. It was basically telling him he was a valued member of the military and would hopefully serve for several years to come. It was honestly a bit annoying.
He closed it and walked into the garage setting the container on his work desk before walking back out but grabbing his Pyre in a holster. He attached the holster to his thigh and then walked back out.
Then the bus for Cho and Jordan arrived. "Okay you two. I might be home when you get back. But if I am not, Cain will be here to take care of you." Jace told him as they waved goodbye and climbed onto the bus. He could hear a bunch of activity inside the bus from small children talking.
"Bye Father!" Cho waved and Jordan signaled the same thing. Causing Jace to flinch in surprise. Then he watched as Jordan blushed and ran quickly further into the bus.
It then pulled away and Jace looked at Cain. "Close up the garage. I probably will not be that long."
"Understood." Cain answered before the garage door began closing.
Jace looked at the soldier who was still standing there awkwardly. "Lead the way, Sergeant." Jace ordered.
"Umm... you uniform?" The officer asked in confusion, glancing at the closing garage door.
"My uniform is my armor. I only wear that to a battle. I do not expect to be heading into one at the moment. So we can just go." Jace told him.
The sergeant took a moment before nodding and leading the way. He walks across the street and Jace follows him to his car. Once they were inside with Jace taking up a spot in the back seat the soldier seemed to relax some more and pulled out onto the road.
Jace checked his communicator and saw he still did not have a message. It was the reason he also grabbed a pistol. There was no warning so he was worried that this might be a trap set by someone. But as they drove toward the central building where the High Priestess was both living and was working.
He had learned that the orius attack had resulted in the destruction of her temporary house. So she was forced to sleep where she worked for the moment since it was far more defended. She was not the only one. According to Mistress White a lot of the former nobles and high ranking officials lost their homes to explosions.
But Jace noticed that the main fairway had been completed already. As the soldier pulled onto it he noticed something strange that he did not see at all in the back streets. A flying car.
"When did they get the hover cars done?" Jace asked.
"Recently. They were made on this colony station actually. It is one of the things the princess was pushing to make this place a hotspot for trade. Apparently they only managed it when the military started creating those hoverbikes." The soldier answered.
"So they use the same hover plates that the hoverbikes use?" Jace asked, feeling a bit annoyed that he was not alerted. He should be making some money off of that if they were using his designs. He would have to bring this up with the High Priestess.
"Umm... yes they do. I do not know that much about it though. I just know the military had a hand in helping along their creation." The sergeant answered with a shrug.
"Interesting. How has the shakeup been within the military and militia?" Jace decided to just leave it at that and change the subject to something else.
"Actually... not much has changed on the logistics side. We still to a superior and run errands. Except now we work for some aliens and they are way more organized and have a lot more funding. Then there is the amount of manpower. I do not have to worry about running an entire shipping fleet by myself." The man began ranting and Jace almost immediately began tuning him out as he took a look at the surroundings as they drove on the fairway.
The changes they were making were truly incredible. But it looks like they really were making changes going from the Central Government building to the rest of the station. At this rate the Waterway area would start seeing changes within the month.
