Chapter 575: Chapter 504 Date
Mu Chenxi hurriedly climbed into bed, pulled the curtains closed like a thief, and dove under the covers, holding her phone in the dark.
There was a missed call on the phone, probably because it rang for a long time and no one answered, "I have something to do, I’ll head back first."
Just a few simple words, emotions.
A minute really flies by in the blink of an eye, but staring at the phone with the numbers constantly jumping
Even though no one saw her, Mu Chenxi’s heart still raced, and after some consideration, she replied: "I just went to wash my hair, drive carefully."
After typing these words she felt they might be too old-fashioned, so she added a string of cute emoticons, yet those seconds seemed incredibly long. When Mu Chenxi counted to the fifth 60 seconds, Luo Shangqing’s message finally arrived: "What are you doing this weekend?"
"Nothing much, watching movies at home, what about you?"
"I’m also free, how about we watch together?"
The corners of Mu Chenxi’s mouth lifted high upwards. Was he asking her to watch a movie together? But her hands were typing, "There doesn’t seem to be any good movies lately."
After waiting a bit, the reply came: "Mu Chenxi, are you a pig?"
Mu Chenxi felt incredibly foolish; who talks like that on a first date, saying such discouraging words, watching movies and whatnot is secondary, after all.
Before long, she received a photo of a crowded road, "Stuck in traffic."
"The traffic in Aus City really needs to be improved, it’s only this time and it’s already jam-packed," Mu Chenxi complained: "Just focus on driving, don’t text."
"There might have been an accident upfront, have to wait a bit longer." Luo Shangqing turned on the car’s sound system, which was looping the song "Like Love". He never got tired of it, for every time the intro played, he would visualize the girl holding the microphone, sitting under the dim lights and singing softly.
Although that girl is as swift as a rabbit, she also has her moments of serenity like a maiden.
Mu Chenxi and Luo Shangqing chatted sporadically, mostly about trivial school matters, consciously avoiding any mention of migration issues.
"I’m driving now, the traffic ahead has cleared up."
"Mm, be careful." Mu Chenxi reminded him again then hesitated before adding a kiss emoji, sending the message with a mix of nervousness and shyness. Luo Shangqing’s reply did not come back right away.
Mu Chenxi wasn’t disappointed; in fact, she had grown accustomed to her way of chatting with Luo Shangqing, where practically every message from her included a couple of emojis. Her phone was filled with several folders of quirky emoticons, whereas Luo Shangqing’s messages were often straightforward and clear without excessive punctuation or exaggeration. Even though "Goodbye" could be expressed with an emoji, he would always type out the words meticulously.
There was an age difference of a dozen years between them, and it was impossible not to have a generation gap, but this gap didn’t impact the enthusiasm of their chat. Liking someone meant adapting to them, not expecting them to change everything for you. Just like how she liked his way of chatting—direct and to the point, without dragging on, possessing the steadiness and grace expected of a mature man.
"Chenxi, for you." Quan Jin pulled back the curtain and tossed in a piece of chocolate.
Mu Chenxi was hugging her phone, reviewing their chat history for the third time, practically memorizing it, when Quan Jin startled her. She hastily shoved the phone under her pillow with some guilt: "Hey hey, you didn’t knock on the curtain."
"Pfft, it’s just texting with Professor Luo, not like you’re watching porn." Quan Jin’s mouth was never polite, "Sister has been in love plenty and unlike you, who acts like you’ve never seen the sky before, if you’ve got any difficult issues, spill them and I’ll solve them for you."
"You’ve become an expert from experience, huh? After so many relationships, you still haven’t ended up with anyone." Mu Chenxi curled her lip, tearing open the chocolate wrapper, "Is this from another suitor? I’m telling you, hurry up and settle down, freeing all those who keep thinking about you. They’re really spent, this chocolate isn’t cheap."
"Even if you ate it, you couldn’t satisfy your taste." Quan Jin viciously pulled the curtain shut, "Go talk about your love, say your sweet nothings."

In the following two days, Mu Chenxi felt as if time was crawling by. Usually, the weekend would come in the blink of an eye, but now each day seemed infinitely prolonged. By Friday noon, she had no intention of studying anymore, packing her bag early and deliberately choosing a seat by the back door, only waiting to rush out the moment the bell for end of class rang.
But the more she was in a hurry, the more the teacher on stage took his time, repeating the same content over and over again.
"Mu Chenxi, come and answer this question." The teacher pushed up his glasses and looked in her direction.
Mu Chenxi immediately put down her backpack, retracted her pose ready to bolt through the back door, and stood up reluctantly.
In truth, she hadn’t been listening to what the teacher was saying at all, nor did she know what he asked. She vaguely heard something about a percentage, but with so many eyes on her, she had no choice but to blurt out an answer: "Fifty percent."
Xinyu next to her was the first to burst out laughing, followed by the entire class roaring with laughter, and even the teacher rolled his eyes in exasperation: "I asked you how much water loss from the body would be life-threatening, and you tell me fifty percent? That’s not life-threatening, that’s already a mummy."
She laughed again.
"Mu Chenxi, although you have published a paper in SCI, that doesn’t mean you will graduate smoothly. You are only in your second year now, and there are still several years of study ahead of you. Don’t get cocky over a little success..." The teacher lectured earnestly for a while before adding, "The correct answer is between fifteen to twenty percent, remember that."
Mu Chenxi blushed and nodded hurriedly, and the teacher let her sit down.
"Usually you’re not this anxious, what’s the rush? Reincarnation?" Xinyu teased with a pursed lip, "You’ve been distracted the entire class."
Mu Chenxi giggled twice: "It’s nothing, really nothing."
The school bell rang for the end of class, and the teacher held them up for another five minutes. Mu Chenxi said goodbye to Xinyu and dashed off in a flash.
When she talked to Luo Shangqing about this that evening, he was queuing to buy her popcorn. Amid the lengthy line, he was still the most striking one, occasionally attracting some covetous glances.
"It’s really just too embarrassing. I knew the correct answer, but I didn’t hear clearly what the teacher asked," said Mu Chenxi, biting her straw, looking wronged.
Luo Shangqing looked at her amusedly: "Didn’t that Li Xiaoming remind you?"
"What Li Xiaoming?" Mu Chenxi looked at him with a puzzled face and, after catching a hint of a mocking smile from him, suddenly realized that he remembered the incident where she and Li Xiaoming had shared a seat, and it was then that Li Xiaoming had reminded her when she failed to answer.
Mu Chenxi felt that the incident that day might very well have been deliberate on his part.
Mentally she criticized him as a petty man who holds grudges, but she said out loud: "I’m not in the same class as Li Xiaoming."
"Even though not in the same class, there are still some subjects you have to attend together," Luo Shangqing continued sarcastically.
Mu Chenxi glared at him: "Professor Luo, it’s your turn, I want a large bucket."
The server, dealing with so many customers every day, was obviously impatient. After dismissing the lady in front of her, she suddenly felt a breath of fresh air and saw Luo Shangqing standing before her. His exquisite eyes were lowered, looking at the popcorn in the glass case, and he pointed, saying, "A portion of popcorn, the large bucket."
Having said that, he also glanced at Mu Chenxi, wondering how her thin and small frame could hold so much popcorn.
"Sure, just a moment please," the server said while filling up the bucket with popcorn, her eyes still on Luo Shangqing, inadvertently overfilling it.
Walking away from the queue, Mu Chenxi, holding a brimming large bucket of popcorn, was so delighted her dimples trembled wildly: "It must be because the server thought I was too cute, that’s why she filled it up so much."
Luo Shangqing snorted lightly, flicked her smooth forehead and said, "Let’s see you finish it."
After throwing a few pieces of popcorn into her mouth, Mu Chenxi handed her drink to Luo Shangqing along with it: "Wait for me, I’m going to exchange the movie tickets."
Luo Shangqing was originally going to buy the tickets, but Mu Chenxi told him she had already booked them online.
Mu Chenxi was collecting the tickets from an automatic machine, and Luo Shangqing watched from the side until the ticket outlet produced two movie tickets, at which point he showed a slightly surprised expression.
To be honest, it’s been five or six years since he last stepped into a movie theater; he didn’t even realize that technology had advanced to such an extent. Most of his time was occupied by teaching, experiments, and patients; he could hardly remember the last time he had enjoyed such leisure.
"That’s all it takes?"
"Yep, that’s it," Mu Chenxi said, shaking the movie tickets in her hand, "The seats are already picked out, and the key is it’s a group purchase, half the price than buying here."
"What movie are we watching?" Since Mu Chenxi bought the tickets, Luo Shangqing didn’t know what she had chosen.
"You’ll find out once we get in there," Mu Chenxi said cunningly, winking an eye, pulled at his sleeve with one hand, and grabbed her drink with the other, "Let’s go, they’ve started checking tickets."
Luo Shangqing lowered his gaze to see the small white hand tightly grasping his sleeve, he raised the corner of his mouth and with his free hand, he held her hand, tightening his fingers to envelop the softness in his palm.
Mu Chenxi was startled at first, but then her ears began to burn though she did not struggle and let him lead her obediently.
During the ticket check, the attendant couldn’t hide a hint of envy in their gaze, probably envious that she, being so plain, managed to be in the company of Luo Shangqing, a man shimmering with radiance.
In the past, Mu Chenxi would have felt inferior, but now, she couldn’t help but puff up her chest as she entered the theater under the attendant’s watchful gaze.
