Chapter 517

Chapter 517: Chapter 457: Happiness Comes So Unexpectedly
When Bai Chengxi heard that there was something significant, he thought it was a major event at home and hurriedly asked: "What’s the matter, Grandma?"
"It’s important, very important, you hurry back home. Alright, that’s it." Having said that, Madame Bai hung up the phone hastily.
Bai Chengxi was utterly confused, completely unaware of what the situation was. Nonetheless, considering the old lady’s urgency, he didn’t dare to delay and immediately left his work to rush home.
As a result, he encountered Zhuo Yuqing, who had just gotten out of the car in front of the house. They stared at each other for a while, and then both spoke at the same time.
"Grandma?"
"Grandma?"
After that, they both laughed; it seemed they were called back by the old lady too.
Today, Madame Bai made a special trip to visit her grandson’s house, only to hear from Aunt Tian that Zhuo Yuqing’s appetite had been particularly good recently. As someone with experience, Madame Bai knew that some girls get nauseous and vomit when pregnant, while others develop a huge appetite, eating more than usual.
Once Madame Bai made this association, her heart was overjoyed. She quickly called Bai’s mother over and also brought the Bai Family’s family doctor along.
When Bai Chengxi and Zhuo Yuqing entered the room and saw all the people there, both of them were somewhat baffled, not knowing what was important enough to cause such a commotion.
"Yuqing, you’re back." Madame Bai quickly pulled Zhuo Yuqing to her side to sit down, holding her hand and sizing her up, "It’s so cold, you must wear more clothes."
After speaking, she glanced at the shoes Zhuo Yuqing had just taken off at the door and said with a satisfied smile, "It’s good you’re wearing flat shoes; they won’t slip and you won’t fall."
Zhuo Yuqing was completely baffled by the old lady’s words, and her smile was somewhat strained, "Grandma, I don’t really like wearing high heels."
"That’s good, that’s good, although women look more elegant in high heels, it depends on the situation, doesn’t it? Like in your current state, it’s not suitable for you to wear high heels."
Zhuo Yuqing blinked, still not quite understanding the situation, and could only look at Bai Chengxi discreetly, raising her eyebrows to ask if he knew something. However, Bai Chengxi just shook his head at her, indicating he was also in the dark.
It wasn’t until the Bai Family’s doctor came out of the bathroom that Madame Bai eagerly called out, "Dr. Sun, come here and check on our Yuqing."
Dr. Sun walked over with a smile and sat beside Zhuo Yuqing, "Come, Yuqing, let me have a look at you."
"Look at what?" Zhuo Yuqing obediently laid her hand on her knee to let Dr. Sun take her pulse, still showing a puzzled face, which made Bai’s mother laugh out loud. Indeed, the young have no experience.
After Dr. Sun carefully took Zhuo Yuqing’s pulse for a while, he finally turned to Madame Bai with a smile and said: "Congratulations, Madame, you’re going to have a great-grandson."
Upon hearing this, Madame Bai was so overjoyed she couldn’t close her mouth, bowing in all directions, "Thank heavens, thank heavens, I finally get to hold a great-grandchild in my lifetime."
Bai’s mother too was all smiles, just as happy as Madame Bai. It didn’t matter whether it was a grandson or granddaughter; she adored them both immensely.
Even if Zhuo Yuqing was slow to catch on, she fully understood what was going on. She was a mix of surprise and amazement, her expression complex as she looked towards Bai Chengxi.
Bai Chengxi remained calm, unlike the other women who were in a frenzy of joy, just smiling and nodding at her.
Zhuo Yuqing truly hadn’t expected to be pregnant. Since Bai Chengxi had stopped smoking and drinking, they hadn’t taken any precautions but didn’t insist either, letting nature take its course.
And now, the child had come so unexpectedly.
Bai’s mother quickly took out her cellphone to call Bai’s father, while Madame Bai started notifying everyone, acting like a telegraph operator going from door to door.
"Oh my, tell her second aunt, Yuqing is pregnant."
"Tell her oldest aunt, don’t you deal in bird’s nests? Send some fine ones over right away, Yuqing is pregnant."
Everyone was making phone calls in haste, and Zhuo Yuqing couldn’t help but lean closer to Bai Chengxi; he instinctively took her hand, holding it tightly in his.
"Bai Chengxi, am I really pregnant?" Zhuo Yuqing asked quietly, "Is that doctor really that good, to know just by feeling my hand?"
Bai Chengxi chuckled, "Dr. Sun is a retired professor who formerly specialized in traditional Chinese medicine, very renowned even overseas. Her pulse diagnosis is more accurate than hospital machines."
With that reassurance from him, Zhuo Yuqing was certain that she was indeed pregnant. She raised her shiny eyes and asked him, "Bai Chengxi, are you happy?"
Bai Chengxi clenched her hand tightly and gave a forceful grunt.
Before Zhuo Yuqing could figure out whether he was happy or not, the old lady who had finished the phone call came over with quick, small steps: "Yuqing, let’s go, we should head to the hospital now for a detailed checkup."
Through the old lady’s enthusiasm, Zhuo Yuqing naturally couldn’t let down her good intentions, so the whole family got in the car and drove to the hospital.
Dr. Sun was right, Zhuo Yuqing was indeed pregnant, and it had already been over forty days.
"This silly girl, not even aware she’s pregnant," the old lady scolded. "You young people just don’t take your health seriously. When I first got pregnant, I knew right away and rushed to the hospital for a checkup."
"Mom, Yuqing always has such good living habits, it’s fine even if she didn’t know. On the other hand, Chengxi, with his smoking and drinking, I’m worried that it might harm the child’s health," Bai’s mother worriedly glanced at her son, "I mean, come on, what’s with all the drinking and smoking? What good are those things? Really, if the child isn’t healthy, you’ll see how I deal with you."
Zhuo Yuqing hurriedly stepped in to speak for Bai Chengxi: "Mom, Chengxi has quit smoking and drinking a long time ago."
"When did that happen?" Even the old lady was shocked. She knew her grandson better than anyone; he’s been inseparable from cigarettes and alcohol ever since middle school. He got caught by his dad twice, got whipped with a belt till he howled in pain, but he didn’t quit smoking a bit. Eventually, everyone simply stopped bothering about him, letting him be, and surprisingly, after nearly twenty years of smoking, he quit just like that.
The old lady glanced meaningfully at her daughter-in-law, who was whispering to Bai Chengxi. It seems that their entire family’s influence was no match for Yuqing alone.
Yuqing’s pregnancy seemed to leave her grandson outwardly calm, but inside, he must be overjoyed. It’s just that as a man, he’s not as good at expressing his emotions through his facial expressions.
After leaving the hospital, Bai Chengxi took everyone to Xiangshan Club for a meal. Bai’s father also hurried over. His joy at becoming a grandfather kept his mouth turned up in a smile throughout the meal, chatting with Bai’s mother about significant and trivial things, all of which seemed hilarious.
When the family finally dispersed and the couple returned to their own home, Aunt Tian was in the kitchen making soup.
Zhuo Yuqing still felt a bit bewildered. While showering, she stared at her flat stomach, and zoned out for a while, thinking that although it looked so flat, a little life was already growing inside. This little being was her and Bai Chengxi’s child; she was going to be a mother.
Zhuo Yuqing sketched out the baby’s little face in her mind and found that its features closely resembled Bai Chengxi’s; chubby and white, quite adorable.
"Not done showering yet?" Bai Chengxi pushed the door open just in time to see Zhuo Yuqing smiling at her reflection, her face radiating happiness.
She saw him through the mirror and immediately wrapped herself in a bathrobe, her face flushing as she scolded him, "I just finished showering, why didn’t you knock on the door?"
"I called out to you, but you didn’t answer. I got worried and came in," Bai Chengxi hugged her from behind, imagining their child and feeling his heart melt.
"Wife," Bai Chengxi hugged her tightly, his chin resting against her fair neck, nuzzling like a child, "I’m going to be a dad."
Although he didn’t show great excitement, his tenderness and the infatuated gentleness in his eyes, filled with strong longing and anticipation for the future, told Zhuo Yuqing that he was definitely overjoyed about the child’s arrival.
She felt the same; both new to parenthood without any experience, but just the thought of their adorable little one brought their hearts even closer.
"Bai Chengxi, isn’t it all happening too fast?"
"Hmm?" Bai Chengxi’s hands gently caressed her abdomen.
"We haven’t known each other for long, and now we’re having a child, and we’re also about to have the wedding. When I think about it, it seems you haven’t even proposed to me yet?" Zhuo Yuqing looked at him through the mirror, "Am I at a loss here?"
"I’m already yours, aren’t you the one who’s gained?"
"You?" Zhuo Yuqing looked at him disdainfully, "You were unwanted, and I picked you up out of pity. You should be grateful to me, that’s what."
Before they could even proceed to the next step, the phone in the bedroom started ringing insistently.
Bai Chengxi didn’t intend to answer, but the persistent ringing made Zhuo Yuqing nudge him, "Go answer the phone, it might be an emergency."
"What kind of emergency could it be? I bet it’s trouble," Bai Chengxi grudgingly returned to the bedroom, glanced at the caller ID, and felt a mix of annoyance and helplessness, "Mom."
"Chengxi, what are you doing?" Bai’s mother asked cheerfully on the other end.
"Mom, I’m about to go to sleep, what’s the matter?" Bai Chengxi was somewhat scratching his head.
"Well, it’s like this." Bai’s mother seemed hesitant and then spoke with a bit of embarrassment, "Dr. Sun said the first three months of pregnancy are a risky period, so you guys better not do that kind of thing."
Zhuo Yuqing emerged from the bathroom to see Bai Chengxi with a darkened face. She pointed at the phone he had just put down and asked, "Who called?"
