The Scheming Ex-Husband's Courtship-Chapter 537 - 473 So Obedient

Chapter 537

Chapter 537: Chapter 473 So Obedient
Mu Chenxi was so frightened by Luo Shangqing that tears almost sprang out. Biting her softly tinted lips, she stretched out a hand to clutch at Luo Shangqing’s lapel, like a drowning person grabbing onto a piece of driftwood, entrusting all her hopes onto him.
"Professor Luo, Kong Tai is lost." Her voice wasn’t as cheery as usual, conveying an indescribable sense of loss.
"What?" Luo Shangqing didn’t hear clearly, wondering what in the world Kong Tai was.
"My cat, its name is Kong Tai, it’s lost." Mu Chenxi thought of Kong Tai and grief welled up inside her, "It’s my mom’s treasure, if I lose it, she’ll definitely flatten me. I’ve left my keys and wallet at home, now I’m penniless, plus, I don’t dare to pick the lock, or I’ll be in big trouble once my mom finds out."
She spoke in such a grievous tone that Luo Shangqing finally understood. It turned out that the girl had gone out to chase the cat and accidentally left her wallet and keys at home. Afraid that the cat wouldn’t find its way back, she foolishly waited here, both hungry and cold.
He sighed silently, wondering how could there be such a stubborn girl.
"Don’t panic, let’s look around. Are there any places it likes to go to?" Luo Shangqing’s tone softened.
Mu Chenxi shook her head, "Kong Tai is a homebody, hardly ever going out, but recently, it seems to have grown tired of staying at home. At night, it keeps standing on the windowsill meowing nonstop until it settles down after a scolding."
"Come on, get in the car," Luo Shangqing said, looking down at the hand grasping the corner of his garment. At this moment, how could he possibly shake off this hand that was seeking his help.
Mu Chenxi followed Luo Shangqing into his car, proactively pulling the seat belt across and fastening it.
"Professor Luo, where do we start looking?"
Luo Shangqing started the car and drove out of the neighborhood: "Is there a small wooded area or something nearby your place?"
"A wooded area?" Mu Chenxi tilted her head and thought carefully, "Behind the complex, there’s a park. It’s not big, but there is a small wooded area there."
"Let’s go there and see." Luo Shangqing casually turned on the car’s heater and handed over the sports water bottle he usually drank from.
Mu Chenxi knew that Luo Shangqing was a clean freak, who almost never used things offered by others, and he always carried his frequently used items with him, like this water bottle, for example. With a silver-gray hardened exterior, it looked quite plain, but felt substantial in hand. The logo of a well-known brand on the body suggested it might be a limited-edition product. Chenxi had noticed him using this water bottle two years ago, and now its paint was slightly worn.
"No need, I’m not thirsty," Mu Chenxi said, quite self-aware, and promptly waved her hands.
Luo Shangqing’s hand showed no intention of retracting, instead, he urged, "Take it, I’m driving."
Mu Chenxi, not wanting to distract him, reluctantly took it with both hands, but she didn’t unscrew the cap. Instead, she held it in her arms, the bottle probably containing hot water, as it was still warm to the touch. Just holding it like this, she felt an odd sense of warmth.
Luo Shangqing drove to the small park as Mu Chenxi had described. It was more of a fitness area atop a small hill than a park, with some workout equipment and a boardwalk built around the hillside where several people hurried past as they exercised.
"This is the only wooded area around here." Mu Chenxi pointed outside, "Sometimes when I’ve eaten too much, I’d come here for a walk with my mom."
Luo Shangqing glanced at her, not so much interested in the woods as he was teasing, "Do you often overeat?"
Mu Chenxi realized she had said something she shouldn’t have and promptly zipped her mouth shut. This Professor Luo always picked at words; he must be a Virgo.
The two left the car and headed up the hill, with Luo Shangqing walking ahead while Mu Chenxi followed five or six steps behind.
When Luo Shangqing reached halfway up the hill, he suddenly stopped and turned to look at the girl who had a somewhat sneaky expression: "Why are you staying so far away from me?"
Mu Chenxi also stopped, shrinking her neck guiltily: "I often run into neighbors here..."
She didn’t finish her sentence, but Luo Shangqing already understood what she meant. She was afraid of being seen by neighbors and causing misunderstandings.
Luo Shangqing felt inexplicably annoyed. Was it so shameful to be seen with him that she had to sneak around like a thief?
"I am your teacher," Luo Shangqing criticized her righteously, "Don’t always have such dirty thoughts."
Mu Chenxi was left without a comeback by his words, as if she really harbored some illicit thoughts. Left with no choice, she quickly sped up to catch up with him.
Luo Shangqing was pleased with her obedient response and his lips curved upwards, "Let’s go."
The two then searched all the way to the small woods behind the hill, where several trash bins were lined up by the roadside. Not yet cleared, they gave off a sour, rotten smell as they approached. Nearby the trash bins, some bags filled with garbage had fallen to the ground, spilling their contents everywhere.
Luo Shangqing walked over, looked around, then crouched to study the garbage before striding into the woods.
Mu Chenxi didn’t understand what he wanted to do. She wanted to say that Kong Tai, like him, had a thing for cleanliness and would never go to such filthy places. However, since she had asked for his help, she should at least trust him enough. Mu Chenxi opened her mouth but ultimately said nothing.
As soon as she entered the grove, Mu Chenxi heard the meowing and her ears perked up immediately.
Luo Shangqing still walked on, striding forward without pausing, until he reached the depths of the woods, where he cautiously peeked ahead from behind a tree.
Mu Chenxi hurried over, and Luo Shangqing quickly turned and motioned for her to be quiet with a gesture; she immediately slowed her steps and looked into the grove in silence just like him.
On a patch of open ground, six or seven cats were frolicking, and she recognized Kong Tai at a glance – its black and white fur was particularly distinctive.
Kong Tai was tussling with a dark yellow long-haired cat, completely oblivious to the audience that had gathered.
"Do you see your cat?" Luo Shangqing asked in a low voice.
"Yes." Joy was swimming in Mu Chenxi’s eyes, barely concealable; she had found Kong Tai after searching for an entire day, and she could hardly contain her urge to dance with delight.
Though Mu Chenxi was usually stern with Kong Tai, her feelings for the cat were no less than Luo Meijuan’s; otherwise, she wouldn’t have gone without food or drink just to find it.
"That one with black and white fur is it."
"Can you call it over?" Luo Shangqing asked.
"I’ll try." Mu Chenxi tiptoed out from behind the tree, and the frolicking kittens immediately spotted her, suddenly scattering in a tense flight.
"Kong Tai," Mu Chenxi called out in a rush, and Kong Tai, in the midst of fleeing with the other cats, paused upon hearing the familiar voice. It turned its head, saw Mu Chenxi, and let out a meow.
Tears almost brimmed in Mu Chenxi’s eyes as she opened her arms and said, "Kong Tai, come here. Let’s go home with sister."
Kong Tai didn’t immediately run over but hesitated, looking at its just-escaped friends, wrestling with its conscience for a long while before finally stepping elegantly towards Mu Chenxi.
Just as Mu Chenxi was about to crouch down to embrace it, she suddenly heard Luo Shangqing urgently shout from behind: "Be careful."
Before Mu Chenxi could react, a dark shadow suddenly burst from the bushes, and a piercing pain shot through the back of her hand. Kong Tai in front of her also seemed to be provoked, crying out fiercely at the shadow.
Luo Shangqing quickly came over, first checking her hand, then picking up a stone from the ground and throwing it towards where the shadow disappeared, eliciting a pitiful meow, followed by the sound of something swiftly fleeing.
Three gashes were torn in Mu Chenxi’s hand, bleeding profusely, while Kong Tai anxiously circled around her.
"It’s okay," Mu Chenxi reassured Kong Tai, "as long as you’re home, that’s all that matters."
Luo Shangqing took out a dark blue striped handkerchief from his pocket, covered her wound with it, and frowned as he said, "The cats here are feral and wild. That one just now must have thought you were going to hurt Kong Tai and that’s why it suddenly pounced. It must be Kong Tai’s boyfriend that it’s recently made here, I guess?"
Kong Tai, not understanding their words, just kept meowing.
"This little injury doesn’t matter," Mu Chenxi smiled at Luo Shangqing nonchalantly, "Professor Luo, your handkerchief is all dirty now."
"Aren’t you a medical student? You should know better, wounds inflicted by feral cats need immediate rabies vaccinations; otherwise, they can lead to serious problems," Luo Shangqing said as he lifted her up from the ground, "Take your cat, we’re going to the hospital."
Mu Chenxi was scolded once again, but she accepted it willingly. Indeed, this was basic knowledge that a medical student should possess, or to put it another way, even the neighboring Aunt Zhang and Uncle Li knew to get vaccinated when bitten by cats or dogs.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Mu Chenxi didn’t register but was directly taken by Luo Shangqing to his office.
"Sit here and don’t move; I’ll be right back," Luo Shangqing instructed before leaving.
Mu Chenxi sat obediently in the chair holding Kong Tai, taking the opportunity to look around Luo Shangqing’s office, which was as neatly organized and spotless as his office at the school.
Mu Chenxi’s gaze shifted to a coat rack beside her, where his white lab coat hung. Even the hanger seemed particularly tall and handsome in her eyes because of his coat.
When Luo Shangqing returned, he held a box of syringes in his hand, and he heard the landline on the desk ringing incessantly.
"Mu Chenxi, can’t you answer the phone?" Luo Shangqing frowned discontentedly.
Mu Chenxi looked at him with an aggrieved expression: "You told me not to move..."
Luo Shangqing: "..."
Since when did this girl start obeying his words so diligently?
