Chapter 473: Chapter 421 Guilty Conscience
Su Yingluo did not expect that what she was waiting for was not Bai Chengxi’s concern, but his even more ruthless setting of boundaries with her. Her previously excited mood suddenly plummeted, and she began to feel frightened and uneasy. Could it be that she really couldn’t win back Bai Chengxi’s heart anymore?
No, that’s impossible. He must still love her. How could a decade of feelings be erased just like that?
"Miss Su, I have conveyed the message. If there’s nothing else, I will leave now. Please take good care of yourself," the assistant said politely, nodding his head and ready to leave.
"Wait a minute." Su Yingluo suddenly hurriedly got out of bed, and although she was limping, she quickly caught up with the assistant. "Did Bai Chengxi really say that?"
"Not a word less," the assistant said, looking at her foot. "Miss Su, you should really rest properly."
"I want to see him. Tell him I want to see him, right now," Su Yingluo’s emotions gradually began losing control. She couldn’t believe that Bai Chengxi had already forgotten their past love. How could he explain remaining unmarried? At this point, why is he still putting on airs?
"Miss Su, I think what I said was already very clear: Mr. Bai said that you should not call him about anything anymore, and as for meeting, I think Mr. Bai would probably not agree," the assistant politely smiled at her. "Miss Su, I take my leave."
The moment the assistant left, Zhuo Yuqing immediately retreated to the corner, feeling somewhat thrilled as she stared at her phone. She had taken a few photos of a perfectly standing Su Yingluo, although a bit blurry due to nervousness, but it would not hinder the public from seeing the truth.
While she was taking photos, she heard Su Yingluo mention Bai Chengxi twice, but her voice was very soft, and Zhuo Yuqing couldn’t clearly hear what was said, probably something about the assistant poaching.
"Great, Yuqing, these photos you took can be sold for a great deal of money," Liu Lian said, holding her phone feeling like she just won a 500,000 prize. "This time, let’s see how that vile woman Tong Bi can refute this, see how she can still act maliciously. Your promotion to deputy editor is hopeful."
However, Zhuo Yuqing didn’t appear as happy as Liu Lian. Her first thought was about Bai Chengxi. If Su Yingluo was really poached by Xing Media, ing this news would definitely affect Xing Media’s interests. As a top star, Su Yingluo lying and deceiving the media and the public is unforgivable, not to mention the huge losses it would cause to her production crew.
Although her livelihood depended on ing news about entertainment stars, that doesn’t mean she lacks professional ethics, especially when it involves Bai Chengxi’s interests.
"Liu Lian, let’s not release this news for now," Zhuo Yuqing decided after some thought.
"Why?" Liu Lian looked puzzled. "Such a great opportunity to make the headlines, we can’t miss it. Don’t you want to be promoted to deputy editor?"
Zhuo Yuqing shook her head: "No, the person who just went in was Bai Chengxi’s assistant, I think the relationship and interests here are quite complicated. I should ask for Bai Chengxi’s opinion first."
Liu Lian, being a reasonable person, felt that made sense. "Okay, then you ask your husband first. If he doesn’t object, we can release the news. As for Su Yingluo, I really don’t like her anyway; too self-righteous and arrogant. Although I don’t understand why she would fake illness, her deceiving everyone really shows bad character."
Zhuo Yuqing returned the borrowed clothes and left. By the time she left, most of the ers outside had dispersed, with only two or three still waiting at the hospital entrance hoping to encounter some good news, perhaps even digging into Su Yingluo’s love life.
Liu Lian drove Zhuo Yuqing back home, where only the housekeeper Aunt Tian was present, just having returned from her holiday, busy cleaning.
"Madam is back." Aunt Tian, holding a mop, smiled and said, "Happy New Year."
"Happy New Year, Aunt Tian." Zhuo Yuqing took out a red envelope she had prepared, "This is for you."
Aunt Tian was flabbergasted and quickly waved her hands: "Madam, I can’t accept this, Mr. Bai already pays me a high salary."
"Aunt Tian, please take it. It’s the New Year, no need to push it back and forth," Zhuo Yuqing insisted, stuffing the red envelope into her pocket. "Just a little token, don’t mind if it’s not much."
Unable to refuse, Aunt Tian accepted it and said, "Thank you, Madam. You really are kind-hearted, even thinking about us servants."
"Don’t say that, Aunt Tian. The housemaid at our home watched me grow up; I never treated her as an outsider. To me, she is like a mother. I heard from Chengxi that you have been working at the Bai Family since he was a teenager, so you are like a mother to him too. It’s right to show you respect," Zhuo Yuqing said pleasantly while clasping Aunt Tian’s hand. "Right?"
Upon hearing this, Aunt Tian was moved to tears. She had always been anxious about Bai Chengxi’s marital status, but she also worried about him marrying a difficult and unreasonable wife, which would be trouble for her. Thus, she was both anxious and fearful about his marriage.
She never expected Zhuo Yuqing to be so gentle and devoid of the bad temperament typical of wealthy families. This made her feel incredibly lucky.
"Aunt Tian, I’m going up to sleep," Zhuo Yuqing decided not to call Bai Chengxi because he was busy, and instead went to her room to take a nap.
"Aren’t you going to eat anything?"
"I’ve already eaten." Zhuo Yuqing waved to Aunt Tian and went upstairs.
Bai Chengxi didn’t come back until evening. As soon as he entered, he saw the women’s leather boots on the shoe rack. He remembered that Zhuo Yuqing was wearing these boots in the morning, so it seemed she had already returned.
Thinking that she was currently at home, the usually cold and lifeless place suddenly felt warm.
"The master is back." Aunt Tian hurried over to take his coat, and glanced upstairs, "The madam said she was going to take a nap, I don’t know if she has woken up yet."
Bai Chengxi knew that she liked to sleep in. If no one disturbed her, her nap could last until four or five in the afternoon; he even wondered if she was the reincarnation of some "sleep deity" from her past life.
Bai Chengxi nodded, lightening his footsteps as he went upstairs.
Pushing open the bedroom door, the curtains were drawn making it dark as night inside. A dim light from outside the door helped him see.
Such a lazy pig, still sleeping.
Bai Chengxi walked over helplessly, sat beside the bed, and gently scratched her nose with his hand.
Zhuo Yuqing was having a beautiful dream, grunting uncomfortably a couple of times, trying to turn over and continue sleeping. But suddenly, her mouth was covered,
As she opened her eyes, she saw Bai Chengxi’s excessively handsome face, spotless and clean, while she just woke up, somewhat disheveled, instantly making her feel a bit embarrassed.
"You’re back." Zhuo Yuqing pulled up the covers to hide her face, leaving only her pair of black eyes visible. "Why so early?"
"Cancelled the dinner meeting; didn’t want to drink today." Bai Chengxi sat beside her, he didn’t finish his sentence. Actually, he wanted to come home early to see her, so he cancelled the dinner. Normally he’d be happy to attend any event, but suddenly Bai Chengxi became very homey.
He used not to like returning home much, dealing with all sorts of people every day, often drinking until dawn, except for work, living a life of bewilderment. But now it was different, when he had moments of respite during work, he would suddenly think of her, today he had looked at her photo on his phone several times, as if he could never tire of it.
"You’re the pig." Zhuo Yuqing gently bit his shoulder.
Bai Chengxi chuckled, "Let’s go."
When they came downstairs, Aunt Tian had already prepared the meals.
As soon as Zhuo Yuqing sat down, she couldn’t wait to bring out her phone and hand it over: "I have some exclusive, bombshell news for you."
"What?" Bai Chengxi wasn’t interested in bombshell news; he had seen too much of it and was immune, so when he heard her words, he barely lifted an eyelid, "Let’s hear it."
He was willing to listen only to satisfy her little excitement, her look of knowing a big secret while he was clueless, inexplicably lifted his mood.
Zhuo Yuqing opened her phone’s gallery, brought up the photo and showed it to him: "Look."
Bai Chengxi immediately saw Su Yingluo talking to someone. Although that person was facing away from the camera, he recognized them at once—it was his assistant.
Bai Chengxi’s expression subtly changed, he glanced at Zhuo Yuqing, suddenly feeling a bit fearful, afraid that she knew about his past, and scared she would mind or disdain.
"That’s Su Yingluo." Zhuo Yuqing’s following words let Bai Chengxi silently exhale, "That person is your assistant, right?"
Bai Chengxi felt his emotions were like a roller coaster, fluctuating rapidly. He had just been relieved that she didn’t know about Su Yingluo’s relationship with him, yet immediately after she brought up the assistant.
"Actually..." Just as Bai Chengxi was about to explain about the assistant, Zhuo Yuqing leaned over mysteriously as if she had discerned everything, and said, "I know, you want to headhunt Su Yingluo to Stardom, right? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone."
Bai Chengxi: "..."
Why does it feel like he has a guilty conscience?
