The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1206
Chapter 1206
There were corpses of the unknown scattered all over the place. At the center of it all stood Reina.
She was the one who had created this mountain of bodies. She looked dangerously unstable.
“Get back! The holy power... I can’t control it!”
“You know exactly who you're saying that to, right?”
“I do! I know! But...
ugh...!!
” Just as she tried to say something, she writhed in pain.
She fought desperately to suppress it, but the power inside her had turned savage. It bared its fangs at anything that threatened her—even if that threat was the very being she was bound to.
Sling. Whoosh! Whoosh!!
Dozens of crimson energy blades rose around her before instantly launching toward Davey.
Each one carried enough power to be considered an Aura Blade. They surrounded both Davey and Shuneria from all sides, mercilessly targeting them.
[Divine Sword Art: Ego Blade]
[Cosmic Sword Dance]
She had unleashed the blade energy using the telekinetic blade control she’d learned from Davey.
The gleaming blades sparkled like dancing stars. Shuneria instinctively crouched down and screamed, squeezing her eyes shut. “
Kyaaa!!
”
She instinctively felt the fear of death. After all, she had seen those blackened energy blades once before. It was only natural for her to be terrified.
Davey reached toward her, realizing she had become a nuisance in the situation.
Thanks to him having taken a day to recover, his power had stabilized considerably. He knew that warping someone away would be no issue.
“Go back first. I’ll bring Reina back myself.”
“What do you mean—?!” She tried to protest, but before she could finish, her body had already disappeared in a flash of light.
Shing. Boom!!
Daved pivoted on the tips of his toes, spinning his body in a swift motion.
The moment blades reached him, he stomped his foot down hard and seized complete control of the surrounding area.
[Demonic Sword]
[Dying to Live, Living to Die]
A reinforced Super Ribbon covered the entire area. It was a maneuver she couldn’t possibly fail to execute.
Clang!!
A violent metallic screech rang out, and Reina’s attack was sealed in an instant.
The swords vanished as if they’d never even existed. However, as soon as the domain's effect faded, they reappeared just as quickly.
While Neina didn’t wield a physical sword, her talent with blades was nonetheless terrifying. Given that her true identity was that of an alternate Illyna, it wasn’t all that surprising.
“I don’t... want to attack you.”
“And so what? You're just going to stand here like this? Say something that makes sense.”
“I’ve lost Perserque along the way too...”
Davey deflected the incoming blades one by one as he spoke in a calm tone, “Perserque is with Goddess Freyja. Right now, it’s just you and me here.”
“What exactly happened? Why am I doing this...?”
“I’m sorry.” He had nothing else to say.
Davey thought he had maintained control, yet Reina, who bore his influence, clearly had not.
“I already killed so many people. I didn’t want you to see me like this...”
That was why she had severed all connections to him.
He spoke up, “She said she wanted to thank you.”
“What...?”
“That little girl I brought earlier.”
She wasn’t that much younger, but that didn’t matter.
“She was...”
“Yeah, the one you saved when you first started to change. She followed your traces, trying to find you.”
Reina heard that and stopped attacking, wrapping her arms tightly around herself. “I’ve been tainted again. Even now, something in my head keeps screaming at me to kill...”
“I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry.”
“Don’t be ridiculous! Who do you think made me like this?!” she screamed with a throat strained to its limit.
Sling!!!
Once again, crimson swords formed around her, all pointing at Davey.
Boom!!
Before he could realize what was happening, she already had the Divine Spear Longinus in her hands.
“What... What did you do to me?”
Her usual self and the twisted version within her were clashing. Longing and guilt toward Davey, mixed with the resentment and hatred toward him, were trying to break free.
Whatever her true feelings were, he believed the safest way to bring her back was to help her release everything.
“I have nothing to say about that, so don’t overthink it. Just let it all out, vent all your frustrations on me.”
Her face twisted in anguish.
“Please... don’t say things like that. You’re my savior! I owe you my life, and now I have to attack you like I’m trying to kill you...”
Davey let out a short laugh, and her expression stiffened in response.
“You think you can kill me?”
That one word seemed to push her over the edge.
“Your personality really is the worst!!” She fully surrendered to the destructive instinct that had been picking on her all that time.
Her dark, crimson energy surged even more violently, radiating outward.
To Davey, that wasn’t nearly enough to be truly threatening.
He dodged the pouring blades and rushed toward her.
Of course, she didn’t stand still. She really was trying to kill him, each strike of hers dangerously precise.
Clang! Clang!!
Longinus, made of the absolute immortal metal Helixium, held strong against Super Ribbon’s clashes.
“
Hmph!!
”
Her spear lunged straight for his heart.
Davey deflected it at the last moment, but her attacks didn’t stop.
Her rapid assault flowed so naturally, it almost made it questionable on whether her specialty was truly the sword and not the spear.
Clang!! Clang!!!
She held the initiative.
Davey continued to bait her into unleashing more of that dark crimson energy.
Perhaps because of that, her impulse pushed itself too far for a brief moment.
“
Hmmm.
”
Davey occasionally countered, as he couldn’t just keep on deflecting. However, she didn’t even try to avoid the attacks. She took them head-on as if she thought her body was some shield.
It was a poor choice, both for Reina and for Davey. Unfortunately, the corrupt power driving her only pushed her deeper into danger.
If he didn’t withdraw his sword now, he knew Super Ribbon might pierce her. But if he did, his whole plan of wearing down her energy would become even harder.
In the end, he retracted his sword, despite knowing what would happen. A gap opened in his defense.
She, of course, didn't miss it. Her impulses driving her to kill, she threw herself in recklessly once again. She used her own body to push through.
At the same time, the bladed edge of Longinus—now in a halberd form—flared gold.
[Paladia-style Galactic Spear]
[Tearing the Mantle]
Crack!!!
The strike came crashing down.
She had sought to learn the Paladia-style spear technique, and Davey had taught her. While she had yet to perfect her control of it, the amount of strength she exerted showed a high density of power.
A heavy pressure, like an enormous invisible beast bearing its claws, surged toward him. The attack came at him, leaving no room to dodge.
Seeing her charge like that, Davey gave a bitter smile.
Even if he blocked the spear, the black energy blades would follow. It was a level of attack that deserved to be acknowledged.
“
Haaah.
So this is how we’re doing it now.”
As the massive claws of light swept the area, Davey casually twisted Super Ribbon in his hand. Then, without any technique, he charged straight in while solely relying on his brute force.
The authority of Super Ribbon? He could throw that out the window.
Reina, in many ways, leaned more on raw power than skill. Davey had decided to break her specialty by confronting it directly in a similar manner.
[Longsword Ultimate Form]
[No-Named King]
In that instant, the sky split. The dull gray sky, due to the ash and smoke, was torn clean in half.
“
Haaah. Haaah.
”
Her combat ability was commendable. After all, she had once been the Hero of Light.
“I don't even know what to say... You just cut through it like that?” she asked, shocked.
“I’m holding back, believe it or not. I can tell the energy is gradually disappearing, but still... this is like drawing water from an infinite well.”
Davey had been waiting for the corrupted energy that had encroached her to burn itself out. Yet to his surprise, the corruption wasn’t depleting as much as he expected.
More accurately, after being exhausted, it seemed to regenerate.
If left alone, it’d only build up all over again, pushing her back to her instincts.
No authority or miracle alone could prevent her descent into a fallen angel. Davey hadn’t prepared his authorities, and neither did he have any special means to handle such a situation.
Fundamentally, it wasn’t a problem stemming from herself. It was her power source, which was Davey himself.
“I-It’s not all gone yet. My body isn’t moving on its own anymore, but...” Reina said in a weak voice. Now completely drained, she slumped over to Davey.
“Looks like I’m the problem.”
Ever since arriving in that dimension, his balance of power had been completely off. Perhaps it wasn’t a problem with the world itself, but rather that the already fragile tower of power within him had tilted when he came there.
“Then... I can’t go back to normal?” She looked up with a tearful expression. No one was suffering more than her at that moment.
“No. Absolutely not. First, let’s head back. Staying in this dimension won’t do you any good.”
At first, Davey had only wanted to warn the one abusing his dimension passage. Yet somehow, things had spiraled into a huge mess.
He tore open a dimensional gate to Heins Territory and gently picked up Reina, who had completely collapsed.
Though she had unleashed most of her power, taking a direct hit from the No-Named King had most likely drained every last drop of energy from her body.
In fact, the thousands of gray feathers that had once guarded her were now utterly shattered.
“What about... that girl?”
“I’ll take her with us too. She wouldn’t last long here, anyway. If she cares more about her siblings than her family pride, she’ll follow.”
Just as he took a step to go inside, someone stepped through the rift and emerged first.
Zzzt!!
“Goddess Freyja...” He muttered her name as he recognized her.
[You must not return until you’ve resolved your issue.]
“Why is that?”
[Will you trust me, just this once?]
She was the frustrating type that usually drove people crazy, but he knew that even just appearing like that and saying a few words caused her immense strain.
“First things first... She needs treatment. And a bath.”
Davey ultimately changed his destination.
After being dragged around outside for over a day, Reina was covered in dust. While her once-blackened garments had regained their pure whiteness, they were still dirty and disheveled from all the dust and grime she had picked up.
Only then did Reina seem to become aware of her condition. Her face turned bright red.
“
Um.
Do I smell?”
“Yeah. Like blood and dirt.”
“Seriously?!”
“It’s fine. Everyone smells.”
At his smile, she sighed and shook her head.
Then, with a blushing face, she muttered, “Don’t ever say that kind of thing in public. You’ll get slapped. Even if someone smells, the polite thing to do is say they don’t.”
“Got it. I’ll remember that.”
Seeing the two bicker again, Goddess Freyja looked a bit relieved.
“So. How bad is it right now?”
[It’s good you’re aware of it, but it still won’t be easy. Even if you realize it, reverting your changes will take a great deal of effort.]
“Can I ask just one thing?”
[?]
“What’s with this dimension? Why is it like this?”
[It’s an outer dimension. A lower one.]
His eyes widened slightly at her words.
[Same humans, different levels of dimensions. To you, this world might look inferior. That gap accelerates the change within you that was barely being held in balance.]
“Is that what happened to Thanatos?”
[It was a little different. But you...]
She paused, looking at her tablet. Seeing the letters glitch and flicker, she slammed the screen down on a nearby rock.
Zzzt!!
It began functioning again.
[You gained too much power, too fast.]
Most others wouldn’t have noticed a thing. Yet, since Davey held her authority and immense divinity, the differences were visible. Which was also what led to their current crisis.
Perhaps because of her revealing that information, her form turned half-transparent.
Davey’s eyes narrowed in worry. “Go back. You’re barely holding it together.”
If just saying a few lines left her that faint, then what she had just done was nothing short of back-to-back miracles.
“What... What should I do?” Reina asked quietly.
“What else? First, let’s find you somewhere to rest. We might end up having to go on dates or something.”
“W-What are you talking about?!” Blushing in his arms, Reina shouted at him.
Her face was a mix of fear and curiosity.
It seemed taking her back to Heins Territory was important, but if that wasn’t an option, then he had other plans in mind.
Davey activated the tracking spell he’d attached to Shuneria earlier on. He fixed the transport’s coordinates to her location and warped the space around them.
The mana waves were unstable, but they stabilized quickly.
As it did, Reina suddenly murmured, “...I killed a lot of people.”
“Yeah.”
“I don’t deserve to be called a Hero.”
“You’re retired, and now you’re worried about qualifications? What are you, stupid?”
Hearing his jab, Reina gave a bitter smile.
“
Sniff. Hrk.
”
Then, still held in his arms, she buried her face in his chest and sobbed quietly.
Watching her cry like that, he couldn’t help but feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on him.
He temporarily canceled the teleportation spell and chose to wait in silence until she calmed down.
No matter how different she’d become, at her core, she was still Illyna.
Illyna de Pallan, his beloved third wife.
Watching Reina cry like that, it was impossible not to see Illyna’s image overlapping with hers.
He figured it was probably time to do that thing he’d been waiting to do.
“When you’re done crying, I’ll do
that
for you.”
“
Hrk. Hrk.
”
Davey meant the special massage he had used in the past while opening up Illyna’s mana pathways.
Illyna had liked it—so with the same origin, he figured Reina would probably respond well too.
It was also because he didn’t have many ways to comfort her.
