Chapter 464: Chapter 464- The Day A Demon’s Brain Stopped Braining
Now in place of the snow, a massive magic formation stretching far into the horizon was underneath them.
That said, the formation was no longer rotating. Its glow was dull, and it appeared like it was dead and destroyed.
In truth, that was the case. Reinhardt’s last attack,
[Divine Severance],
not only annihilated the darkness that was controlling Sir Gerard, but it also cleaved through the Seal of the Eternal Winter.
And with that, the obstacles were all cleared.
The battlefield that was teeming with corrupted forces was now gone. More than 9,000 demonified knights, including the legendary Sir Gerard, had all been purified in just ten seconds.
Reinhardt stood in his place, his eyes closed and his body glowing with divine light as he performed his last rites for these brave souls.
The next moment, when he opened them again, it was filled with absolute confidence and silent fury.
"Now... demon, it’s your turn." He declared as his eyes rested on the demon.
Compared to Reinhardt’s indifferent expression, the high ranking demon’s face was a sight to see.
The latter stared at the empty battlefield with wide open jaws and trembling violently.
"W... WH... WHAT THE FUCK!?" He was in a state of shock and even had a mental breakdown.
"T-Ten seconds!? That was TEN SECONDS! Not ten minutes! Not ten hours! TEN!" The high ranking demon clutched his head almost in a manner of wanting to tear his hair off.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?"
The demon was losing his mind. Anyone would after seeing that absolute display of power that left no questions. He was afraid and even impressed.
"I had over nine thousand demonified knights! Nine thousand!! Some of them were even high ranking knights from the standards of the humans. A-And this... this lunatic deletes them like bad doodles!? Does this make sense?"
At the end of its sentence, the demon really lost it and started laughing.
He spun around, laughing and crying like a fool.
"I HAD EVERYTHING PREPARED FOR TODAY! AGAINST SUCH A FORCE, EVEN A HERO WOULD STRUGGLE!!"
The demon pointed at Reinhardt again. "But YOU!? You... ARGGHH! WHAT EVEN ARE YOU!? Did you eat a sun!? Did you swallow a god!? THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE."
"The Divine Paladin... he is someone we cannot hope to defeat."
Out from the corner came Earl Malmond’s words; he was already backing away. Not on his two feet but rather on all fours. The fear of the Divine Paladin was that profound.
Of course, for others like the demon who experienced such a severe shock that their mental state had collapsed, his fear was replaced by a state of disbelief. In short, it could be said that the demon’s brain was not braining.
"THAT DOESN’T HELP!!!"
Its voice cracked three times in one sentence. Then it flumped down on the ground and threw a tantrum. Its eyes, which were hidden from everyone, flickered with a cunning light.
All this show was to buy these few seconds of time. A desperate, wicked idea. A life-or-death spark of cunning.
If one looked at the demon’s position, they would be able to notice that it had inched dangerously close to the woman at some point in time.
And then in a swift motion, the latter lunged toward the woman who was standing motionless this entire time, as if they could not feel anything.
Even right now, as the demon’s razor sharp claws stopped just a hair from her neck, she stood there without showing any emotions, like a cold, emotionless doll.
"D-Don’t move, Divine Paladin!" The demon was so afraid that its pitch turned a little flat at the end. "One step closer, and I SPLIT HER NECK IN HALF!"
Facing him, Reinhardt crossed his arms, amused by the show. Did this demon think he was an idiot? Anyone could see that the woman was an accomplice; no, she was more like a trap set just for him.
Nevertheless, he still decided to humour the other party.
"...You’re taking a hostage?"
"YES I’M TAKING A HOSTAGE! AND IT’S A DAMN GOOD PLAN!"
It wasn’t. Not against someone like Reinhardt. But he had to make the other party believe it.
"Calm down, you don’t need to shout."
"CALM? How can I calm down after that? After what you had just shown?" The demon was divinely terrified of the being in front of him that was like a god incarnate.
Reinhardt tilted his head. "Release her."
"O-Only if you let us go... in exchange." The demon spoke in a panic induced confidence. It was working. The Divine Paladin looked like he was considering it.
His plot had worked. The woman was the Host of the Demon Lord’s Curse. If he could just get her a few feet from the knight, he could then activate the curse. Thus getting rid of the Divine Paladin forever.
The world thought that the Divine Paladin was afflicted with the curse after losing against the Seventh Heavenly King. However, the High Ranking Demon and Earl Malmond knew that was not the case.
In the Battle of the Black Tide, the latter was only struck by the curse and nearly died at the hands of the Seventh Heavenly King because there was no other choice. Because he had to save that person.
Earl Malmond, who was backing down, realized the ploy and immediately played along. "That’s right, Divine Paladin. It will be a stain on your reputation forever if you fail to save the hostage again."
Maybe his words struck a nerve or a bad memory, but Reinhardt glared at him with cold eyes. Finally, as if relenting to their threats, the latter’s lips moved, and he spoke the words they were dying to hear.
"Fine."
It was just one word, but the demon and Earl Malmond felt like they were pardoned by the heavens. Both of them did their best not to show their relieved expressions.
And so, while dragging the woman with them, they started backing down toward the spatial gate the demon had conjured. This entire time, the high ranking demon had its claws against the neck of the woman.
