The Scheming Ex-Husband's Courtship-Chapter 524 - 462 His Trust

Chapter 524

Chapter 524: Chapter 462 His Trust
Mu Chenxi covered her face, regretting so much her intestines were turning green, feeling nothing to be congratulated about.
First, she was misunderstood to be Li Xiaoming’s girlfriend, then she was ridiculed by the whole school while cheering in the basketball gym. She indeed wanted Professor Luo to remember her, but not in such a bizarre way.
Since the loudspeaker incident, Mu Chenxi had become a shrinking turtle, only daring to show her face after the scandal had died down.
It was the weekend with not much happening at school, so Mu Chenxi went home and hid away.
After sleeping in until ten in the morning and just having washed her face, Luo Meijuan handed her a lunchbox: "Xixi, take this box of dumplings to the hospital for your dad, he has been working overtime this week and hasn’t had a proper meal."
"Is dad really that busy?" Mu Chenxi grabbed dumplings with her bare hands from the plate and said with a mouth so full it was bulging: "The hospital is too exploitative, people aren’t machines, how could they keep running non-stop?"
"Your dad is up for a professional title evaluation, it’s tough but there’s nothing we can do. Once he gets the promotion, it won’t be so hard," Luo Meijuan passed her chopsticks, "Eat slowly, don’t always be in such a rush, I’ve put the dumplings in a thermos."
"Got it." After eating the dumplings, Mu Chenxi rode her bike to deliver the meal to Mu Kaihua. Their family lived in a residential building assigned by the hospital in the early years, very close to the hospital. Mu Kaihua usually walked to work, and Mu Chenxi, too lazy to walk, bought a bicycle when she was in primary school. She has changed it four or five times since then, and this one she got during her second year in high school, even giving it a name called "Erzong".
Mu Chenxi pedaled, with earphones on, humming softly along with the music.
The volume of the music was not loud, and she sharply heard a screeching brake noise coming from ahead, causing her to hastily yank off her earphones. After pedaling another dozen meters or so, she saw an elderly person lying by the roadside, with vegetables and fruits scattered all around, while a white sedan, after a short pause, saw the driver step on the gas without even getting out of the car and fled the scene.
Mu Chenxi quickly parked her bike by the roadside, and by this time, a few pedestrians had already gathered around but no one was offering help.
Without overthinking, Mu Chenxi rushed to help the elder. Although she was a novice at the medical school, the belief in saving lives and helping the injured instilled in her since childhood made her go to the aid without hesitation.
After sending the elderly person to the hospital, Mu Chenxi remembered she had rushed out in a cab, leaving her bike and the thermos with dumplings at the scene of the accident.
She wanted to go back and get her things but was stopped by the hospital staff.
"Young girl, you can’t leave. The person is still being resuscitated inside, and you have to bear the costs," the nurse grasped hold of Mu Chenxi, "The police will be here in a moment, you need to explain everything to them."
"I... I didn’t hit the person," Mu Chenxi cried out in injustice; she had simply passed by and taken the elderly to the hospital, but the nurse, as if fearing she would flee, stood by watching her.
Mu Chenxi had no intention of abandoning the situation; she was also very concerned about the elder’s condition. She simply wanted to retrieve her bike and thermos, otherwise, if the bike was lost and the food was not delivered, she would be scolded when she returned home.
But the nurse guarded her like a thief, estimating she couldn’t leave any time soon, so Mu Chenxi simply sat down to wait for the resuscitation outcome.
Mu Chenxi was sitting on a chair in the hallway, nearly falling asleep, when suddenly she heard hurried footsteps. Out of boredom, she looked over and saw a tall figure that immediately lifted her somewhat despondent spirits.
It was Luo Shangqing.
He was wearing a white coat, with hands pocketed, flanked by a few people speaking to him. His expression was serious throughout, his chin etched with sharp lines, and with deeply furrowed brows, looking quite different from his languid and refined demeanor in the classroom.
Mu Chenxi stared blankly at him, realizing this was what he looked like at work. She heard he could have supervised graduate students but chose to teach instead, with classes three days a week, and spent the rest of the time in the hospital, which was run by the Luo Family.
"What happened, who called the police?" A few officers suddenly appeared in the hospital corridor, followed by two or three people who looked like family members. The nurse had just found a missing person’s card on the elder, so she called the elder’s family.
"I made the call." A nurse quickly came over, "The elder being resuscitated inside was injured in a hit-and-run, and this young lady brought him here."
The officer glanced at Mu Chenxi, "Did you hit and injure the person?"
As soon as the words were uttered, a few emotionally charged family members rushed forward, with one forty-something woman being the most aggressive: "You’re so young, do you walk without eyes? Let me tell you, if my dad is alright that’s best, but if anything happens to him, I’m going to make you pay with your life."
Mu Chenxi wanted to defend herself, but those people were like wasps stinging, not giving her a chance to speak.
As she was being pushed into a corner, Mu Chenxi had no choice but to shout out loud: "I didn’t hit anyone, I just happened to pass by and brought the old man to the hospital."
But her words only quieted the chaotic scene for a few seconds before various accusations came flooding back.
Mu Chenxi felt extremely aggrieved; she had clearly done a good deed, yet she was wrongfully accused and even the police wanted to investigate her. Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but feel the rims of her eyes turning red.
She didn’t know who pushed her, but Mu Chenxi’s footing became unstable, and she started falling straight backward as though destined for a big tumble. Just when she thought she was going to crash down, a strong hand clapped onto her shoulder, steadying her wobbling body with a slight force.
His body carried a faint scent of medicine, with an added masculine freshness. Every time he stood at the podium to lecture, Mu Chenxi could smell it—it was all too familiar to her.
She turned around, somewhat surprised, and indeed saw Luo Shangqing. His face was expressionless as ever, and from her angle, she could perfectly see his sharp chin and clearly defined profile.
"This is a hospital, what’s all the commotion about?" His cool and commanding voice quieted the once chaotic scene without him raising his voice.
The patient’s relative eyed the name tag on his chest and asked, "Are you in charge here?"
Luo Shangqing didn’t answer her question but instead said to the policemen, "The truth of the matter will become clear when the elderly patient regains consciousness. This is a hospital, please remain quiet."
His words were firm and commanding, and even the police couldn’t argue. Everyone reluctantly found seats and sat down to wait patiently.
Mu Chenxi cautiously glanced at him and whispered, "Professor Luo, I didn’t hit the person."
Luo Shangqing nodded lightly and removed his hand from her shoulder, "Don’t be afraid, your teacher is here."
That simple sentence instantly brought tears to Mu Chenxi’s eyes. She had not felt so wronged even when accused earlier, but his trust made her feel like everything was worthwhile.
It wasn’t long before the emergency room light turned off, and several doctors wheeled the elderly patient out. The patient had not yet awakened, but the doctors said the injuries weren’t too severe—aside from two fractures, there were no internal injuries found.
But because the elderly patient was still unconscious and couldn’t clarify the incident, the relatives were relentless and refused to let Mu Chenxi leave.
Mu Chenxi understood their feelings. Medical expenses for the elderly patient’s injuries were not minor, and if she were indeed the perpetrator, letting her leave just like that would be unjustifiable both morally and logically.
So, she sat quietly in the hallway waiting for the elderly patient to wake up.
"How did you get here?" Luo Shangqing suddenly asked.
"By bike." After saying this, Mu Chenxi suddenly patted her forehead, "Oh dear, I left my bicycle at the accident site, along with my dad’s dumplings."
"I’ll take you to get them." Luo Shangqing went over, said something to the policemen, and they readily let her go. Although the relatives were unwilling, the police had nodded in agreement, so they said nothing.
Luo Shangqing went back to his office to change out of his white coat, put on a beige mandarin collar overcoat, took his car keys and approached Mu Chenxi who was dumbfoundedly standing there: "Let’s go."
Mu Chenxi hurriedly followed his brisk strides. From behind, his figure appeared tall and upright, exuding a sense of security so intoxicating that she was spellbound, not even aware when Luo Shangqing had stopped. She ran right into his back, the collision leaving her dizzy and disoriented.
Luo Shangqing turned around to see Mu Chenxi rubbing her nose and the corners of his mouth curved into a smile: "Get in the car."
"Oh." Mu Chenxi flushed, extremely embarrassed. She always seemed to make a fool of herself in front of Professor Luo, and she felt her impression on him was getting worse by the day.
Being alone with Professor Luo in his private car was something she had dreamed of, but as the soothing music filled the vehicle, Mu Chenxi couldn’t feel happy. What if, when the old man awoke, he insisted that it was she who hit him? Incidents like these weren’t rare nowadays.
"There’s surveillance on that stretch of road," Luo Shangqing mentioned casually as if he was concentrated on driving.
"How do you know?" Mu Chenxi turned to him in surprise, her admiration for him soaring once again.
Luo Shangqing clearly had no intention of answering her naive question and lightly stepped on the gas, quickly arriving at the accident site Mu Chenxi mentioned.
From a distance, Mu Chenxi saw her little bike parked by the road, beside it an old lady stood.
"That one, my two-wheel darling." Mu Chenxi opened the car door and dashed out. Suddenly, the back of her collar was yanked, she stumbled, and nearly fell. Turning back in confusion, she looked at Luo Shangqing who was still holding onto her, "Professor...?"
"Let’s collect evidence before the scene is disturbed."
Mu Chenxi blinked, "Professor Luo, you’re so certain I wasn’t the one who hit the person?"
