The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1207
Chapter 1207
Davey could clearly feel the despair and the fear that Reina must have experienced not being able to control her own body.
He gently patted her trembling shoulders as she rested in his arms. He tried to sense the same corrupted power that was both inside him and within her.
His divine power and vitality rapidly coursing through her body gradually began improving her condition. In the course of doing so, he swept over the latent power inside her without leaving anything behind.
Her condition was just like pouring water into a bottomless jar.
Her power, once in a severe state of corruption, had regained some of its original hue. However, if Davey let himself become even slightly twisted again, or if her mental fortitude weakened, it wouldn’t be surprising for the corruption to surge back up and take over.
Even after depleting so much of it within her, the fact that it kept coming back made it hard to enact an effective solution instead of just stop-gap measures.
“Are you feeling any better now?” Davey asked carefully once he noticed her trembling had calmed.
With her head still buried, she responded in a tearful voice, “I’m sorry...”
Her quiet words were packed with emotion.
“
Hmm.
” Davey opened his Pocket Plane, pulled out a baseball cap, and placed it gently on her head with a downward tilt. He figured she probably didn’t want to show her tear-streaked face, and such an accessory was the only way he could think of to cover it for her without drawing further attention.
Reina flinched slightly at his gesture, but didn’t resist further.
Afterward, Davey silently lifted her onto his back.
The area around them was turned upside down with fragments of corpses scattered all over, but Davey walked at a pace neither fast nor slow without saying a word.
He wrapped a barrier around them to block the horrific stench of rotting and burning corpses from disturbing her healing process. Reina, seemingly comforted, quietly rested her face against his back.
“It’s warm. Broad, like my father’s...”
While she might have been older than him in physical years, when everything was taken into account, Davey’s age had long since become immeasurably great. Even though he had erased his memories, she must’ve known that the time he had spent in the Red Void was almost infinite.
They continued to walk for a long while.
Once she’d calmed down a bit, Reina asked, “Why am I like this?”
Her words carried a very clear intent.
“I’m forced to borrow power from Nightmare because of my dreams, and I just killed so many people simply because I can’t even control my own power.” She let out a bitter sigh. “I’ve never managed to protect anything properly...”
Hearing her berate herself, Davey gave her thigh resting on his arm a sharp bounce. Naturally, the jolt made her body rock hard, since she was piggybacked on him.
Startled, she instinctively clung tightly around his neck.
“
Kyaa!
What are you doing?!”
“What kind of ex-Hero mopes around like that? This isn’t your fault.”
‘It’s mine.’
He’d been far too complacent. That was on him.
Reina silently looked at his back, then buried her head again. “But... you still came to find me.”
Unsure how to respond, Davey just kept walking.
“I told you not to come, but honestly, I was happy that you came to find me. I feel lucky that even after I killed all those people, you still don’t hate me,” she confessed in a voice drenched in longing.
Just like always.
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
Her body flinched at those words.
“You’re not remembering something useless right now, are you?”
Davey already knew that she held an intense fear of the memory of the time when she couldn’t control her own body.
* * *
Unlike Davey, who calmly walked with Reina on his back, the conflict zone had become a heated topic because of her actions.
Of course it had.
The rebels had launched a guerrilla attack on a fortress before retreating, and during that retreat, a large number of imperial troops had given chase before running into a target.
However, the one they ran into wasn’t just any soldier—it had been Reina, who had already lost control of herself.
She had torn through them without mercy.
After the incident, the area where she appeared was reclassified as a danger zone, and neither side dared approach. Then suddenly, the very source of the problem, Reina, had suddenly vanished.
Naturally, it would’ve made sense for the imperial army in control of the area to begin a full-scale search. Yet in the end, they didn’t act.
It wasn’t like they could have, even if they wanted to. The commanding officer stationed at the fortress had gone into hiding, apparently paralyzed by fear.
His lieutenants, upon realizing that he’d only met his breakdown after meeting that official inspector Shuneria, tried to track her down. Alas, she too had vanished without a trace.
* * *
“So where exactly did you send her to?”
“Somewhere around here. We should see her soon.”
Davey and Reina strolled through the streets of a small territory where a small number of people lived.
“That's all fine, but... when are you going to put me down?”
“You can’t even walk right now.”
Hearing that, her face flushed bright red, and she buried herself deeper into his back. She seemed to be embarrassed by the occasional curious glances she got from passersby.
“Weren’t you planning to let her and I meet from the beginning? Now you're acting like it doesn’t matter either way...”
“As if I’d do that.” Davey chuckled at her question and moved toward a passerby.
After glancing briefly at the person, he raised his hand which suddenly held a large pouch of money.
Perhaps the person had thought Davey would be an easy target, since he was carrying someone on his back.
He didn’t care much about drawing attention, but anyone trying to steal from him should expect to be robbed in return.
“You just picked his pocket? At that moment?”
“He tried to steal from me first. I just turned it around on him.”
“Then... what did he take from you?”
“A pouch filled with rocks.”
Reina clicked her tongue at how thorough his preparations were. “
Tsk.
You planned that from the start.”
“I don’t have this empire’s currency, and long story short, we’re not going back home right away. It'll be at least a week before we leave.”
“That’s oddly specific,” she commented in a rather questionable voice.
“I have no idea what this dimension’s structure is, but for tuning imbalanced power it has proved to be ideal.”
It was where the problem started, but also where it could be fixed.
More importantly, since he couldn’t leave her alone, he had to stay by her side.
“Considering your condition, you're too unstable to do a dimensional warp right now.”
“Perserque’s going to be mad if she hears about this,” she argued.
“Probably not. Alright, we’re here.” Davey looked up at a run-down inn and smiled lightly.
“What is this place?”
“What do you think? We’re here to meet that kid. She’s sharp, I’ll give her that.”
Right after Davey launched her here, it seemed she’d managed to find a decent place to rest.
Thump! Thump!
Davey followed the tracking spell he’d placed on her and knocked on the door. Soon after, the door creaked open and a beautiful girl with vibrant-colored hair peeked out.
She blinked in surprise when she saw Davey and then Reina on his back.
“Y-You!”
“Save it. Didn’t you pick this place because you didn’t want any extra attention? Let’s go in.”
Realizing the situation, she gasped and quickly looked around. She then opened the door wider and grabbed his arm, swiftly pulling him inside before closing it.
“What happened?”
“What do you think? I brought her back.”
“She’s being called the Witch of the Plains right now! Rumors have spread from the fortress all the way here.”
“What is there for them to even recognize? Her clothes?”
When he’d met Reina on the plains, she’d been wearing a dark red dress. Since then, having regained the power of the Celestials, her attire had changed to a pure white outfit.
“Mind if I lay her down for a bit? She doesn’t look like it, but she’s in pretty bad shape.”
Shuneria quickly nodded and began tidying the bed. “All done.”
She seemed confused about the situation, but didn’t hesitate to act. She seemed to have a keen eye for those kinds of things.
“I’m so tired...” As soon as Reina lay on the bed, exhaustion took over her face.
Davey smiled gently and cracked his knuckles.
“W-Why are you doing that?” Reina asked shyly.
“I know you want to pass out from exhaustion, but first I need to understand your body’s condition.” With that, Davey began removing her outerwear.
“
Kyaa!
W-What are you doing?!” Shuneria shrieked in shock when she saw Davey undressing Reina.
“Calm down. Can’t you see this is medical work?”
“M-Medical?! What part of this is—”
Davey replied with a smile, “Illyna used to love this. You’ll probably find it to your liking as well.”
“W-What should I do?” Reina didn’t resist at all. It seemed she trusted Davey completely.
“Can you lie on your stomach?”
She turned over and buried her face in the pillow. Since she wasn’t wearing anything except for a light undergarment, the scene appeared suggestive, but Davey didn’t care.
“Alright, I’ll begin.”
“
Ugh.
”
She glanced up at him with a slight lift of her head, unable to entirely shake off her doubts about the situation. Her eyes carried a hint of wariness.
Normally, just the act of a man touching her clothes would’ve made her extremely uncomfortable, yet she didn’t show it at that moment.
On the other side of the room, Shuneria, shocked by what Davey and Reina were doing, had collapsed to the floor and covered her eyes with both hands. Her face was red enough that it looked like it was about to burst. Even so, she slightly spread her fingers to peek through them.
Davey didn’t know what kind of misunderstanding she was having, and neither did he care.
“Oh, right. This’ll hurt a little,” he added offhandedly.
“
Huh?
”
Crack!!
“
Kyaaa?!
” Reina jolted violently and screamed, but Davey had already cast a silence spell over the entire room.
Though she tried to wriggle away from his hands in a frenzy, he ruthlessly pressed down, stimulating her muscles and pressure points.
“
Ahh. Urrrgh!
” She let out strange moans and pained cries. She tried to muffle them by burying her face into the pillow.
Crack! Pop!
Each time popping sounds echoed, her body convulsed once more, until she couldn’t take it anymore and began to squirm away from him.
“W-Wait! Time out! T-This is too much!!”
“I told you—it’s going to hurt a little.”
“When doctors say it’ll hurt a little, that always means it’ll hurt like hell!!”
“
Oh?
You caught on?” Davey chuckled and pinned her down by straddling her back.
Her face turned pale, and she flailed her legs in an attempt to escape, but he continued mercilessly pressing into her pressure points and muscles.
Shuneria, who’d been peeking through her fingers with a flushed face, had since gone pale, still trembling and frozen in the corner.
Unable to escape, Reina continued to let out pitiful screams for the following ten minutes.
* * *
With Reina collapsed and asleep behind him, Davey took a seat at the table in the room.
“I know you’ve got a lot you want to say, but can you hold off until she wakes up? Once you say everything you want to, I’ll send you back.”
“You really don’t have to go that far...”
“I’m only doing this because I want to. Don’t worry about it.”
Though the impulse still stirred within him, he didn’t feel any strong hostility toward her. After all, it made no sense to feel hostile toward someone he actually liked.
Still, he couldn’t shake off the feeling that the way he looked at her wasn’t as one human to another.
“You carried her the whole way here?”
“Yeah.”
“She’s being called the Witch of the Plains. Are you sure this is okay?”
Davey had no intention of hiding her presence. “Well, no one’s recognized her. Probably because no one who saw her face made it back alive.”
All that was known about her was that she’d been slaughtering anyone who entered the plains and that she wore a dark red outfit.
“You’re bold. This is imperial territory, you know. From what I heard, she killed over a hundred imperial soldiers in just that one incident.”
“I know.”
“Then do you realize how dangerous what you’re doing is ri—”
“Hey. Miss.” Davey opened his Pocket Plane and pulled out a bottle of wine, pouring himself a glass. “I’ve already warned them. As long as the Empire doesn’t act recklessly again, I won’t make a move.”
“How arrogant... You talk as if you could take on the entire Empire alone.”
“I just don’t see why I should.”
That was a lie. The impulse was screaming at him to wipe the Empire out that second. Fortunately, his reason was still holding him back.
It wasn’t something he’d done with a full understanding. He simply acted on what was present, let the instinct take hold, and revealed a thirst for conquest.
After seeing Goddess Freyja’s tears, he was doing everything he could to restrain himself. That was the best choice he could make under the circumstances.
He’d already paid the price. So just this once, he decided to let it go.
Sure, he’d unintentionally killed the Emperor in the process. However, honestly, Davey considered that a stroke of luck.
More importantly, considering the state both he and Reina were in, he had no time to think about the Empire.
That was why he chose to show mercy to the empire that now had a dead emperor.
Well, of course, as long as they didn’t abuse the dimensional passage or cross the line again, he wouldn’t lay a hand on them.
* * *
Contrary to what Davey had said, Megalodria—the black dragon, Azure Sky's Storm Dragon King, and one of the three Mythical Beast Kings—did not return right away. Instead, it chose to linger in the world for a little while longer.
Originally, it’d planned to take advantage of the nature of Mythical Beast summoning and promptly return to its resting place. However, it discovered that certain parts of the continent it was summoned to were laced with highly concentrated radiation.
It couldn’t resist such a delicacy lying right in front of it! Absolutely not.
Besides, its contractor, Davey, had already trampled the human Empire. It figured a little radiation snacking on its part wouldn’t cause any trouble.
Megalodria feasted on the vast, invisible fields of radiation. It curled its body and polished its scales, relishing the rare feast it hadn’t enjoyed in ages.
Of course, it was also true that its presence had thrown the humans of that world into chaos. Just by roaming across the continent for a day, devouring all the radiation, Megalodria had already overwhelmed countless humans simply by its presence.
It hadn’t killed anyone—it’d just given them a proper scare. Yet when it came to Fear, its presence alone carried a weight that far exceeded imagination.
It figured it’d eat its fill and return quietly. That was the plan.
Just then, it sensed a group of humans approaching without a trace of fear.
“
Ohh,
Guardian of the Divine Protector!”
‘What the hell are they saying?’
The men wore the same style of clothing as the nobles from the Empire that Davey had crushed, and they shouted strange words as they approached Megalodria.
With its sharp senses, Megalodria quickly caught on that these humans wanted something from it.
As they continued saying something, Megalodria paused to consider its response.
Davey had already warned the Empire that as long as they didn’t cross the line again, he wouldn’t touch them. That meant Megalodria had no reason to stir up more trouble by flattening these fools.
If it were Groundburst Dragon Shandra Minea or Tyrant of the Undersea Behemoth, they wouldn’t have cared in the slightest.
Megalodria, however, was different. It liked to think of itself as very intelligent.
Still riding high from its satisfying radiation feast, it slowly opened its mouth.
[What is it, short-lived ones?]
