Chapter 536: Chapter 472 Are You Stupid
Mu Chenxi slept until the sun was high in the sky; if not for Kong Tai insistently licking her face, she might have slept until it turned dark again.
"Damn Kong Tai, get off." Mu Chenxi stretched a hand out from under the covers, pushing Kong Tai’s cat face away with disgust.
Kong Tai, feeling restless on the bed, turned a couple of circles before starting to meow persistently, finally annoying Mu Chenxi enough that she abruptly sat up, grabbed him into her embrace, and vigorously rubbed his long fur: "You this damn cat, believe it or not, I’ll sell you to a barbecue stall."
Kong Tai meowed innocently,
"Kong Tai, are you hungry?" Mu Chenxi belatedly lifted him up, gazing into his pair of crystal-like shining cat eyes.
Kong Tai immediately meowed joyfully; he was already so hungry he couldn’t remember his own name.
"Alright, I’ll go get you some cat food in a bit." Yesterday before leaving, Luo Meijuan specifically reminded her to buy food for Kong Tai; this aristocratic cat has been eating only cat food since it was a kitten, occasionally enjoying fish specially prepared by Luo Meijuan when in a good mood.
Mu Chenxi got out of bed, with hair messy like weeds, and went to the bathroom. But she soon came back, picked up her phone, and then closed the door again.
There’s a condition called "Toilet Smartphone Syndrome," which means having to look at your phone while sitting on the toilet.
Mu Chenxi opened the "Top Four Divas" chat group. There were already more than a hundred messages. Xinyu was still on the train and would get off in two more hours. She’s been chatting with an especially handsome guy for the whole trip.
Susu didn’t go home but instead joined a Japanese language class in Qi Hao’s city; classes begin tomorrow, and the two have rented a small place to live in temporarily.
"Susu, you guys are setting up house so quickly, are you planning to marry right after graduation?" Xinyu teased.
Susu sent a sweet smiley face: "That’s my plan, but Qi Hao says we need to wait until after graduation and find jobs, settle life down first. He doesn’t want me to suffer through tough days worrying about livelihood after marriage."
"Your Qi Hao is really thoughtful. By the way, Fourth Sister, you overslept again, didn’t you? The sun’s borne down on your butt, hasn’t it?"
Mu Chenxi just wanted to secretly check the chat, didn’t expect her sneak peek to be sharply detected, Xinyu added another comment: "Are you sneaking a peek while squatting on the toilet with your phone?"
Mu Chenxi glanced around and typed a line: "Did you install a camera in my house?"
"Don’t flatter yourself,
"I haven’t fully developed yet, I’ve been eating papaya recently." Mu Chenxi replied indignantly.
Quan Jin couldn’t help but chime in: "Keep eating; it’s iPad2 now, after you eat, it’ll turn into an Air, getting thinner and thinner."
Mu Chenxi sent a string of angry emoticons, while Kong Tai outside meowed mournfully twice.
"Stop talking, Kong Tai needs to eat; I have to go out to buy cat food. I’m just his nanny and foster mom."
After taking care of personal business, Mu Chenxi heated up a cup of milk and gulped it down. As she was leaving, she casually grabbed a slice of bread and clamped it in her mouth.
As she opened the door just a crack, suddenly, she remembered there was a bag of trash in the kitchen Luo Meijuan had repeatedly told her to throw out. Mu Chenxi didn’t feel like taking off both shoes, so she slipped off only one and hopped on one foot to the kitchen. Just as she got the trash, a dark shadow suddenly flashed from inside to the door and then disappeared through the gap.
Mu Chenxi was half a beat slow in her reaction. When she realized the escaping shadow was Kong Tai, she immediately hopped to the door, slipped on her other shoe, and dashed out furiously.
Kong Tai usually nested at home, sleeping and eating. Luo Meijuan didn’t let him wander outside, fearing he’d mate with a tom and have kittens. Mu Kaihua has a mania for cleanliness; it was already quite accommodating to tolerate one Kong Tai, and he absolutely wouldn’t allow a few more kittens in the house.
Kong Tai felt stifled, so he seized this rare opportunity to bolt for freedom.
Mu Chenxi dashed down the stairs and hustled to the building entrance, gasping for breath. Looking all around, there was no trace of Kong Tai.
"Kong Tai." Mu Chenxi shouted out to the empty space a few times. At home, a single call would usually bring forth Kong Tai lazily from wherever it was nesting, but now, no matter how hoarsely Mu Chenxi called, there was no sign of him.
Anxious and angry, Mu Chenxi had no other choice. She started searching throughout the community, not missing a single spot that could hide a cat, be it a bush or a trash can.
Some known neighbors in the community helped her search as well. After several rounds, they found nothing.
"Xiaoxi, your cat probably ran outside the community. Kept in for too long, the outside world so novel, it might have gone wild." A neighbor tried to comfort her kindly: "Don’t worry too much. Maybe after it’s had its fun, it’ll come back on its own."
At this moment, Mu Chenxi had no choice but to believe that Kong Tai would return on its own and just sat at the entrance of the building corridor waiting, dry and restless.
After about an hour, Mu Chenxi suddenly remembered she had left her bag on the shoe cabinet; she had inadvertently placed it there when she went to take out the trash earlier. The house keys were still in that bag. Missing only the keys might not have been enough to dampen her spirits, but realizing her wallet was also in her backpack truly made her feel disheartened.
What to do? Kong Tai was lost, she was locked out, and now she was penniless. It’s like crying out to heaven and earth without any response.
No, her phone; she still had her phone. The phone wasn’t in her bag but in her coat pocket.
Mu Chenxi hurriedly took out her cell phone and dialed the numbers of two high school classmates from the contact list. As it turned out, both of them were traveling out of town, nowhere near Aus City—no hope for immediate help.
After hanging up, Mu Chenxi thought, why not just wait here for Kong Tai? If it came back, she could go to a neighbor’s house, borrow some money, and find a locksmith. However, her home’s door lock was very unique; damage to it would certainly be noticed by her parents. Yet if she didn’t break it, was she destined to be without a home?
Mu Chenxi continued to wait until sunset and still no sign of Kong Tai. The longer she waited, the more anxious and worried she became. Just as she was about to despair, her phone suddenly rang in her pocket.
Mu Chenxi took out her phone and glanced at the number—it was unfamiliar. She assumed it was a courier; Luo Meijuan had mentioned ordering something online before she left and had left Mu Chenxi’s number.
Mu Chenxi answered the phone and blurted out before the other person could speak, "Please deliver it to the community security gate, thank you."
There was a pause on the other end, and just as she was about to hang up, the voice finally spoke slowly, "It’s me."
Mu Chenxi’s heart jolted, and she sat up straight in an instant. She never expected that Luo Shangqing would call her. But how did he get her number?
"Professor Luo?!" Mu Chenxi felt a mix of anxiety and awe, "What’s the matter?"
"I suddenly realized that I didn’t stamp the calligraphy I gave you yesterday. When will you have time..." Luo Shangqing’s voice trailed off and then stopped, as he faintly heard sobbing sounds coming from the other side of the phone, each sound full of distress.
"Mu Chenxi?" Luo Shangqing asked tentatively, "What’s wrong?"
Mu Chenxi didn’t know what was happening to herself. Although she was very worried about Kong Tai and her current predicament was somewhat bleak, she was never the kind to cry easily, even tending to be quite tough. But upon hearing Luo Shangqing’s voice, she suddenly felt the world was against her, and the repression in her heart uncontrollably burst forth.
Hearing the crying that was decidedly from Mu Chenxi, Luo Shangqing’s brows furrowed, "Where are you?"
Mu Chenxi sniffled and wiped away her tears fiercely, "I’m downstairs from my apartment."
Luo Shangqing didn’t ask why, he just hung up the phone.
Listening to the disconnected tone on the line, Mu Chenxi was stunned for a while before belatedly realizing what she had just done. She actually cried in front of Professor Luo. She, the proverbial tough-as-nails roach, had shed tears?
Mu Chenxi felt utterly terrible, her mood plummeting. Professor Luo must think she was putting on an act.
"Xinyu, why are you still sitting here?" Auntie Zhang, a neighbor, had already returned from buying dinner ingredients and saw her sitting in the corridor, "You’ll catch a cold sitting like this. Come to my place to warm up and have some dinner."
"Thank you, Auntie Zhang, but I can’t leave. If I go and Kong Tai comes back, it won’t be able to find me." Mu Chenxi moved aside, "You don’t have to worry about me, Auntie Zhang."
"This child, really. It’s just a cat; if it’s lost, it’s lost. Your health is more important." Auntie Zhang couldn’t persuade her and had to go upstairs. Soon after, she came down with two buns, "You haven’t eaten all day, right? I made these at noon. I’ve warmed them up in a thermal wave oven; just make do with these for now, and I’ll bring you down some dinner later."
Mu Chenxi was exceedingly grateful to Auntie Zhang and after she left, holding the buns made her feel even sadder. Although she was too worried about Kong Tai to feel like eating, her stomach was indeed protesting.
Luo Shangqing had just parked his car when he saw the girl sitting at the entrance of the corridor, leaning against the stairs, wearing the same olive green coat as yesterday, now burying her head into a bun.
This scene suddenly made him feel a sense of compassion. He strode forward.
"Mu Chenxi."
Mu Chenxi looked up to suddenly notice a pair of men’s casual leather shoes and the hem of a brown pair of trousers under her eyelids, and then her gaze followed upward to meet Luo Shangqing’s lowered eyes.
She blinked, thinking she was dreaming, "Professor... Professor Luo?"
Luo Shangqing saw her red eyes and the slightly purple-tinged ears from the cold; the bun in her hand had clearly cooled off. His heart felt a burst of irritation, he snatched away her bun and pulled her up from the steps with a rather fierce tone, "Are you stupid, Mu Chenxi?"
