The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1140.1
Chapter 1140.1
Having received a message from Chris Marten, Evangeline immediately left her house, recalling the address he had sent her.
The scenery changed in a blur as she shot from building to building, with such speed as if ricocheting between them. It was the kind of view Evangeline would usually love to enjoy, but she didn’t even register the view as it flashed past her.
‘I have to go faster.’
The destination was much further than she had expected, and she eventually began to feel her limits.
She could tell it’d take at least thirty minutes to arrive at her pace. She thus pushed even more strength into her legs to speed up, but there seemed to be a limit on how fast she could go.
‘Why can’t I go any faster?!’
Her emotions surged violently as she cried in her mind out of frustration. At the same time, she began to change. Just like how her eyes turned violet whenever her emotions intensified, the power inside her began to affect her body as well.
Her pupils vertically slit, and her iris turned violet, showing similar traits to a dragon’s eye. However, even more changes were in store.
Riiip!! Crack!!
The sound of cloth tearing echoed from behind her as enormous black wings unfurled from her back. The wings spread out like those of a dragon, yet they were only about a meter wide on each side, not all that large, relatively speaking.
Nonetheless, their solid bone structure and dark membranes radiated an unexplainable and eerie pressure.
“Bigger!” she shouted as she kicked off the rooftop of a towering building.

The form of her wings began to distort, transforming into massive, flickering wings of light. The rough-surfaced black wings rapidly expanded to a width of nearly five meters.
Boom!!! Crash!!
With just a single flap, she was able to launch her body at supersonic speed. The resulting sonic boom shattered some windows of nearby high-rises, leaving people screaming all over in response. Evangeline didn’t seem to have the luxury to care as she shot through the air with unrelenting force.
She only had a rough sense of the direction, and didn’t know the exact coordinates. In fact, all she had was the general location Chris Marten had sent her. Still, her movement showed no hesitation, reassured in her own method of navigation. The closer she went in the given direction, the more the foul smell of impure mana assaulted her senses. It was a particularly foul stench, like the burnt and twisted odor of the flow of mana.
When it came to mana flow, ancient dragons were bound to be especially sensitive.
What had initially been a vague sense of direction gradually grew more precise as she approached. It wasn't long before she saw a gate, dozens of meters wide, along with a large group of people gathered in front of it.
“Time to go to work.”
As she flapped her wings rapidly to hover in midair, the group of people’s attention was instantly drawn toward her. With a single flap of her massive wings, a powerful gust swept the area, those on the ground ducking in alarm.
The intense wind pressure was overwhelming, enough to press down both ordinary civilians and Awakened alike.
“
Ugh?!
”
“What is this pressure...?”
As she descended closer to the ground with unimaginable force, her giant wings began to break apart like fragments. At the same time, the force of levitation that had supported her vanished, and she landed softly on the ground.
Fortunately, she had been only about a meter above the ground when her wings disappeared, so her landing was clean and quiet.
As if to say their task was done, her wings then folded in and vanished behind her back.
“Who are you...?”
She anxiously shouted, “The gate! Is it in there?!”
Faced with her abrupt questioning, the people exchanged glances.
While one look at her wings made it clear she wasn’t an ordinary person, the people thought she was too beautiful to be considered a monster.
Fortunately, one person recognized her face.
“E-Evangeline O’Rowane! You're the Saint of Tionis’s daughter!”
“Move, I need to go in.”
“No. Step back, please.”
Apparently still unaware of the situation, government personnel blocked her entry. Agents in black suits raised their arms, barring her way.
“Why are you stopping me?! Isn’t there someone trapped inside?!”
“We know, Miss, but this is a Korean matter. It’s not something you should endanger yourself over.”
“I can save them! I have to go in! Why call me here and then stop me?!”
Although they had heard she was the Saint of Tionis’s daughter, ordinary people like them couldn’t possibly send someone into a danger zone if they didn’t fully understand it themselves. They were more than aware that if something happened to her, Korea would face an irreversible crisis.
“No. Under no circumstances will your entrance be allowed.”
“And why not?!”
As she protested, the agents fell silent, unsure how to respond. Just then, a man approached her side. He wasn’t an agent, instead an Awakened individual working for the government and tasked with controlling the perimeter.
“Hey, kid. I know you’re the Saint of Tionis’s daughter, but this situation is dangerous.”
“That’s why I have to go in.”
“You want us to send you in alone, when even an S-class who went in to save the others got trapped? You’ve gotta be kidding.”
She was the only one on the planet who could stand against the silence gate. Yet even so, they were blocking her. That excessive hindrance only made Evangeline even more determined to break through, ready to resort to force if necessary.
A man spoke in slightly awkward Korean as he approached, “Enough. She’s absolutely necessary for this operation.”
“You are...?”
The man was wearing a baggy Hawaiian shirt paired with shorts and sunglasses. He raised his shades with a casual motion and met eyes with the Awakened individual who was blocking Evangeline.
It was none other than Chris Marten.
“Chris Marten, S-class Awakened from the United States.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Spare me the complicated interrogation—this is already cleared between the Hunter Association of Korea and the Sacred Group. I’m not here on behalf of the U.S., I came as a contracted Awakened under the Sacred Group.”
The agents and perimeter soldiers exchanged uncertain glances, surprised by the sudden appearance of one of the nation's top Awakened individuals.
“There are already dozens of people trapped inside. Kouna, the S-class Awakened dispatched by the Sacred Group, has also fallen out of contact. Am I wrong?”
The agent was confused. “How do you know that?”
“No time to explain, because we still don’t know how many could be dying even as we speak. Am I wrong?”
He wasn't.
“
Oh,
and there's this for you.” He handed over a piece of paper.
Once the agent took it and read what it said, his eyes widened. “This... is this for real?”
“You see that signature, don’t you? So move! If we’re going to save even one more person, we don’t have time.”
The agents exchanged glances and nodded.
“Understood. Please be careful. Also—”
An agent gestured, and another brought over two small devices. They looked like wristbands, but had an electronic component embedded in the center.
“Take these with you.”
“What are these?”
“They transmit vital signs for survival monitoring. As you know, this is a permanent gate, so there’s a channel that connects the inside and outside. These are made with special materials, so they won’t break easily.”
“Got it.” He casually strapped the glowing device onto his wrist, then handed the other one to Evangeline. “Here, Princess. Take one.”
“Don’t call me princess!”
“Alright, alright.” He smirked slightly, as if he found her cute, and reached his hand toward the rift.
Bzzzt!!
A faint spark erupted from the rift, swallowing the two of them in an instant.
“
Um...
Team Leader, are we really letting those two go in?”
The man gave a shrug in response. “If they’ve got the official paperwork, there’s no issue on our end.”
“
Phew.
Even so, I’m honestly shocked. Those wings that girl had were massive.”
“Right. The Saint of Tionis’s daughter... Looks like she’s a hybrid with a non-human race? Not sure exactly which species, though.”
However, they both knew that the power she possessed was far too great for such a young girl to normally carry.
“Like father, like daughter. They’re both unbelievable.” Having briefly muttered to himself with a sigh, the man turned back to the now-quiet surface of the permanent gate and shouted, “What are you all doing?! Get the perimeter control back in place! If anyone enters now, the entry coordinates will keep shifting, making it even more difficult to rescue them! Do not let anyone else in!”
There were dozens of B-class and A-class Awakened individuals within, along with two S-class Awakened who had gone in to rescue the others.
However, no one could reach them.
The situation was no trivial matter. The man known as Team Leader, Jung Tae-Soo, could only play that nothing catastrophic would happen under his watch.
* * *
The interior of the rift was bathed in the hues of sunset, as if twilight had just begun.
“Princess,” Chris called out.
“It’s Eva.”
“Oh, alright. I’ll call you whatever you prefer. Eva, then. How much do you know about the current situation?”
“Not much. Just that Kouna got caught up in it, and a lot of people are involved.”
“Right, then you’ve already got the gist of it. I’ll explain more about the gate as we move. Eva, just stick close to me while I handle the monsters.”
“Don’t worry about me,” she said as she extended her hand.
Sling!
At the same moment, a crimson longsword, the divine dragon sword Twilight, appeared in her grasp.
She gripped it tightly and then swung it through the air.
Slash!!
The sword instantly tore through several monsters that had been rushing toward Chris, slicing them apart before they could even make a sound.
“God damn, that's crazy...” Chris shuddered seeing the B-class monsters shredded into pieces with a single crimson flash, unable to even scream.
Anyone could tell that Evangelise was no ordinary kid. Those massive wings she’d shown earlier, along with the story of her taking down the dark priest of the silence gate, made that very clear. Yet even so, Chris hadn’t expected such a dramatic level of power.
‘Would I have even been able to react in time? That kind of attack isn’t something you can just block with your body.’
He let out a hollow laugh and licked his lips.
No matter how creepy and terrifying her strength may have been, she was one hell of a reassuring ally.
Like father, like daughter. At that point, it would’ve been weird to say that she wasn’t like her father.
“The fact that you and your father aren’t enemies of Earth might just be divine mercy.”
“
H-Hmph!
Let’s just hurry up!” Shocked by the sudden praise, Evageline stormed off with a flushed face.
“
Oh,
right. Evangeline.”
“Yes?”
“Could you say pretty please to me too, just this once?”
